Trey Supak really did have a Jorge Ortega-like game today. Less than 80 pitches to get through 7 innings. Completed 8 innings in the end, retiring 18 in a row at one point. He only had 3 K's though.

Supak tosses two-hit shutout in 8-0 Carolina victory

The Mudcats snapped a five game losing streak with Sunday's victory

By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | July 9, 2017 8:05 PM ET

This game had something for everyone. A combined two hit shutout, everybody in the lineup with at least one hit, a home run, two triples, two doubles, 4 stolen bases and a partridge in a pear tree. Trey Supak (8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K) threw 93 pitches in the 8 innings, 58 for strikes. This is the first game for Carolina I've seen in which he had command of his fastball from the start. Wuilder Rodriguez worked a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off.

Trent Clark (1-4, 3B, 2 BB, SB) looked much better in centerfield today. Yesterday I was wondering if he could continue there as he was having a lot of problems but he was quite good on his reads today. Troy Stokes Jr. (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, SB) had another excellent day. Jake Gatewood had a double and an RBI in 5 trips to the plate. Isan Diaz was 1-3 with 2 walks. Cooper Hummel was 1-2 with 3 walks. Jose Cuas had a long triple and Brandon Diaz a double.

Carolina Box Score

Carolina Game Log

Carolina Top of the 3rd

Trent Clark strikes out swinging.

Troy Stokes Jr. walks.

Lucas Erceg singles on a line drive to left fielder Jameson Fisher. Troy Stokes Jr. to 2nd.

Jake Gatewood doubles (29) on a line drive to left fielder Jameson Fisher. Troy Stokes Jr. scores. Lucas Erceg scores. Fielding error by left fielder Jameson Fisher.

Isan Diaz grounds out, third baseman Brady Conlan to first baseman Telvin Nash.

Luis Aviles pops out to first baseman Telvin Nash in foul territory.

Here's a good inning for some of the more fringy players:

Carolina Top of the 9th

Pitching Change: Victor Diaz replaces Mike Morrison.

Cooper Hummel walks.

Jose Cuas triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Luis Alexander Basabe. Cooper Hummel scores.

Brandon Diaz doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Jameson Fisher. Jose Cuas scores.

Trent Clark grounds out softly to first baseman Telvin Nash. Brandon Diaz to 3rd.

Troy Stokes Jr. grounds out, shortstop Danny Mendick to first baseman Telvin Nash. Brandon Diaz scores.

Pitching Change: Ryan Riga replaces Victor Diaz.

Lucas Erceg grounds out, shortstop Danny Mendick to first baseman Telvin Nash.

Make that 7 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K.

Interesting to note that Jacksonville's starter was an undrafted free agent out of Drury(?) University last year, and is already in AA. He's put up very good numbers in his year of pro ball, good enough to be in AA a year after signing. Heckuva sign by the Marlins.

I know I mentioned him just a few days ago, but Stokes has really added power this year, he's up to 13 HRs way more then the rest of his minors time put together. Still only 21 and deserves credit for a very good season so far possible excellent depending on how extreme of a pitchers park he's playing in.

Have the Brewers ever drafted a pitcher who started his minor league career more impressively then Burnes?

Unless I'm forgetting someone, I think before Burnes it had been about seven years since a pitcher made more than a cameo appearance in AA the year after getting drafted. Somehow, of the two who did it in 2010, I remembered the obscure one and missed the more obvious one.

Burlington Breaks Tie in Eighth to Beat Wisconsin

Bees top Rattlers 7-4 on Sunday

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

The Burlington Bees continue to have the Rattlers number as now more than 1/4 of their wins this season have come at Wisconsin's expense. Even after a tough late innings loss it is worth checking out Chris Mehring's game story which is insightful as always.

AUDIO via the Rattler Radio Soundcloud: "Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner discuss the Rattlers' 7-4 loss and have audio from Carlos Belonis, Carlos Herrera, Drake Owenby, & Matt Erickson.

Wisconsin Box Score

Offensively Carlos Belonis led the way for the Timber Rattlers recording three hits including a double. As noted in the game story Joantgel Segovia extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Rattlers did finish a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts...

BASERUNNING

SB: Belonis (2, 2nd base off Bertness/Leon); Feliciano, M (7, 2nd base off Bertness/Leon); Aguilar (2, 2nd base off Bertness/Leon); Segovia (7, 2nd base off Barkell/Leon).

Wisconsin Game Log

RHP Carlos Herrera came on to pitch in the 4th inning and lasted 4.0 innings. It was the 19-year old Herrera's first ever outing in A ball and it started with a clean 1-2-3 inning including a strikeout. For the outing he gave up three earned runs overall including solo home runs in the 5th and 6th innings.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Barry Cort was a 4th round pick out of high school in 1974 who won 14 games in AA at age 20. He won 36 games in the minors before turning 21. Sadly he blew out his arm about a month after a promising start to his Brewer career at age 21 in 1977 and never made it back. Had he stayed healthy, no telling what kind of career he would have had. He might have put the Brewers over the top in both 78 and 79 too.

Kudos to you for remembering Andre Lamontagne.

Reading the box scores makes me feel like I took a trip in the way-back machine. Brewers affiliates tonight have faced Adam Loewen, Clayton Mortensen, and Daniel Schlereth.

Schlereth is 31 years old. Seems like just yesterday he was rushed to the majors.

Burnes tosses seven scoreless innings in Shuckers extra-inning loss

Jacksonville wins on a walk-off wild pitch in the 11th inning on Sunday

By Biloxi Shuckers

DSC_8925_0auyju4l_xqildbdd.jpg

Corbin Burnes lowered his season ERA to 1.06 after Sunday's start in Jacksonville (Mark P Driscoll)

Biloxi Shuckers Box Score

Quick Summary:

Corbin Burnes was on the mound for the Shuckers and like he seems to do every time he absolutely dominated opposing hitters for seven scoreless innings. Burnes dropped his season ERA to an MiLB best 1.06. The other pitcher doing unbelievable things in Biloxi, Nick Ramirez, also had quite the day. Ramirez threw three perfect innings racking up three strikeouts along the way. Ramirez, who is in his first year as a professional pitcher, has 1.26 ERA for the Shuckers. Despite nine innings of domination from the Burnes/Ramirez duo the Shuckers offense failed to score in the eleven inning game. Shuckers lost 0-1 after Javier Salas let a run score on a wild pitch in the eleventh inning run.

Pitching Summary:

On the mound, Corbin Burnes (5.0 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 6 K) started the game while Nick Ramirez (3.0 IP, 3K) and Javier Salas (0.2 IP, H, ER, BB) provided the relief.

Hitting Summary:

Wendell Rijo (2-4)

Corbin Burnes (1-2)

Dustin Houle (1-4)

Biloxi Shuckers Game Log

Salas throws away the game.

Jacksonville Bottom of the 11th

Pitching Change: Javier Salas replaces Nick Ramirez, batting 9th.

Chris Diaz doubles (6) on a fly ball to right fielder Michael Choice.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Rehiner Cordova replaces Severino Gonzalez.

Javier Salas intentionally walks Rehiner Cordova.

Kyle Barrett ground bunts into a force out, first baseman Dustin DeMuth to third baseman Gabriel Noriega. Chris Diaz out at 3rd. Rehiner Cordova to 2nd. Kyle Barrett to 1st.

Austin Dean grounds into a force out, second baseman Wendell Rijo to shortstop Angel Ortega. Rehiner Cordova to 3rd. Kyle Barrett out at 2nd. Austin Dean to 1st.

With John Norwood batting, wild pitch by Javier Salas, Rehiner Cordova scores.

Fine write-up above despite the blowout, and to follow-up the Helena Independent Record game story includes several quotes from Manager Nestor Corredor.

Helena Box Score

30th round LHP Cody Beckman (NC State) now has four scoreless appearances spanning five innings in his pro career. As noted via the links, this was his Helena debut. Southpaws always welcome.

Sox Fall, 8-4, In Central Texas

Colorado Springs enter break six games ahead of Oklahoma City in division

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Follow the link for the relatively brief summary, learn who is on a bit of a HR streak, and yes, it's now All-Star Break time for the AAA club. Yes, Garrett Cooper had two more hits, including a double. Keep increasing that trade chip value (thanks, Jesus Aguilar for the RH-hitting first base blockage making Cooper available).

Colorado Springs Box Score

LHP Wei-Chung Wang continues to shine in his short-burst role; RHP's Hiram Burgos and Tom Wilhelmsen each struggle again.
