Coulter's fourth inning homer lifts Shuckers over Barons

Jon Perrin tossed four shutout innings in relief to earn victory

By Biloxi Shuckers

DSC_8799_5gd6ednz_q2gyd5a7.jpg

Clint Coulter launches his team-leading eighth home run in Friday night's win in Birmingham (Mark P Driscoll)

Biloxi Shuckers Box Score

Quick Summary:

Taylor Williams was back on the mound tonight and went two innings on what I imagine is a pretty strict pitch count coming off injury. Williams has not been very efficient or effective in his two outings since coming back racking up 40 pitches today in just two innings. Blake Allemand with 3 hits and Clint Coulter with a homer power the offense to a 5-2 win.

Pitching Summary:

On the mound, Taylor Williams (2.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB, K) started the game while Jon Perrin (4.0 IP, 3 H, 5 K), Travis Hissong (2.0 IP, 2 BB, K), Tayler Scott (0.2 IP, 2 H, ER, BB), and Matt Ramsey (0.1 IP, K) provided the relief.

Hitting Summary:

Clint Coulter (1-4, 2 RBI, R, HR)

Dustin Houle (2-4, 2B, R)

Blake Allemand (3-4, R, 3B, RBI)

Biloxi Shuckers Game Log

Erceg & Clark launch big flies in 9-3 victory

Cody Ponce struck out six over 6.2 innings and won his second straight

By Carolina Mudcats | June 30, 2017 11:23 PM ET

Cody Ponce pitching for the 2017 Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats)

Cody Ponce (6 1/3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 6 K) threw 100 pitches, 61 for strikes, in picking up his 7th win of the season. He had a 2/5 ground out/fly out statistic. Scott Grist (1.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) followed and Nate Griep (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) finished the game off for his 16th save.

Lucas Erceg finished 2-4 with his HR and had 3 RBI. Trent Clark was 2-2 with a home run and two walks. Trent now has 54 walks on the season, about 5 behind Zach Collins of Winston-Salem for the league lead. Also contributing were Corey Ray (2-5, 2B), Jonathan Oquendo (1-1, BB) and Max McDowell (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI).

Carolina Box Score

Corey Ray doubles (18) on a line drive to right fielder Luis Alexander Basabe.

Troy Stokes Jr. reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Brady Conlan. Corey Ray to 3rd.

Lucas Erceg grounds into a force out, shortstop Danny Mendick to second baseman Toby Thomas. Corey Ray scores. Troy Stokes Jr. out at 2nd. Lucas Erceg to 1st.

Jake Gatewood pops out to shortstop Danny Mendick.

Isan Diaz pops out to third baseman Brady Conlan.

Winston-Salem Top of the 4th

Defensive Substitution: Jonathan Oquendo replaces second baseman Isan Diaz, batting 5th, playing second base.

***

Was this disciplinary based on a reaction to the at-bat, or could he have tweaked something on his swing? Other than 23 of his 55 hits going for extra bases, this has been, to put it very mildly, a truly disappointing season thus far for Diaz.

Final: Wisconsin 7, Beloit 4

Neuhaus Knocks Two Homers in Rattlers Win

Wisconsin starts road trip with 7-4 win over the Beloit Snappers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Chris includes his view from the booth in his always fine write-up linked above. You'll also learn about Tucker Neuhaus' propensity for multi-homer games in 2017, along with a tidbit on the Rattlers' prior road game woes.

***

Here's a note from the Beloit Daily News helping explain a new DL stint, appears minor --

BELOIT - Beloit Memorial graduate Cameron Roegner will be back at Pohlman Field this weekend, but the southpaw won't be taking the mound for his Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Roegner was scheduled to start Friday night's game for the Rattlers against the Beloit Snappers, but won't due to some minor soreness.

It would have been the second start of the season for Roegner at Pohlman Field. The first time around, he held Beloit to one earned run on three hits on May 24, making it a triumphant return to the place of many high school and American Legion ball triumphs.

Things have gone well for Roegner since a tough start to his 2017 season. After his first four outings, Roegner carried an unsightly 10.32 ERA, thanks mostly to two disastrous innings.

Since that time, Roegner has gone 3-2 with an ERA of an even 3.00 in 45 innings. He's coming off perhaps his finest outing of the season, a four-inning stint to close a Wisconsin win over Kane County Sunday. Roegner didn't allow a baserunner in four innings, striking out one along the way.

***

Wisconsin Box Score

Fine game for 1B Ronnie Gideon, but he may want to put the brakes on the SB attempts (now only 1-for-6). Even with three hits on the final day of the month, 18-year-old catcher Mario Feliciano's OPS for June was .531. Don't let that take away from what he's accomplished thus far, I already wish the kid could take a five-month nap, but that's still two months away, more if the Brewers keep him busy at instructionals. Wes Wilson reached three times via two walks and an HBP.

Wisconsin Game Log

Five years into his career as a 17-year-old draft pick, still isn't quite clear exactly what the Brewers have in Tucker Neuhaus, is it? The low OBP is a concern despite the power output.

On top of that, we can't get enough of Freddy Peralta as of late, such kudos for his command of the English language.

AUDIO via Thursday's Sky Sox pre-game: Manager Rick Sweet's always worthwhile take on things, even more fun when the team is playing so well

We learn that SS Yadiel Rivera is in Maryvale to specifically work on his offense, so that's what his "DL" stint is all about. Rivera is out of options heading into 2018. Rivera has a .232/.293/.325 line with the Sky Sox this season. You'll get a Rivera update when the Maryvale game gets linked a few posts from now.

Ryan Cordell and Kirk Nieuwenhuis are both suffering from upper back / trap injuries, both considered mild, and should be available soon. Cordell is on the DL, Captain Kirk is not.

Oh, and Sweet thinks playing a team nine games in a row (even if the Sky Sox have won the first six) is STUPID.

Nice to see Perrin back and striking out people on the regular. Looking forward to seeing what he does from here on out.

Final: Arizona Brewers 4, Arizona Reds 1

A-Crew off to 5-1 start...

Maryvale Box Score

19-year-old Puerto Rican LHP Wilfred Saloman bounced back from his stateside debut to toss six scoreless innings here (zero BB's, 2 K's). In four of his five starts this season, he hasn't allowed an earned run covering 20 innings. Just turned 22-year-old non-drafted signee RHP Branden Nunn (Missouri Baptist) tossed three innings, allowing just one run, for the save, in his 2nd pro outing.

Yadiel Rivera (see earlier Rick Sweet interview post in this thread) homered and singled as he's working on his offensive game.

You'll often see catchers split games in the desert, NDFA Kyle Beam had his first pro AB as the 2nd half of the catcher tandem (K). Beam is one of six catchers on this roster.

Maryvale Game Log

Besides Rivera, four players singled and four players walked. 39th rounder Robert Henry, playing right field in this game, was the one who did both.
