Ball was hit behind him. 9 times out of 10 the SS goes to 1B. Can't really blame Thames for a great play.

I disagree. That was not a difficult play. And in that situation they are going to go for the out at third. Thames knows he is not fast and that was not smart base running.

And I'm going to disagree with you. Swanson was going up the middle away from third base. Almost never is a SS going to make that throw to 3B when there's an easy out at 1B.

That's fine. I think I would agree with you if it was a runner with decent speed, but Thames is not the quickest. And the SS knows that. Yes it was close, but I don't think that risk was worth taking there.

Plus, there was a very good chance - from Thames' point of view - that the ball was going up the middle. It obviously was closer to Swanson than he thought, but breaking for third is pretty much automatic when the ball is hit to your left.

He was out and it wasn't questionable.

It was a very nice play by their SS. Not the best play ever but a great reaction to the situation. A step slower and it's 1sr and 3rd with no one out and we are all happy that he took the chance.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Swanson has to field a hard hit grounder, spin around 360 and throw blindly to 3rd base. That throw is off by a foot and he's safe. The ball was hit behind him as well, so it's not like it was a routine grounder right to Swanson. Hell, there was a decent chance that ball wouldn't have been fielded cleanly.

Hell of a play by Swanson to get the out.

It was a bad decision by Swanson but he pulled it off. I don't have a big issue with Thames running on that play either. There are so many ways that play can go bad for Atlanta many of which let Thames score.
