Who is he? I watched some of that game but, YAWN, couldn't take any more of that UCLA "offense". More like offensive.

Who is he?

From Colbyjack's 2002 draft recap article:

5th Round: Jarrad Page-IF/OF-6'1", 190, California HS. UCLA football recruit as a defensive back, which in itself will likely mean that Page will be a very pricey if not tough sign. He could sign a deal that allows him to play football in the fall. As a 5th round pick, the Brewers likely did their homework & must be confident that they will be able to sign him. As a pro, Page projects to be a multi-talented IF, although many believe he could play anywhere on the field given his impressive overall athleticism. Jack Zduriencik has already noted that Page is projected as a 2B down the road. Has the speed, power potential, range, arm & hitting projection to be considered a legitimate 5-tool prospect.

IIRC I don't think Page got much playing time at UCLA last spring. I remember reading the season preview for last year's Bruins' team and he had a chance to win the team's starting SS job, but obviously didn't. I'm sure they expect bigger & brighter things out of him this coming season.

I didn't see the bowl game the other night, but I watched a couple of UCLA football games just to watch him play, as the local Fox Sports channel seemed to show 5-6 of their games this season. I must say from what I saw of him I wasn't impressed. He just didn't seem to play with much desire, almost like he didn't want to get overly physical, and as a safety that's hard to play without. He's one heck of an athlete, so hopefully for his own sake he has a breakthrough season on the baseball diamond.

I wish I was in a position to turn down $750,000 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

Colby, I was going to include similar information about his football "prowess" in my initial post but decided against it since I don't purport to be a football expert. I never played the game competitively and therefore don't know all of the nuances. Plus, DB's are often outside of a TV screen. But, yeah, I'm not impressed with Page the football player, as well. Hopefully, he can justify his decision on the diamond.

He obviously didn't discuss it with a financial advisor, as there's no way a 4 year California education is worth half that much. I'm sure he's a typical kid who assumes NFL glory will be automatic, but that was a foolish decision, especially when one considers he could easily go to a school that uses the trimester system and get a couple semesters in every offseason.

As much as I poke fun at turning down that kind of money, I really can never get down on a kid for choosing college over cash. Far too often we see it happening the other way around, to much greater extremes. While a California education may not come close to $750,000 penny for penny, a college education while also being able to play on both the football & baseball teams of a respected D1 program truly is priceless.

He has the size/speed ratio to be a 1st day pick in the NFL draft when he enters. If he is picked in round 2 or 3, he would receive a signing bonus similar to what he would have received from the Crew. The odds of a 5th round pick in baseballs draft making the majors is very low.

A previous post mentioned that it was fairly unlikely for a 5th round pick to get to the majors....

Any idea on a percentage breakdown for players drafted in various rounds - in terms of making the majors....I realize this a bit of micro-trivia, but I figured if anone would know.......

my guess would be 65% of 1st rounders, 25 % of 2nd rounders, and 15 % of 3rd rounders....

You had me up until this point X. While I agree that 5th rounders are a longshot to make it to the bigs, I don't think that played a part in his decision. "Nah, I'm not going to sign, 5th rounders never make it..."

And molitor fan, I'm not sure of the percentage, I know BA has done some studies, but your figures look like pretty good guesstimations to me. If I remember & muster up the ambition I'll try to look for BA's study on this from sometime last spring.
