Final: DSL Rangers2 7, DSL Brewers 3

The Brewers tied things up with a run in the eighth inning and forced extra innings, but the Rangers walked off with a grand slam in the bottom of the tenth to defeat the Brewers 7-3.

Francis Florentino also had three hits and Jean Carmona stayed hot, going 2-for-5 with a double.

Why was Keston Hiura sent to Arizona? Easier to work on throwing?

Essentially, yes. He is there to "rehab" the arm but is still able to hit so why not.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Final: Omaha 9, Colorado Springs 6

Storm Chasers Snap Sox Streak

Brinson drives in three runs and Sox hit two homers in walk-off loss

Look, first of all, how hard is it to beat a team seven times in six days? The Sky Sox were this close.

The game summary linked above makes no mention of a story that will have impact at the big league level, in that RHP Tom Wilhelmsen was tasked with protecting a 6-4 lead for the save, and this happened:

Omaha Bottom of the 9th

Pitching Change: Tom Wilhelmsen replaces Wei-Chung Wang.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Raul Mondesi replaces Brayan Pena.

Raul Mondesi strikes out swinging.

Ruben Sosa singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brett Phillips.

With Billy Burns batting, throwing error by Tom Wilhelmsen on the pickoff attempt, Ruben Sosa to 2nd.

With Billy Burns batting, wild pitch by Tom Wilhelmsen, Ruben Sosa to 3rd.

Billy Burns singles on a ground ball to shortstop Nick Noonan. Ruben Sosa scores.

Dean Anna singles on a ground ball to pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen, deflected by first baseman Garrett Cooper. Billy Burns to 2nd.

Bubba Starling singles on a line drive to left fielder Kyle Wren. Billy Burns scores on the throw. Dean Anna to 2nd.

Ryan O'Hearn homers (13) on a fly ball to left field. Dean Anna scores. Bubba Starling scores.

Colorado Springs Box Score

First thing you notice atop the box is that SS Mauricio Dubon exited the game. Then you see why:

Col. Springs Top of the 5th

Andrew Susac walks.

Nate Orf grounds into a force out, second baseman Corey Toups to shortstop Dean Anna. Andrew Susac out at 2nd. Nate Orf to 1st.

Kyle Wren hit by pitch. Nate Orf to 2nd.

Mauricio Dubon pops out to second baseman Corey Toups.

Colorado Springs Sky Sox shortstop Mauricio Dubon ejected by HP umpire Nick Mahrley.

Lewis Brinson doubles (17) on a line drive to center fielder Bubba Starling. Nate Orf scores. Kyle Wren scores.

Ivan De Jesus Jr. strikes out swinging.

Speaking of Dubon, you may think you know all of his Honduras to America baseball journey, but this excellent feature article adds another layer while introducing the player to the Colorado Springs locals. Great job, Brent.

Final: Wisconsin 4, Beloit 2

Rattlers Beat Beloit

Gideon's homer puts Wisconsin in front; Trio of hurlers hold the lead to the end

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

As Chris notes in the linked game summary, the Rattlers are now 5-5 in the 2nd half. It'd be nice for these young men to experience a second half playoff chase.

Wisconsin Box Score

Wisconsin only earned their way on five times via three hits and two walks, nice that the pitching trio Chris highlighted performed so well, combining to walk only one themselves. That also accounts for this:

T: 2:18.

"T" being "Tidy".

Yes, RHP Luke Barker is 25, but this is his first stint in affiliated ball. The split-finger specialist has rebounded from an early May mini-slump to dominate since, check out the numbers at his linked name.

Wisconsin Game Log

Realize how lucky we are when the T-Rats are at home, to always get the archived video. Instead, picture this:

Wisconsin Top of the 4th

Weston Wilson grounds out, second baseman J. C. Rodriguez to first baseman Miguel Mercedes.

Tucker Neuhaus reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Eric Marinez.

Ronnie Gideon homers (8) on a fly ball to left center field. Tucker Neuhaus scores.

Chris painted the picture for you in his recap.

"In the top of the fourth, Tucker Neuhaus reached on an error with one out. Then, Gideon blasted the next pitch over the scoreboard in left-center for a two-run home run and the Rattlers were back in front 4-2. The homer was the eighth of the season for Gideon."

Final: Helena 11, Missoula 1

Whoa, this has been a fun stretch! The Helena Independent Record recaps this road victory for us --

Brewers' win streak now at 6

A week ago, .500 ball seemed a long way off for the Helena Brewers.

Now?

Thanks in part to a huge night from Jose Gomez, the Brewers are one game above .500 after defeating the Missoula Osprey 11-1 Saturday in Missoula.

It was the sixth win in a row for the Brew Crew.

The Brewers put up five runs in the fifth inning, beginning with a solo shot home run from Gomez, his first of the season. Dallas Carroll, who finished 1 for 5, followed that up when he singled on a line drive to center field, scoring two more runs. Gabriel Garcia wrapped up the inning’s scoring when he hit his second homer of the season, plating two more runs. Garcia finished 2 for 3 at the plate, walking twice.

Missoula mustered only run in the bottom of the fifth. Andy Yerzy hit a grounder that bought enough time for Keshawn Lynch to score.

The Brewers' offense kept chugging along in the sixth and seventh innings.

Shortstop Antonio Pinero hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the Brewers sixth run in the sixth inning. Pinero went 2 for 4. Nick Roscetti followed that up after a throwing error gave him plenty of room to run.

NOTE: Timeout. You read that and immediately have to visit the game log. We learn of a Zach Clark triple that set up the Pinero sac fly, and then, apparently, a true four-base error, really?

Helena Top of the 6th

Pitching Change: Jeff Bain replaces Kai-Wei Lin.

Zach Clark triples (1) on a sharp line drive to right fielder Juan Araujo.

Jose Gomez grounds out, shortstop Ryan Grotjohn to first baseman Francis Martinez.

Antonio Pinero out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Eduardo Diaz. Zach Clark scores.

Nick Roscetti reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Joey Rose. Nick Roscetti scores.

Chad McClanahan singles on a soft ground ball to right fielder Juan Araujo.

Dallas Carroll strikes out swinging.

Wow, that may be a Link Report first. Back to the game summary.

Gomez capped the scoring in the top of the seventh inning when he blasted a grand slam over the left center field wall. He finished the evening 3 for 5 with 5 RBIs.

Nelson Hernandez (2-0) made his third start on the mound and had another good outing. The 6-foot-2 righty threw five innings and gave up seven hits, but allowed only one earned run while walking one and striking out another.

The Brewers used three from the bullpen in relief, and the squad combined to give up two hits through four innings of work.

Helena outhit Missoula 13 to 9. The Osprey had some self-inflicted damage with three errors, while the Brewers played a clean game. Missoula left 10 men on base, while the Brewers stranded eight.

After starting the season looking for consistent hitting and pitching, the Brewers are looking like a force to be reckoned with in the Pioneer League. They'll try to extend the winning streak on Sunday, when they resume their three-game series against Missoula. The first pitch scheduled for 5:05 PM (6:05 Central).

Helena Box Score

This is your reminder that 23-year-old Cuban-born OF and 39th round 2016 draft pick Jose Gomez is listed at 5'3", 184. Congratulations, as these were the first two home runs of his pro career.

Catcher Brent Diaz has been impressive in his three games played. Still have no idea how he fell to the 29th round.

Helena Game Log

Might not have predicted this rout after this wasted opportunity in the 2nd --

Helena Top of the 2nd

Brent Diaz walks.

Gabriel Garcia walks. Brent Diaz to 2nd.

Jay Feliciano singles on a sharp line drive to center fielder Eduardo Diaz. Brent Diaz to 3rd. Gabriel Garcia to 2nd.

Zach Clark called out on strikes.

Jose Gomez pops out sharply to first baseman Francis Martinez.

Antonio Pinero strikes out on a foul tip.

Diaz delivers in the clutch in 6-5 Carolina comeback victory

The Mudcats came back from a five run deficit in the second to win 6-5 on Saturday night

By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | July 1, 2017 10:35 PM ET

Infielder Isan Diaz playing for the 2017 Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats)

The Mudcats came back from a 5-0 deficit to beat Winston-Salem 6-5. It was the largest comeback of the year for Carolina. They are now 11-1 against Winston-Salem on the year (thank you White Sox). Marcos Diplan (5 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) started and gave up 5 runs in the first two innings. Two of the runs were unearned due to a mis-played ground ball by Jake Gatewood. He pitched pretty well after those first two innings. Frank Lopez (3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) followed and kept the Mudcats in the game. He throws different pitches from different arm slots and changes speeds quite a bit from what I saw. Nate Griep worked the 9th, picking up his 17th save. After allowing a hit and a walk, he induced Jameson Fisher to ground into a double play to end the game.

Isan Diaz (1-1) pinch hit for Jonathan Oquendo in the 8th and came up with a two run single to put the Mudcats ahead. I haven't heard if he has some injury that is holding him back a bit. Trent Clark (1-2, 2 BB, 3 SB) started the scoring for Carolina with a walk, two stolen bases and scoring on a wild pitch. His second walk meant he had equal numbers of walks and hits on the year although hits went ahead when he got on with a drag bunt in the 8th. Troy Stokes Jr (2-5, 3B, SB), Jake Gatewood (2-4, 2B), Luis Aviles (2-3, 2B, BB, SB) and Max McDowell (2-3, 2 2B) also contributed.

Carolina Box Score

Carolina Game Log

Here's your winning rally:

Carolina Bottom of the 8th

Luis Aviles doubles (12) on a line drive to center fielder Joel Booker. Trent Clark to 3rd.

Pitching Change: Jack Charleston replaces Kyle Kubat.

Max McDowell walks.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Isan Diaz replaces Jonathan Oquendo.

Isan Diaz singles on a line drive to right fielder Louis Silverio. Trent Clark scores. Luis Aviles scores. Max McDowell to 2nd.

Corey Ray out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Jack Charleston to first baseman Brady Conlan. Max McDowell to 3rd. Isan Diaz to 2nd.

Troy Stokes Jr. reaches on a fielder's choice out, shortstop Johan Cruz to catcher Seby Zavala. Max McDowell out at home. Isan Diaz to 3rd.

Pitching Change: Louie Lechich replaces Jack Charleston.

Lucas Erceg grounds out, second baseman Toby Thomas to first baseman Brady Conlan.

Just watched it.

Dubon went up in the count 3-1, then took several steps towards 1st on pitch #5 which Dubon obviously thought was ball four. It wasn't called that way, though. Mauricio circled back behind the umpire and took his stance for the full count offering. He popped it up weakly in very shallow right, and was yelling at the umpire as the ball drifted into the air. Mr. Ump took offense and gave him an early shower.

AZL Brewers 20, AZL Padres #2 5

AZL Brewers Boxscore

June 29, 2016: 15 run 1st inning

July 1, 2017: 12 run 1st inning

There's way too much in the box score to try and examine it all here, but suffice it to say that it was a heckuva game.

The Baby Brewers' offense only had four extra base hits - a lot of the offense was generated by singles, walks and a few well placed AZL Padres errors. Two members of the offense had three hits, a "rehabbing" Yadiel Rivera and NDFA Julian Jarrard. Two of Jarrard's hits were doubles. Pat McInerney's lone hit was a double, and Tyler Lawrence hit a home run in one of his two PAs. McInerney and Francisco Thomas each walked twice.

Poor Moises Perez was 0-6 with four strikeouts, and grounded into a double play.

Starter Joaquin De La Cruz kept the Padres from getting back into the game, though he allowed three runs in five innings of work.

AZL Brewers Game Log

Not quite 15, but it'll do:

AZL Brewers Top of the 1st

Jesus Lujano singles on a ground ball to right fielder Tirso Ornelas.

With Yadiel Rivera batting, Jesus Lujano steals (4) 2nd base.

Yadiel Rivera reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Eguy Rosario. Jesus Lujano to 3rd.

With Keston Hiura batting, passed ball by Luis Campusano, Jesus Lujano scores. Yadiel Rivera to 3rd.

Keston Hiura singles on a line drive to center fielder Robbie Podorsky. Yadiel Rivera scores.

Pat McInerney walks. Keston Hiura to 2nd.

Kenny Corey singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Eguy Rosario. Keston Hiura to 3rd. Pat McInerney to 2nd.

Robie Rojas out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Tirso Ornelas. Keston Hiura scores.

Julian Jarrard singles on a line drive to right fielder Tirso Ornelas. Pat McInerney to 3rd. Kenny Corey to 2nd.

Moises Perez strikes out swinging.

Francisco Thomas singles on a ground ball to left fielder Luis Castro. Pat McInerney scores. Kenny Corey scores. Julian Jarrard to 2nd.

Jesus Lujano singles on a line drive to center fielder Robbie Podorsky. Julian Jarrard scores. Francisco Thomas to 3rd.

Yadiel Rivera singles on a ground ball to center fielder Robbie Podorsky. Francisco Thomas scores. Jesus Lujano to 3rd.

Keston Hiura hit by pitch. Yadiel Rivera to 2nd.

With Pat McInerney batting, passed ball by Luis Campusano, Jesus Lujano scores. Yadiel Rivera to 3rd. Keston Hiura to 2nd.

Pat McInerney walks.

Kenny Corey reaches on a fielding error by first baseman Justin Paulsen. Yadiel Rivera scores. Keston Hiura to 3rd. Pat McInerney to 2nd.

With Helena back in action, it seems odd that Lara is still in Appleton. After a hot start, Feliciano has cooled off considerably (.531 OPS in June, now down to .666 for the season). Orimoloye down to .659 with a .279 OBP.

Feliciano's numbers are still very respectable for his age and position, but if Orimoloye goes back to Appleton next year he will be essentially league average age. I personally think that within one year of league average age is for all intents and purposes "league average", and someone has to be at least two years younger than average (like Feliciano, he's three years younger) for me to consider him "young".

I also believe it's not just age, but the number of years of professional coaching a player has that should be taken into consideration. College players don't get nearly as much coaching as professional players the same age do - there are restrictions on how much practice time they can have in-season and out-of-season. Just because a college player is a couple of years older doesn't mean that he's maxed out in terms of development.
