Eight Unanswered Runs Too Much For Helena

Runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th by Missoula send Brewers to second straight loss

By Garrett Greene / Helena Brewers

Yes, Jose Gomez homered again. Strength doesn't care about height. Read about that and also learn who has a 13-game on-base streak (hitting .348 on the season as well), via the link above.

Via MontanaSports.com: Jose Gomez went opposite field with a runner on in the top of the 5th, just clearing the tall wall in right for his fourth home run of the three game series. Gomez was only batting .115 through his first seven games of the season. The 5’3 outfielder from Cuba won’t want to leave Missoula, after going 6/12 with 9 RBIs and his first 4 homers of the season in Ogren Park Allegiance Field.

Helena Box Score

21st round Dixie State (UT) RHP Dylan File was the only one of four H-Crew hurlers to acquit himself well here. 2015 9th round RHP Karsen Lindell is in his third pro season out of high school, and has yet to get his WHIP below 2.00 at any point.

Total meltdown by Winston-Salem. Wow. As noted in the thread above. They were just getting started though as the Dash bobbled the game away in the 10th. Kodi Medeiros (4 2/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 6 BB, 5 K) got the start. He took 97 pitches to make it that far. Wuilder Rodriguez (3 1/3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) followed with another gem allowing the Mudcats to get back in the game. Brad Kuntz (2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) picked up the win.

Troy Stokes Jr (1-3, 2 BB) and Trent Clark (0-2, 3 BB) both got on base 3 times. Isan Diaz (2-5, 2B) and Monte Harrison (2-4) both had two hits. Lucas Erceg had a double in 5 trips to the plate.

Carolina Game Log

Here's the 10th:

Winston-Salem Top of the 10th

Carolina Mudcats Manager Joe Ayrault ejected by HP umpire Austin Jones.

Joel Booker singles on a line drive to right fielder Monte Harrison.

With Zack Collins batting, Joel Booker caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Max McDowell to shortstop Luis Aviles.

Zack Collins called out on strikes.

Telvin Nash flies out to left fielder Troy Stokes Jr.

Carolina Bottom of the 10th

Pitching Change: Kyle Kubat replaces Jack Charleston.

Lucas Erceg flies out to left fielder Landon Lassiter.

Jake Gatewood reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Johan Cruz.

Isan Diaz singles on a line drive to right fielder Joel Booker. Jake Gatewood to 2nd.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Jose Cuas replaces Monte Harrison.

Jose Cuas strikes out swinging.

Trent Clark walks. Jake Gatewood to 3rd. Isan Diaz to 2nd.

Max McDowell reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Brady Conlan. Jake Gatewood scores. Isan Diaz to 3rd. Trent Clark to 2nd.

This happened after I went to bed. Monte Harrison injured on that single in the top of the 10th? The Dash are snakebit against Carolina. The have lost every game at 5 Counties Stadium and only won 1 at home against Carolina.

Zack Brown has been pretty good as of late, looks like he's finally over the injury he had earlier this year.

I'll give credit where credit is due, since June 17th Trent Clark has raised his BA from .209 to .235, his OBP from .345 to .377, and his SLG from .316 to .370. He still has a ways to go, and the walks are great but at the next level pitchers are going to be less wild. The 27.6% K rate suggests he does a lot of looking, sometimes walking, sometimes striking out. He's going to have to be more aggressive.

Every draft there is a college pitcher or two who slips into the 4th round or later and blossoms in pro ball. The Brewers may have gotten lucky and nabbed two of them in the last four drafts.

Clark is also creating about 20% more runs than the average Carolina League hitter while being much younger than the league average player. Trent is a hell of a prospect.

I think you could say that Carolina got a little lucky tonight:

Carolina Bottom of the 9th

Troy Stokes Jr. singles on a pop up to catcher Zack Collins. Monte Harrison scores. Trent Clark scores. Corey Ray out at home, catcher Zack Collins to first baseman Telvin Nash.

Sounds like Zack Collins had an inning to forget. How the heck do you single on a pop up to catcher?? If he dropped it, it would be an error; unless it was one of those everybody call it but nobody catches it and it drops untouched.

Here's how.....https://twitter.com/brewerprospect/status/882056829748097024

And here's the walkoff, again a gift from the White Sox' High-A club:

Final: Arizona Brewers 7, Arizona Indians 6

A-Crew moves to 7-1!

VIDEO TWEET: Keston Huira swing speed

Comment from Chris: Keston Hiura explosive strong hands w/ efficient bat path, near 7 bat speed. Advanced hand eye and approach. Very quality bat

Maryvale Box Score

38th round catcher Robie Rojas has seven singles in his first 13 pro AB's for a shiny .538 average.

CF Jesus Lujano is an interesting cat we haven't discussed much -- this is his true age 18 season (19 next February), only one Dominican Summer League season under his belt, left-handed bat who walked (30) more than he fanned (28) in 203 AB's last summer. That advanced approach brought him stateside and into the Maryvale leadoff spot here.

Maryvale Game Log

RHP Scott Serigstad (2016 15th round, Cal State Fullerton), who struggled in Helena last summer, made his desert debut. He only faced four batters (walk, F8, walk, K), so his assignment seems to be injury-related.

Serigstad was followed by four first-year RHP's, three 22-year-old's and also 21-year-old 7th round JUCO pick Bowden Francis, listed at 6'5", 240, who made his pro debut:

AZL Indians Top of the 7th

Pitching Change: Bowden Francis replaces Tyler Thorne.

Jose Fermin doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Kenny Corey.

Michael Tinsley strikes out swinging.

Henry Pujols doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Kenny Corey. Jose Fermin scores.

Miguel Jerez doubles (3) on a line drive to center fielder Jesus Lujano. Henry Pujols scores.

Felix Fernandez pops out to shortstop Yadiel Rivera.

Michael Cooper strikes out swinging.

AZL Indians Top of the 8th

Tre Gantt grounds out, shortstop Yadiel Rivera to first baseman Moises Perez.

Johnathan Rodriguez reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Yadiel Rivera. Johnathan Rodriguez to 2nd.

Quentin Holmes strikes out swinging.

Jose Fermin flies out to left fielder Kenny Corey.

Weather: 92 degrees, sunny.

Wind: 3 mph, Varies.

First pitch: 10:00 AM.

T: 2:38.

More morning games, please! (Actually, only one more, 4th of July). Sure would help out our Link Reporting :).

One more look!

Does everyone else think Joe Ayrault didn't really have an argument? I thought Ray was out, granted, hard to tell if he ever touched the bag.

And what a play on the tag, barehanding the toss to the plate.

Didn't seem like it. Harrison was announced and went to the plate before being called back. Seemed perplexing; probably not a move Ayrault makes if he didn't get tossed. On that note, it was a super close play but also believed Ray was out on the potential winning run in the 9th that resulted in the ejection.

Nutty game - Winstom Salem just gifted it over with the missed pop ups in the 9th and misplaying the routine grounder that should have ended the 10th.

Certainly someone must have mentioned this before, but the post above about Clarks Runs created got me thinking enough to go look up the park factors. And last year Carolina had the lowest park factor of any team in the 3 High A leagues. It's 3 years average was still one of the 5 lowest. Given the slash lines so many guys are putting up I'm thinking we are in territory similar to when Corey Hart tore up the Southern league with an OPS barely over .800.

Yes! Gatewood, Clark and Stokes are all within the Carolina League top 30 in run creation. Diaz and Ray may get there as well with another hot week or so. Erceg has been ridiculous lately. They are all very age appropriate. People should be pumped about the Mudcat hitters not whining that they have low batting averages.

All look primed for huge July and August numbers after working though totally normal growing pains. Now Monte is there too! The group of prospects at Carolina is better than some entire orgs (Marlins, Giants).
