Late Wisconsin Miscue Leads to Bees Win

Rattlers fall 4-3 to Burlington at home

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

07_07_17_Article_Image_4rkidbrw_549rtw4o.jpg

It's a fine write-up as usual linked above, but another disheartening one as well. The Rattlers simply don't have the margin of error production-wise to overcome the slightest mistakes. And how many tight games have ended on double-play grounders this season? Seems every other loss ends that way -- an exaggeration, but still...

Final: Colorado Springs 4, Round Rock 0

Pitching Staff Halts Express, 4-0

Cooper's early blast and shutdown pitching fuels road win

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Brief enough on this low-scoring road game that I'll cut and paste here --

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox tied a season-high by striking out 15 batters in a 4-0 shutout over the Round Rock Express in front of 10,213 at Dell Diamond Friday night.

In his first start since going a season-long 7 1/3 innings July 2 in Omaha, Angel Ventura (4-1, 3.00) shut down the Express over 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander allowed three hits and struck out a season-high eight, doubling his previous season-high of four.

VIDEO TWEET via @BrewerProspect: Angel Ventura K Montage

Tyler Cravy, Wei-Chung Wang and David Goforth combined to strike out seven Express batters, leading the Sox to tie a season-high in strikeouts. The Sox also struck out 15 batters June 17 against Oklahoma City at Security Service Field.

The Sky Sox (55-32) jumped out to a quick lead three batters into the game. Brett Phillips drove in run No. 61 on a sacrifice fly to deep left field, scoring Mauricio Dubon. Garrett Cooper then added to the lead, crushing a two-run home run off the building in straightaway centerfield. Lewis Brinson scored on Cooper's 17th home run of 2017, completing the 3-run first inning.

VIDEO TWEET via @BrewerProspect: Garrett Cooper's HR

The visitors added another run to their total in the sixth inning. After a pair of walks knocked Round Rock starter David Ledbetter from the game, Nick Noonan lofted the second Sox sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Cooper with the bases loaded and giving Colorado Springs a 4-0 advantage.

The Sky Sox look to clinch the quick three-game series Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m. CT. RHP Bubba Derby (2-0, 2.16) takes the mound against Round Rock for the first time in his career against Express RHP James Dykstra (0-3, 9.00).

Colorado Springs Box Score

The problem with spending three seasons in the Dominican Summer League is that before the organization can blink, you become a minor league free agent at age 24. RHP Angel Ventura is quickly setting himself up for a 40-man roster spot -- no matter what, he is a Scouting / Player Development Success Story. Ideally, the Brewers will speak with Ventura immediately after the season, sign him to a minor league deal for 2018, perhaps with a big league camp invite, and thus preserve a 40-man spot. Otherwise, Ventura will be in heavy demand across baseball.

Colorado Springs Game Log

At least for Express fans, it was Duck Dynasty night.

Middle Innings Too Much Trouble For Brewers In Loss

Brewers can't find a hit after the third inning in 9-2 loss to Billings

By Garrett Greene / Helena Brewers

***

In addition to the detailed summary you just read linked above, the Helena Independent Record game story includes photos and quotes:

Mustangs hammer Brewers in series finale, 9-2

Erik C. Anderson

Includes this on our friend RHP Braulio Ortiz --

Braulio Ortiz finished the game off, and had a wild start to his outing.

While warming up, Ortiz hurled a pitch into the back stop. When he got his hand on the ball and fired to second base to close out the pre-inning warmup, his toss didn’t find a recipient, as his intended target didn’t’ see it coming. The whole scene served as a fitting, 10-second microcosm of the Brewers’ off night -- though Ortiz did bounce back to strike out three, while giving up a hit, one earned run and two walks.

Helena Box Score

RHP Michael Petersen three shaky-to-bad outings since his initial six-inning shutout stint; 24th round RHP Robbie Hitt was stellar in the best of his three outings to date.

Even from the reports we saw upon his 2015 signing, it was evident OF Jay Feliciano would have some pop in his bat. Twelve HR's thus far in 315 AB's, including rough power locations such as the DSL and Maryvale.
