Guerra to the DL, retro to Jul 8

RHP Junior Guerra (right shin contusion) has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to July 8. Corresponding move TBD.

Citing the shin from last time out, nothing related to arm/velocity loss. Also has him lined up to come off and make the 5th start after the break on the 18th, so may not yet tip us off on anything related to the rotation longer-term.

I don't think we will need anyone for the rotation.

They would have to replace Guerras spot which may just be with blazek

The original post states he would be in line to make the 5th start after the break ... so unless he is going to need additional time on the DL we won't need a starter. Guerra just becomes #5 out of the break...

Yeah there is a chance this is nothing more than a strategic move. Lopez, Brinson or Phillips back up for a few days after the break.

I agree. I don't think there's any move that happens with the pitching staff. There's no reason to.

I could see a position player coming up, initially..especially if Braun's calf is still a lingering issue...and then if the bullpen which is rested now has a game where they have to eat innings in the first 2 or 3 games, they bring up a bullpen arm for a couple of days and send the bat back down.

Technically they never have to make a corresponding move but im sure they will wait till friday, see how braun feels before they make a decision.

I have no idea if this has been part of the thinking for Milwaukee with the plethora of short stinted call ups already this year (multiple pitchers, Brinson, Phillips, etc) … but I’d be shocked if we don’t exercise the option to bring up another guy for the few days that Guerra is out, simply to allow another guy to shed the jitters of getting to the big leagues. Cooper fits this description, DeJesus Jr. slightly, Wang slightly, Burnes, etc.

Bring the guys up for a few games and give yourself the chance to get them some game experience in a low leverage spot so they can get rid of the over excitement that comes from ‘making it’. That way when they are up in September to help us seal the division, they are here to play and won’t be as likely to be overwhelmed with the environment.

Am I the only one extremely worried about Guerra's health and effectiveness as a SP the Brewers can count on going forward this season?

I don't think you are wrong to be concerned. Guerra's limited history, coupled with the injuries, just make him more than a bit of a wild card.

Barring a trade, I'm guessing the club sticks with him until Anderson is back. Because if Guerra can right the ship - he can be really good.

However, if Guerra continues to pitching poorly (and he has looked pretty bad lately), and Anderson gets back, I wouldn't be shocked if he was replaced in the rotation by Suter or Woodruff (assuming he gets back to health).

Right now:

Nelson, Davies, Garza, Guerra, Suter

When Anderson gets back, you go with your top five. If Guerra gets squeezed out at that time, then so be it.

I was concerned about him to start the year, add in the injury and yeah I'm very worried.

You have to give him a few more games and see if he can turn it around though considering what he did last year. If the velocity stays down and the control is off it should be a quick hook though.

I think it's only reasonable to be worried, not just because of the time he's missed, but because he throws a pitch that's extremely hard on his forearm/elbow in his splitter.

guerra to be activated today. will the club stick with five extra position players? i'm sensing yes--especially if stephen vogt is held back for precautionary reasons.

if vogt goes on the dl and a catcher is recalled, i could see the brewers optioning brett phillips or yadiel rivera for guerra's spot.

One would think Vogt is at least going to hit the concussion list so Bandy will be back up. And the BP is consistently overworked so I can't see them thinning it anymore. So I'd think Rivera goes down for Guerra, heck I forgot he was on the roster until the post above. I guess we'll know soon enough. Then I'd think Phillips goes down when Sogard is back in a few days.
