2004 draft order

I have to agree, Dougy is in line for some almost mad props. As everyone has said, it cost us nothing and we may end up with two more early picks for bench types. Shrewed is the word that keeps popping in my mind. I also believe it was a great move getting both Cruz and Machado off the 40 man without losing them. The nugget miner has done all right considering what he is up against. I'm also hoping he's got a little Ron Wolf on him, aside from screwing up the first round picks. Find some guys from nowhere, and lie, lie, lie to the media. Tell them everything but what your really going to do, i.e., trading Spivey and not taking a prospect type in the rule 5 draft.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Getting Cruz and Machado off the 40 man was luck, plain and simple. I'm sure Doug had some kind of gauge to know if someone was going to be interested or not, but it still boils down to luck.

I couldn't disagree more. I'm pretty sure both were calculated moves. 40-man roster spots at this time of year are pretty hard to come by. Teams already are trying to decide which of their own players to keep which makes it even tougher to scan the waiver wire to see if there are any players worthy of a spot. Doug Melvin was in a pretty good position with several players probably knowing he could sneak Machado & Cruz off of the 40-man roster and get them get in due time.

Is there any site on the net that you're aware of that keeps a "running tot'" or up-to-the-latest-trade draft position board?

With all the trades happening with type A, B, and C players, and the comp picks associated with them, it would be interesting to see where the clubs are picking and gaining draft position(s).

Kevin Millwood has accepted arbitration from the Phillies since no one was willing to give him a 5-year deal for $15 million/season.

That rotation looks pretty dang good with Millwood, Wolf, Padilla, Myers & Milton. With the improvements made to the bullpen the Phillies have to be the team to beat in the NL East, and possibly all of the NL. If they fail to make the playoffs again, or even are slow out of the gates next spring, how long do you think Larry Bowa will last?

Only 5 players remaining that could affect draft compensation. I'm pretty sure Gabe White is going to stay in NY, I don't see anyone grabbing Surhoff, and I think the Braves might hold onto Julio Franco to platoon with young left-handed hitting Adam LaRoche at 1B, leaving Palmeiro & Vander Wal as the only players that still may affect the draft order. We'll find out more by tomorrow with the deadline to accept/decline arbitration at midnight tonight.

I'd give him two weeks. I still can't believe they kept him around... and I'm even more shocked that so many quality players were willing to go to Philly under his reign. Maybe the stories about his incompetence are overstated... the Philadelphia media has certainly been known to exaggerate things.

I agree regarding the larger point, too - the Phillies are definitely the team to beat in the NL as of now. If Milton has a good year, they will have one of the best rotations in all of the majors. And if Burrell figures out how to hit again, that lineup is going to be quite formidable.

Don't count out the Braves, though... they've been labeled dead before but they always figure out some way to win. It will be pretty tough this year, but that's what we've said many times before.

Anyone who's ever weatched Bowa manage a game knows how over his head he is on a nightly basis, the guy was one of the worst OBP guys in history, and he overreacts every time a player of his gets out, or makes an error, or gives up a ground ball that sneaks through the hole. He is the absolute king of "hunches" and managing with his heart, not his head.

I'd say he'll be gone if the Phils are under .500 at any point after April 15th.

I agree, Al... but at the same time, I only saw a handful of Phillies games last year. I don't like relying on what I see to determine how well a player does his job, so I have reservations indicting Bowa based only on my perceptions of his managing.

Still, I think he is definitely a poor manager... and that's why I am so surprised at the number of players who are willing to go there.

Here's a question I couldn't find answered anywhere:

In the case of a tie in the standings (Baltimore/Texas & St. Louis/LA in '03), how are the draft positions determined?

This might be a good addition to the draft section of the Brewerfan.net FAQ.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Thanks for the response. That came to mind, but I wanted to be sure. It's amazing that I couldn't find that simple tidbit with an internet search.

Doug Melvin responded to my email asking about the possible draft pick compensation for both Eddie Perez & John Vander Wal:

We do not think we receive draft choices because both players have filed twice as free agents. It is in question with the Commissioners office because they were listed as comp picks on the memo we received.

As I noted within the edited intial thread, I think this is another instance that proves just how serious people take the draft. That said, I don't think anyone around here would mind if the Commissioners office screws this one up...

Also, look out for the Yankees come June, they're loading up on picks. While they lost their own first rounder to the Dodgers for signing Paul Quantrill, they have gained the Astros first rounder for Pettite, their 2nd rounder for Clemens, the Padres 2nd rounder for Wells & 3 sandwich picks. For their ailing system that probably will provide a huge boost to put their usually strong farm system back on the map.

This is another reason why the compensation process needs to be fixed. They sign Quantrill & Sheffield yet they gain 5 early picks. I've said before that MLB should adopt a compensation system similar to the NFL in which they weigh players lost vs. those gained.

All in all, quite a few sandwich picks after round one.
