Sox Drop 10-9 Marathon

Cooper becomes first Sox player with at least 80 RBI since 2013

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Garrett Cooper and Brett Phillips combined to drive in six runs, but the Round Rock Express scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with a 10-9 win in front of 9,474 at Dell Diamond Saturday night.

Read at the link above as Robby details things well here - he fails to mention specifically Wily Peralta's difficulties, but our astute commentators caught on early in this thread an you'll see the details in the box score / game log below.

Colorado Springs Box Score

RHP Bubba Derby pitched well, fanning seven and walking only one -- 5 IP, 2 ER, 81 pitches.

Seven Sky Sox reached base at least twice, with Nate Orf doing so four times, which leads nicely into our next post.

Helena Box Score

Best of three outings thus far for 21-year-old 27th round RHP Cody Martin (University of Tampa); wow, seemingly joined at the hip, it was four years ago when second baseman Franly Mallen and LF Nic Pierre were signed during the July 2nd international period, and they each debuted a summer later. Each are 20 years old now, with Mallen showing more promise. Each had two singles in this game.

On the bright side, Zack Brown with another good outing. Looks like he's over the injury he was dealing with earlier this year.

I really wonder how much value Garret Cooper has on the trade market. It's easy to assume little because he's never been a big-time prospect, he's playing in Colorado Springs, he's never put up double-digit HRs before, etc., but the reality is that none of us are scouts (well, a couple irregulars are) and none of us are GMs that evaluate players for a living. But he's putting up a damn impressive year. Yes, he has some huge home/road splits, but an .841 road OPS isn't bad at all.

Also wondering why Yadiel Rivera is on the big league club and not Ivan De Jesus. Not saying IDJ is a barn burner, but Rivera has never hit worth a lick anywhere and never will.

No, an .841 road OPS is not bad at all, but it is much more in line with his career numbers which, as you noted, is not all that impressive in the power department. I have no doubt he has a very good hit tool and knows how to get on base but his ability to get to his power tool in games is questionable. I'd like him as a bench bat if he could handle the other corners.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

AZL Brewers 7, AZL Dodgers 6

AZL Brewers Boxscore

The Brewers managed to just keep ahead of the Dodgers and pulled out a 7-6 win, thanks in large part to two Tyrone Taylor home runs. They were his 3rd and 4th home runs on his rehab assignment, and he's slashing .435/.500/1.000 down in Arizona. He seemed close to returning before, but was shut down for more than a week and kept going on his rehab in Maryvale instead of hopping back up to the Biloxi roster. Hope to see him back in a Shuckers uniform soon.

Keston Hiura hit his third pro home run, and extended his hitting streak to 10 games to open his career. Kenny Corey and Robert Henry both chipped in with two hits. Corey had a double, as did Julian Jarrard.

7th round pick Bowden Francis made his first pro start. He allowed 2 runs in 2 1/3 innings. NDFA righties Kody Rock and Cameron Hanes both made pro debuts.

AZL Brewers Game Log

Home runs:

AZL Brewers Top of the 5th

Tyrone Taylor homers (4) on a line drive to left field.

Jesus Lujano called out on strikes.

Keston Hiura homers (3) on a fly ball to right field.

Pat McInerney strikes out swinging.

Nick Egnatuk flies out to right fielder Felix Osorio.

Ivan isn't on the roster because you can't option him back. Only way Ivan gets a chance is if Sogard has a season ending injury and a full bench spot is available. Rivera can still be optioned so for short term replacements he makes sense.

Cooper's played some OF in the past.

Really, I feel his value is that he makes it easy to trade Aguilar for some bullpen help or prospects.

You deal Aguilar to Seattle for James Pazos, then bring up Cooper to take his spot and DFA/option a poorly-performing reliever.

AUDIO via the Rattler Radio Soundcloud: "Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner discuss a wild night at the ballpark for the Timber Rattlers that ended in a 10-9 loss in 12 innings to the Burlington Bees. There is audio from the clubhouse with Josh Pennington, Zack Brown, and Weston Wilson checking in with Kyle."

Do yourself a favor and listen to the first few minutes of the podcast (well, actually listen to the full show), but Chris' and Kyle's open gives you so much of what you need to know about this insane contest.

Included in Saturday night's podcast is the exciting news that 19-year-old Helena RHP Carlos Herrera (Adam Lind deal with Seattle) is going to tandem with LHP Drake Owenby on Sunday, when the Herrera transfer transaction becomes official.

Remember when Daniel Missaki was considered the best prospect of those three? Any word on him? At least two of those three Lottery tickets are looking pretty good.

Except there is nothing all to suggest he is a replacement for Aguilar.

Wonder whos going down when Peralta comes back?

I'd be shocked if he ever made it back up with us. Otherwise Scahill is the obvious answer

It's a shame. The guy has the ability to be a really good big league pitcher. He's the type of guy who could really use a change of scenery...that hard sinker, that slider...when he attacks guys, he's a guy who could be a #2/3 or a back of the BP reliever. But he's not attacking, he's nibbling(or at least he was when he was up here...I'm sure in Colorado Springs his sinker sinks even less and that slider has less bite and things are only getting worse.
