Final: DSL Rays2 7, DSL Indians/Brewers 3

Once again, it was a big inning that hurt the Brewers co-op team, as the Rays plated five runs in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Indians/Brewers.

DSL Indians/Brewers Box Score

Henry Medina got the start and went six inning, allowing just two unearned runs. Melvin Mendez followed and worked a clean seventh inning, before getting lit up for five runs in the eighth. Jefrey Tamares came on to bail Mendez out with a double play, then tossed a scoreless ninth, but the damage was already done. 18-year-old Yorki Franco finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, with catcher Bryan Torres collecting the only other hit among Brewers farmhands.

Final: DSL Brewers 1, DSL Rojos 0

The Brewers shut out the Reds on Wednesday and managed to provide just enough offense to eke out a 1-0 victory and get back to .500 on the season.

DSL Brewers Box Score

Maiker Pinto got the start and earned his first win of the season, throwing seven innings of shutout ball, scattering five hits while striking out three. Jesus Brea followed and worked the final two scoreless innings to earn his fourth save. Luis Valdez paced the Brewers' offense, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Anderson Melendez also added a double while Francis Florentino and Jean Carmona each chipped in a single. Outfielder Pablo Abreu was out of action for the third straight game. He last played in Saturday's loss to the Phillies, and still no sign of Ernesto Martinez, Jr., who hasn't seen the field since June 7th.

Offense held quiet in 2-1 loss at Buies Creek

Buies Creek starter Framber Valdez struck out 11 over eight innings against Carolina

By Carolina Mudcats | June 28, 2017 11:12 PM ET

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/7/4/231791874/cuts/16x9_LucasErcegFielding_hv3bzpal_tp1yti3w.jpg

Kodi Medeiros' (4 1/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 4 K) struggles as a starter continued tonight. He threw 98 pitches in less than 5 innings. The bullpen work was very good though. Wuilder Rodriguez (2 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) continued his dominance of the Carolina league despite his troubles in Biloxi. Brad Kuntz (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) has been on a very good run himself.

Lucas Erceg was 1-2 with a walk and a sacrifice fly and was the only Mudcat who did not strike out at least once. Jose Cuas was 1-3 with a double and scored the only run. With Erceg on 2nd and then 3rd and one out in the ninth, both Jake Gatewood and Isan Diaz struck out to strand the tying run.

AZL Brewers 5, AZL White Sox 4

AZL Brewers Boxscore

I had forgotten that the new 10th inning rule being tested in the complex leagues existed. As you'll see in the game log snippet posted below, the Brewers won after they had a runner, Robie Rojas in this case, placed on second base to begin the inning. The "leadoff" batter Robert Henry, who earlier in the game drove in a run with his first professional hit, tried to bunt Rojas over to third. On the ensuing throw to get Henry at first, the pitcher threw the ball away, Rojas scored from second, and the Brewers won the game on a throwing error on one batter. Captivating stuff.

The Brewers had a season low 8 (!) hits, and only walked twice, but came away with the victory nonetheless. Keston Hiura, who already may be getting bored of AZL pitching, was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. He's hitting .563/.600/1.125 after about 20 pro PAs, though he still has yet to play on the field. Presumably he's on a throwing program and after we see him at second base a few times in Arizona, he'll be off to Wisconsin.

The aforementioned Robert Henry was the only other Baby Brewer with two hits, his first two as a pro. Rehabbing Tyrone Taylor, who must be close to returning to Biloxi, went 1-3 with a walk and stolen base. NDFA Kyle Beam made his pro debut, albeit as a defensive replacement that did not come to the plate.

As mentioned a few posts above, Josh Pennington made his organizational debut on a rehab assignment. He threw two innings, which may mean he's a little further along that the normal rehab-er. He allowed a single, and struck out two. 20th round pick Austin Rubick made his pro debut in the 10th inning, and was immediately inserted into the runner on second and no out scenario that won the Brewers the game in the bottom half. He got out of the "jam" - see the game log below.

AZL Brewers Game Log

This happens now:

AZL White Sox Top of the 10th

Defensive Substitution: Kyle Beam replaces center fielder Tyrone Taylor, batting 1st, playing first base.

Defensive switch from left field to center field for Jesus Lujano.

Defensive switch from first base to left field for Pat McInerney.

Pitching Change: Austin Rubick replaces Christian Taugner.

Austin Crutcher starts inning at 2nd base.

Lenyn Sosa out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Austin Rubick to first baseman Kyle Beam. Austin Crutcher to 3rd.

Michael Hickman lines out to left fielder Pat McInerney.

Antonio Rodriguez flies out to right fielder Robert Henry.

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 10th

Pitching Change: Michael McCormick replaces Greg Minier.

Robie Rojas starts inning at 2nd base.

Robert Henry singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Michael McCormick. Robie Rojas scores. Throwing error by pitcher Michael McCormick.

Blazek Leads Sox To Fourth Straight Win

Noonan drives in two to secure seventh straight home win

Colorado Springs Boxscore

Perhaps Michael Blazek performed voodoo on Chase Anderson, as hours after Blazek's superb start in Colorado Springs, Anderson went down with his oblique injury. While the strikeouts weren't there, Blazek held Omaha to one unearned* run over 7 2/3 innings pitched. He scattered six hits and walked one. Important to note he did this at altitude in Colorado Springs, so no small feat.

*The unearned run scored as a result of a throwing error... on Michael Blazek. Seems wrong it should be unearned.

Wei-Chung Wang stranded one of Blazek's baserunners in the eighth, got another out in the ninth, and Rob Scahill closed it out.

Mauricio Dubon had 2 hits in his 4th game with the Sky Sox to pace the offense. Nate Orf drew 3 walks, and Jett Bandy drew 2 walks. Nick Noonan had the lone extra base knock, an eighth inning double that extended then lead from one run to three.

Colorado Springs Game Log

Noonan's big hit:

Col. Springs Bottom of the 8th

Lewis Brinson reaches on a fielding error by pitcher Eric Stout.

Brett Phillips called out on strikes.

Ivan De Jesus singles on a line drive to center fielder Terrance Gore. Ivan De Jesus to 2nd. Lewis Brinson advances to 3rd, on a fielding error by center fielder Terrance Gore.

Eric Stout intentionally walks Jett Bandy.

Nick Noonan doubles (5) on a line drive to center fielder Terrance Gore. Lewis Brinson scores. Ivan De Jesus scores. Jett Bandy out at home on the throw, center fielder Terrance Gore to second baseman Dean Anna to catcher Cam Gallagher.

Nate Orf walks.

Andrew Susac strikes out swinging.

Shortstop Antonio Pinero, who seems to incite roars from the Kindrick Legion faithful at least once a game, showed off his defensive prowess again on Wednesday. Pinero slid, snagged a hard hit grounder and gunned a ball to first base to record the out in eighth inning.
