Mudcats open home series with 7-3 victory

McDowell & Harrison combined for 7 RBIs in home win

By Carolina Mudcats | July 12, 2017 3:44 PM ET

Brett Martin was the starter for Down East today and he is rated between 5 and 10 in the Rangers' list of prospects depending on whom you talk to. He retired the first 5 batters of the game. In the second inning, after falling behind to Jake Gatewood (1-3, 2B, BB) 3-0, he struck him out on 3 straight fastballs. Lucas Erceg (1-4) then also struck out and it appeared Martin might be tough to hit today. Then Isan Diaz came up, and it was mentioned by Greg Young during the at bat, he had a very good at bat which really changed the game. Diaz (1-3, 2B, BB) fouled off 8 pitches during a 14 pitch at bat. Finally, he lined a double to the gap in left center. Monte Harrison (2-4, HR, 4 RBI, SB) then followed with a single to score Diaz. Max McDowell (2-3, HR, 3 RBI, SB) then followed with his first home run of the year to make it 3-0 before Martin knew what hit him. Harrison and McDowell combined to get all 7 of the Mudcats' RBIs.

Marcos Diplan (6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 3 K) got his second quality start of the year. He has now given up 10 home runs this year compared to 7 all of last year. Luke (not Len, wrong century) Barker (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) looked very good in relief. The only hit he gave up was a seeing eye grounder between Gatewood and Diaz. Nate Griep worked the 9th yielding a walk and a hit batsman before retiring the side.

Monte Harrison now has a 6 game hitting streak with a bunch of games missed in the middle. Trent Clark was 0-4 today but had an OBP of .530 in the second half going into today so let's give him a mulligan on that. Trent Clark is developing quite a split in L vs R. He has BA of .190 vs .269, OBP of .352 vs .405 and SLG of .290 vs .463 on the season. Isan Diaz is slightly better against lefties and Lucas Erceg is about the same. Wood Duck starter Martin is a lefty.

Biloxi Shuckers Box Score

Quick Summary:

Strikeout machine Freddy Peralta kept racking up the strikeouts adding 5 more to his season total after going 5.2 innings of one run baseball for the Shuckers. Peralta has kept it going after his promotion to AA to the tune of a 3.10 ERA. Dustin Houle had a big offensive day for the Shuckers hitting a go ahead homerun in the 8th inning, but the pitching could hold on. Jorge Lopez blew the lead right away and Nick Ramirez gave up the deciding homerun in the 10th inning to hand the Shuckers a 3-2 loss.

Pitching Summary:

On the mound, Freddy Peralta (5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 10 K) started the game while Quintin Torres-Costa (1.1 IP, H, BB, K), Jorge Lopez (2.0 IP, 3 H, ER, BB, 2 K), and Nick Ramirez (0.0 IP, H, ER, HR) provided the relief.

Final: DSL Cubs1 10, DSL Indians/Brewers 5

The Brewers full DSL squad had their game suspended by rain in the fifth inning and their co-op team may have wished they did as well, as the Cubs scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to come from behind and defeat the Indians/Brewers 10-5.

DSL Indians/Brewers Box Score

Unfortunately it was Brewers pitching that coughed up the lead late. Melvin Mendez went an inning plus, giving up two runs and newly signed Jorge Mancebo got touched up for five runs (though only one was earned) in an inning of work. Mancebo, the former Rangers farmhand who was signed by the Brewers on Friday, gave up three hits and walked three and was charged with the loss. Rafael Brito had a three-hit game for the Brewers, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Luis Avila continued his hot-hitting ways, going 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. The 18-year-old Venezuelan has 15 hits in 39 at-bats during that span, including five multi-hit games. Yorki Franco singled, doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

DSL Indians/Brewers Game Log

The Brewers plated four runs in the third inning to take a lead, which they held until the eighth inning implosion.

DSL Indians/Brewers Top of the 3rd

Jesus Maestre walks.

Luis Avila singles on a ground ball to first baseman Luis Hidalgo. Jesus Maestre to 3rd.

Combination of my work in the Transaction Thread this AM and then some technical difficulties, but I'm going to be delayed on the Wisconsin (nicely done, Rattlers) and Helena (again, it went well) games, as well as a full Garrett Cooper update.

If any of our trusted Link Reporters have an unplanned moment to pitch in this AM, thanks; if not, understood and I'll chime in later. Kind of like when a news broadcast has to improvise live ;). "And That" is still slated to break down Maryvale later this AM.

In the meantime, enjoy these additional clips for now:

AZL Brewers 9, AZL Angels 3

AZL Brewers Boxscore

The Brewers' magical run continues as the team moves to a league-best 12-3 record. They have a magic number of 11 for the first half Central division crown, if you're wondering.

Tristen Lutz did not hit any more home runs, but he did go 3-4 with a triple and a walk. He has yet to strike out through 11 pro PAs. Keston Hiura saw his hitting streak end at 10 - he went 0-2 with 3 walks. Je'Von Ward notched his first two pro hits, both singles, and he had a walk in three official at-bats.

Robert Henry, Hiura UC-Irvine teammate Alex Guenette, and Julio Mendez all also had two hits. Guennette and Mendez both launched a double.

Joaquin De La Cruz was once again pretty great, allowing one run in five innings of work. In my humble opinion, he should be in Helena.
