It was announced today that the Carolina Mudcats will host the 2018 Carolina League All Star Game (Link).

As a side note, I am very thankful the Brewers ended up in the Carolina League as opposed to Lancaster (Cal League) as was rumored last August. I had a chance to take in a Mudcats game in Zebulon, NC a couple of weeks ago and overall it seems like a pretty good place to develop young prospects. I know the Braves left town for the Florida State League, but short of having a Spring Training facility there I would gladly take the Carolina League over the FSL.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I like Zack Brown, but just imagine if the Brewers would have drafted Shawaryn instead. 109 Ks in 81 IP, reasonable walk rate (a little high tonight).

Nice to see Taylor Williams get the pitch count back up. 1 hit and 1 walk with 6 Ks through 3.1 IP.

As also posted in our season-long Timber Rattlers feature thread:

Very good hometown feature on RHP Josh Pennington, plenty of quotes from the young man --

Resilient Pennington back on track in Brewers’ system

Brian Cunniff, ShoreNewsToday (NJ)

"Pennington’s strength – and the reason Milwaukee was so interested in trading for him – is the power on his fastball. In Monday’s start with Wisconsin, Pennington said he was consistently clocked at 95 to 98 miles per hour."

Yee-hah!

Final: DSL Tigers 9, DSL Brewers 6

A six-run second inning by the Tigers proved to be too much, as the Brewers losing streak continued with a 9-6 loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.

DSL Brewers Box Score

Freisis Adames started and took the loss for the Brewers, lasting just 1.1 innings while giving up six runs, five earned. Oscar Brito's line looks good in relief of Adames, until you see that he uncorked a pair of wild pitches and allowed all three runners he inherited to score. Pablo Abreu had a monster day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and his first career home run. Catcher Luis Avalo also homered for the Brewers while Jean Carmona, who has hit safely in 20 of the 24 games he has played this season, extended his current hitting streak to five games with a single.

DSL Brewers Game Log

Abreu's first professional home run was a three-run blast in the eighth.

DSL Brewers Top of the 8th

Mudcats held to just one hit in 4-0 loss to Salem

Mike Shawaryn and the Red Sox toss one hit shutout in Zebulon

By Carolina Mudcats | July 5, 2017 11:29 PM ET

Luis Aviles batting for the Carolina Mudcats. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats)

It took 12 batters until the Mudcats put a ball in play and 13 before they hit a fair ball. The only hit was an infield single. Cody Ponce (4 2/3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) only went 4 2/3 innings while throwing 102 pitches and was the hard luck loser. He seemed to be concentrating on keeping the ball down tonight and that helped get a 7/1 ground out to fly out statistic. You have to credit the Red Sox for fouling off a lot of pitches to get the pitch count up. An Isan Diaz error led to the two runs which came in when Eric Hanhold (2 1/3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K) gave up a two run single after relieving Ponce. Scott Grist gave up a run in two innings to finish the game.

Luis Aviles (1-4, 3 K) had the only hit, which was hard hit. Troy Stokes Jr (0-1, 3 BB, SB) got on 3 times and Trent Clark (0-2, 2 BB, SB) was on twice. The best chance to score came in the 4th inning when Trent Clark walked, stole second and tried to score when Aviles had his hit. Clark was ruled out but they had a case that the catcher was blocking the plate since he was lying on home plate and Clark could not slide.

I forgot to mention that Greg Young mentioned in his broadcast that Monte Harrision does have a slight injury which is why he has been out the last 2 games. I don't know what it is but not believed to be serious.

Same left fielder victimized each time! What kind of jutting edge is out there, yikes!?

Another 18 baserunners within the Sky Sox' six trips to the plate. I will be relentless in mentioning how relentless this lineup is.

You read in the Sky Sox media notes how Garrett Cooper had tweaked his back on a swing Tuesday, and he did sit out Game One, but was back here doing Garrett Cooper things. Jett Bandy is 12-for-29 with only three K's since joining Colorado Springs. Others deserve mention here, but just do yourself a favor and enjoy the crooked numbers directly.

Nate Orf pinch-hit for Yadiel Rivera in the 3rd, perhaps part of a planned exit?

Brewers Commit Five Errors in Final Game of Road Trip

Helena finishes trip 4-3 after dropping final game 10-3 in Billings

By Garrett Greene / Helena Brewers

***

OK, you've reviewed the summary, but let's first take note that we've received reports that 18-year-old SS Antonio Pinero's defense has been at times jaw-dropping this summer, so let's chalk this up to just a very bad day, only somewhat offset by reaching twice in three plate appearances.

The headline above could easily have singled the young man out:

FIELDING

E: Pinero 5 (7, fielding, fielding, throw, fielding, throw).

From the Billings Gazette: "On two separate plays, Pinero bobbled a ground ball and had an errant throw to the second basemen, Franly Mallen, while attempting to rush a double play."

Pinero should continue to be an intriguing follow all summer.

CF Zach Clark is rocking a .978 OPS - yes, factor in Pioneer League conditions, but nice to see.
