1 All Star

Maybe it's more common than I'm thinking, but when was the last time a 1st place team only had 1 All Star?

With the Brewers this year, I understand that Shaw had furious competition at 3B which is why he didn't make it. This line up is not spectacular, but it's solid top to bottom which is why they are doing well. But in the grand scheme of things, it is a bit surprising that a 1st place doesn't get more than one and still does as well as they are doing.

It's lack of respect for the Brewers as I see it. The Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox have more because they are big market teams and that means more people voting for their team.

I think Travis, Eric, and Orlando could have joined Corey in Miami as reserves.

I add Orlando because he came on strong lately but in the beginning of the voting he wouldn't have made it. Right now he would belong.

The Brewers having one all star isn't a big deal. It shows you the club has been built with breadth and depth in mind. While I'd love to have a Trout anchoring the lineup, that's just not how we have been constructed.

We have eight hitters projecting to to produce 2.0+ WAR or better. No, we don't have any guys who will likely produce a 5.0 or 6.0 WAR or better - but that's okay. We've got all around solid production. It isn't sexy, and outside of Shaw, probably none of the hitters is all star worthy.

I've said before that I like how the team has been built. It's built to withstand loses. When someone gets hurt, you have others guys step up and production doesn't suffer that dramatically. We've also taken chances on several players - and it's paid off. Again, not all the moves work out, but the point is you bring in the next man when they don't - and see how it goes.

Until it isn't a stupid fan vote I wouldn't get too worked up over it. With the majority of fans being stupid and the markets no where near compatible in size, stuff like this happens.

I don't even want Knebel to pitch in that game. Just rest buddy. We have a big second half to go after.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

The voting literally has nothing to do with the amount of players we have go. Unless you really feel someone who was voted to start shouldn't even be an All Star.

Didn't they change it so fan voting isn't weighted that heavily in the overall voting, or was that another league? Either way I really don't care about the Brewers being "disrespected" for some stupid, pointless game.

Maybe they have changed it. I couldn't even list the teams. I don't think I've watched it in years. Just list the teams and give these guys three days off.

Maybe I'm weird but if you're not a Brewer, I could give a rats behind if I ever watch you play.

Thanks for the input. I was just curious. I guess it's more common than I thought.

With that said, I don't know if anyone else besides Shaw deserved to go. But it's just a solid line up from top to bottom. I'll take having a first place team with a bunch of solid starters rather than 3+ All Stars and a 4th place team any day.

I live in southwest FL and we get all the Marlins and Rays games so I there are a few guys from those teams I root for - when they aren't playing the Crew. I'll be cheering for Stanton tonight in the HR Derby.

The Cubs only have one All-Star as well.

Of course last year almost all of their starting lineup was in this exhibition game.

The only others who could have been considered IMO are Thames and perhaps Nelson.

Is it just me or has ESPN been hyping this HR derby for the better part of the last month? Seemingly ever since their staff purge a few months ago, their baseball coverage (actual baseball coverage, not video of the monthly Tebow HR or a Sports Science snippet on Aaron Judge's last HR exit velocity) has been garbage.

Is it that ESPN is televising the derby and nothing else for All Star festivities?

I didn't think it was possible for their baseball coverage to get worse.

Can't really be too upset by this, just the quirks and bad luck of positions. Shaw and Thames would be the best hitters we'd have and those two positions are loaded. Nelson would be the only one arguable and since he started yesterday, he's basically ineligible. Nothing to get worked up about imo.

I think given the situation ESPN is in I'd do exactly what they are doing. They're stretched too thin and Sunday/Monday/Wednesday Night Baseball is not exciting to people anymore. Everyone can watch their home team, stream if they are out-of-market, and MLB Network nudged ESPN out of any other sort of hardcore fan niche.

It's crappy coverage but they have no choice on the financial end of things and most of it (beyond maybe not having foresight signing the deal) is now out of their control.

They're riding it out until they can re-up a massive MLB rights deal (probably not) or just basically let it slide off.

MLB network covers baseball so well there's no reason to go to ESPN. If MLB would just get rid of Harold during the nightly stuff they'd be about perfect. I don't even turn ESPN on at this time of the year.

When ESPN lost NASCAR broadcasting rights their NASCAR coverage basically went to 30 seconds a week the night of whenever there was a race. MLB has a lot more to cover with games every night but it'll be interesting to see what they do if they stop doing MLB games completely. It really makes no sense for them to get into any sort of bidding war for the rights to show the Yankees, Red Sox, or Cubs every Sunday night and then random midweek games.
