Today is the only day game (Noon Central) that the Maryvale guys will play all season.

Rehabbing from Tommy John, RHP Carlos Luna is listed as the starting first baseman despite his 60-day DL status. Surely, they'll correct that error shortly.

The Rattlers' starting pitcher tonight is... Josh Pennington.

The Rattlers' starting shortstop tonight is... Devin Hairston.

So that's new.

Hairston singled in his first AB.

Add Huira and Harrison to the mix and T-Rats should be better in 2nd half

Zack Brown has been pretty good as of late, looks like he's finally over the injury he had earlier this year.

I'll give credit where credit is due, since June 17th Trent Clark has raised his BA from .209 to .235, his OBP from .345 to .377, and his SLG from .316 to .370. He still has a ways to go, and the walks are great but at the next level pitchers are going to be less wild. The 27.6% K rate suggests he does a lot of looking, sometimes walking, sometimes striking out. He's going to have to be more aggressive.

Every draft there is a college pitcher or two who slips into the 4th round or later and blossoms in pro ball. The Brewers may have gotten lucky and nabbed two of them in the last four drafts.

Clark is also very, very young for level and was injured last year. While his K rate is high, partially because of his age, he's still a contact bat. I'd be curious to see how many of his walks are due to poor pitching control vs working the count/fouling pitches off earning that walk.

My lord Burnes. Dude is absolutely nuts. Straight up dominates every single start. Excited he might be ready next year. Lots of solid pitching prospects working their way up.

His adjustment from starting out almost in the stride compared to squaring up the batter now has made a tremendous impact on his game. His bulldog approach/mentality has always been awesome but this minor change he made has allowed for an increase in velocity and everything else to just fall in place more consistently. I still don't see him up in the rotation until late 2018 at the very earliest but probably 2019 (that's assuming everyone across the board is healthy and not having an imploding season).

I think you could say that Carolina got a little lucky tonight:

Carolina Bottom of the 9th

Monte Harrison singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Jack Charleston.

Dropped foul pop error by catcher Zack Collins.

Trent Clark walks. Monte Harrison to 2nd.

Max McDowell strikes out on a foul bunt.

Luis Aviles grounds out, first baseman Telvin Nash to pitcher Jack Charleston. Monte Harrison to 3rd. Trent Clark to 2nd.

Corey Ray walks.

Troy Stokes Jr. singles on a pop up to catcher Zack Collins. Monte Harrison scores. Trent Clark scores. Corey Ray out at home, catcher Zack Collins to first baseman Telvin Nash.

Sounds like Zack Collins had an inning to forget. How the heck do you single on a pop up to catcher?? If he dropped it, it would be an error; unless it was one of those everybody call it but nobody catches it and it drops untouched.

Final: Beloit 2, Wisconsin 1

Rattlers Drop Series Finale at Beloit

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

***

Wisconsin Box Score

You'll learn about the two Timber Rattler debuts in Chris' summary.

Wisconsin Game Log

Also from the write-up:

Both teams loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning and both teams managed to score one run.

Wisconsin Top of the 1st

Demi Orimoloye singles on a line drive to left fielder Luke Persico.

Devin Hairston singles on a ground ball to right fielder JaVon Shelby. Demi Orimoloye to 2nd.

Weston Wilson singles on a sharp ground ball to left fielder Luke Persico. Demi Orimoloye to 3rd. Devin Hairston to 2nd.

Tucker Neuhaus strikes out swinging.

Joantgel Segovia singles on a soft line drive to center fielder Luis Barrera. Demi Orimoloye scores. Devin Hairston to 3rd. Weston Wilson to 2nd.

Trever Morrison grounds into a double play, third baseman Eric Marinez to second baseman Trace Loehr to first baseman Miguel Mercedes. Joantgel Segovia out at 2nd.

NOTE: Morrison (.560 OPS entering the game) was 0-for-4 here, with his other three trips being K's. That would have been a preferred action here as well. What a miserable 2017 thus far for the 2016 12th round pick out of Oregon State.

Beloit Bottom of the 1st

Luis Barrera singles on a ground ball to center fielder Ryan Aguilar.

With Eric Marinez batting, Luis Barrera steals (10) 2nd base.

Eric Marinez walks.

Luke Persico singles on a sharp ground ball to right fielder Demi Orimoloye. Luis Barrera to 3rd. Eric Marinez to 2nd.

Miguel Mercedes out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Demi Orimoloye. Luis Barrera scores.

Trace Loehr flies out to left fielder Joantgel Segovia.

Edwin Diaz strikes out swinging, catcher Nathan Rodriguez to first baseman Weston Wilson.

Roegner to return to mound

Josh Flickinger, Beloit Daily News

BELOIT - Cameron Roegner hopes to appear on a pitching mound near you, and soon.

Unfortunately for local fans of the Beloit Memorial graduate and current member of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, Roegner won't appear in the four-game weekend series at Pohlman Field.

Roegner was officially placed on the disabled list prior to the series. He hopes to pitch later this week when the team travels to Cedar Rapids.

After throwing four hitless innings against Kane County Sunday, June 25, Roegner was all set to take his turn on the mound Friday night to start the game against the Snappers.

When he woke up Monday, he didn't feel right.

"I just was a little more sore than usual," Roegner said. "It's just something that pitchers deal with on occasion. You see guys go on and off the DL on occasion, and I'm hoping to just miss the one start. I've thrown the last few days, and everything feels good. I'm not worried about it at all."

Besides the four perfect innings, the outing against the Cougars in Grand Chute was notable for another reason: Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun was behind him in left field, while fellow rehabbing Brewer Jonathan Villar was at second.

Roegner took full advantage of Villar's presence as the second baseman ended up with four assists, including a pair of outstanding plays.

The unique opportunity to team up with a pair of big leaguers wasn't lost on Roegner.

"That's probably been the one time in pro ball I've been like 'Wow' about something," Roegner said. "I grew up a big fan of Braun (who debuted when Roegner was just about to turn 14). It's pretty sweet and just seeing how both of those guys approach the game and learning from them was a really cool experience. They were there for us if we had any questions. Everyone goes through the grind on the way to the big leagues. They've been there and they know that there is a lot of pressure. They understand exactly what you're going through."

Roegner said he learned more about the way to prepare for a game than any specific baseball skill.

"It was great to see and hear them talk about the way they prepared," Roegner said. "And when I talked to Braun, he told me it was the first time in his 11-year career he'd ever had to go on a rehab assignment. He said it was nice to kind of step back after being spoiled in the big leagues all that time. He said it helped him appreciate things a little more. But both of them were just great guys, awesome guys to talk to."

While the duo's baseball skill sets were obviously impressive, Roegner said their ability to think their way through the game set them apart as well.

"These guys are really, really smart," Roegner said. "Just watching Villar all weekend, he's reading swings, he's looking at counts, knowing what to look for and knowing where they might hit the pitch you are throwing. He just seemed to always be in the right spot at the right time. They aren't just big, strong guys with good hand-eye coordination. They really know the game."

After struggling mightily down the stretch of the first half, Wisconsin is off to a decent 5-6 start to the second half.

"That's one of the great things about single-A ball," Roegner said. "You can really flush that first half. It's not just hoping you can come back from 12 games back. You really can actually flush it. We're starting at square one and trying to reset as a team. I know we have more talent on our roster than what are record showed in the first half. We just have to go out and compete."

Final: DSL Rangers1 24, DSL Indians/Brewers 4

The Rangers scored nine runs in the first inning and rolled over the Indians/Brewers 24-4.

DSL Indians/Brewers Box Score

It was a start to forget for 20-year-old right-hander Juan Gomez, who gave up hits to the first nine batters he faced before being yanked without recording an out. All six pitchers who saw action in this one allowed at least one run, and unfortunately, all were Brewers. On a brighter note, the offense did manage 13 hits, with Jose Pena going 2-for-5 with a double while Luis Avila, Yorki Franco and Ismael Rosado managed two singles each.

DSL Indians/Brewers Game Log

The ugly first inning for Gomez is just so bad that it needs to be shared.

The Rangers scored two runs in the top of the first and never trailed as they beat the Brewers 4-2.

DSL Brewers Box Score

Brayan Salaya got the start and took the loss after going 1.1 innings and allowing a pair of runs. 20-year-old Venezuelan Jose Parra had his best relief outing of the year thus far, going 3.2 innings and giving up just one unearned run. Designated hitter Bryan Connell paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with two doubles while Francis Florentino and Jean Carmona added two hits each.
