Can HR Contest Players NOT Be On All Star Team

Not sure if I can remember the rules with this.... Thames would be an intriguing contestant, especially in South Korea.

HR Derby rosters already decided, but no you don't have to be an All Star.

Thames sure feels like a snub, especially after today though the rosters had already been decided. [sarcasm]But imagine how many drug tests he would have to do if he won the thing. I dont think there are enough cuos in the world.[/sarcasm]

Haven't checked rosters to HR rosters.... but are all HR Derby players All Stars this season? When was the last non All star in it?

Not that I have any interest in watching a derby ever but they sure loaded up on no names this year.

You have an interesting take on "no names".

If I didn't do fantasy baseball I would have no idea who Justin Bour is. Charlie Blackmon doesn't even crack the top 20 in homeruns this year. Gary Sanchez is almost certainly there because he's a Yankee and they needed that to get people to watch. It seems like most of their first and second choices said no and this is what's left.

This year has two HR Derby contestants that aren't on the All-Star rosters: Mike Moustakas and Justin Bour.

The Bour pick is pretty perplexing. They already have a hometown guy from the Marlins in Stanton, and even if they wanted to double up Miami players, they could have gone with Ozuna who's actually an All-Star and has four more homeruns than Bour. Otherwise, the following NL All-Star players also have more homeruns than Bour's 18: Votto (24), Harper (20), Zimmerman (19), Goldschmidt (19). Maybe they all declined? But even then you would think Thames would at least get a call before going with Bour.

Gary Sanchez is a pretty odd pick as well especially since they already have Judge representing the Yankees. It'd be nice to give a couple more teams' fanbases guys to root for, especially when they have more deserving players than the 2nd guys picked for these teams. Although with both Springer (25) and Gallo (21) saying they wouldn't do it, pickings are a bit slimmer in the AL. But seems like Logan Morrison (24) was game and while I think Sanchez' power is more legit than what Morrison's done, I'd take him to represent TB and award him with for his year so far over having a second Yankee in the event.

All that said, looking forward to watching Stanton defend his title in his home park against the youngsters Judge and Bellinger!

The HR derby snub (and supposed excessive testing) makes me wonder if they know something we don't.

I can't believe Thames didn't get a call for the HR Derby. So unfair.

[sarcasm]That's because he plays for the Brewers. Even tho we are in first place in the Central we are lucky MLB says there has to be at least one player from every team in this exhibition game.[/sarcasm]
