Erceg, Harrison and Diaz each hit home runs in the Sunday victory

By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | July 2, 2017 8:24 PM ET

Infielder Isan Diaz playing for the 2017 Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats)

The Mudcats roared out to a 9-0 lead only to see it cut to 9-8 in a wild game before prevailing 14-10. Isan Diaz seemed to get some confidence from his game winning hit yesterday and went 4-5 with a double and a home run. He added a stolen base for good measure. Lucas Erceg hit a 3-run blast in the opening frame but went 0-4 the rest of the way. Trent Clark was 1-3 with a double, two walks and a stolen base. Also contributing were Jake Gatewood (2-5, 2B, SB) and Cooper Hummel (2-4, BB, SB). Luis Aviles stole two bases. Monte Harrison hit his second home run for the Mudcats. Troy Stokes Jr was 3-5 and hit his 4th triple of the year.

Conor Harber (4 1/3 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 5 K) got the start and a no decision. He is really struggling with control since early in the year. Jordan Yamamoto (1 2/3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 0 K) ended up with the win. Eric Hanhold (3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K) picked up his first save of the year to close out the game.

Both Zack Collins and manager Willie Harris were thrown out of the game after Collins drew a walk. (Good thing the umpire didn't call strike three).

Snappers Erase Early Wisconsin Lead; Beat Rattlers 4-2

Timber Rattlers miss chance for third straight win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

The Rattlers struck early, with a Wes Wilson two-run homer putting them ahead 2-0 after the first half inning, but they were unable to score the rest of the way, and the pitching staff gave up 4 runs over the first 4 innings. Joantgel Segovia and Tucker Neuhaus both had a double.

Wisconsin starter Victor Diaz was responsible for all four runs allowed, dropped to 0-3 on the season, and saw his ERA balloon to 6.60. Daniel Brown and Colton Cross held the Snappers at bay for the final 4 2/3 innings.

I haven't chimed in much on Daniel Brown yet this year. He's been handed an interesting role on the team, not quite a piggyback starter, but often responsible for multiple innings. He's clearly a relief prospect, though I do think it's a good idea to give him as much work against RHB as possible. He hasn't faired extremely well against them, but at least you know how he looks against them. He's been good, if not dominant against LHB.

Wisconsin Game Log

Promising start:

Wisconsin Top of the 1st

Demi Orimoloye grounds out, shortstop Eric Marinez to first baseman Kyle Nowlin.

Joantgel Segovia flies out to center fielder Mike Martin.

Mario Feliciano walks.

Weston Wilson homers (2) on a line drive to left center field. Mario Feliciano scores.

Tucker Neuhaus strikes out swinging.

Brewers Battle Back But Have Streak Snapped

Grand Slam by Gomez not enough to push Brewers over the top as they fall 6-5 to Missoula

By Helena Brewers

(Photo: Helena Brewers)

Helena Boxscore

Another day, another Jose Gomez grand slam, another weird error allowing a Helena run to score, but unfortunately that wasn't enough and the winning streak is over at 6. The offense drew five walks, but scattered just three other hits besides the big fly.

I sang the praises of Michael Petersen last time out, but he was pulled after two innings/33 pitches in this game, presumably for allowing five runs in two innings (knock on wood, no injury). Alec Bettinger and Brandon Presley followed that up with five innings of scoreless ball, but another Brandon (Texiera) gave up a home run in the eighth for what would be the deciding run.

Helena challenged late, but couldn't tie the game - see below.

Helena Game Log

Runner on third, no outs, couldn't tie the game:

Helena Top of the 9th

Pitching Change: Abraham Almonte replaces Nestor Ramirez.

Franly Mallen singles on a sharp line drive to left fielder Ernie De La Trinidad.

With Yerald Martinez batting, missed catch error by Kyle Smith on the pickoff attempt, Franly Mallen to 3rd.

Yerald Martinez strikes out swinging, catcher Dominic Miroglio to first baseman Kyle Smith.

Antonio Pinero called out on strikes.

Dallas Carroll pops out sharply to first baseman Kyle Smith in foul territory.

Not an official injury, but may be sore today -- this game story from the Missoulian focuses on the Osprey, naturally, but does include other tidbits of note on the tight 6-5 H-Crew loss, including a comebacker to Petersen's leg.
