Peralta to 10-day DL (calf); Suter recalled

djoctagone

right calf strain for wily peralta. brent suter recalled.

after the 10 days are up, the brewers can opt to assign peralta to the minor leagues for up to 30 days of rehab before being forced to keep him on the dl, activate him and return him to the 25-man, or activate him and designate him for assignment.

convenient way for peralta to potentially get some work in the minors and straighten things out.

It's harder to scam the DL like in the minors, but this is exactly what I thought when I saw this... being optioned without being optioned.

Calf strains seem to be an epidemic this year with the Brewers, Braun, Guerra and now Peralta. The field at Miller Park might be slanted. They may need to regrade.

Guerra's at least had nothing to do with the field. He was forced to run the bases which pitchers aren't used to doing and just came out of the box awkwardly. It is why the AL is better than the NL most years, the NL teams lose a chunk of their pitching to hitting and running the bases and they get to rest guys through the DH slot. This rule has to change one way or the other and soon.

peralta starts his rehab tonight in colorado springs.

while the brewers can technically wait 30 days to activate him, they plan on only a couple of outings before determining his roster status. pretty safe to assume that once mlb games resume after the all-star break, we'll all know peralta's future with the brewers.

I am abnormally excited to have 2 LHP options in the bullpen. Without any stats to back this up, I would assume our bullpen gets 15% better simply by NOT having to throw Drake and Torres out there against a left handed lineup.

Drake's a reverse-split guy, his numbers against lefties are pretty good, and a lot better than his stats against righties.

vs. RHB: 56 PA, .347/.418/.612, 14/6 K/BB (.455 BABIP)

vs. LHB: 91 PA, .232/.300/.329, 25/8 K/BB (.309 BABIP)

If anything you should be arguing against Drake pitching to righties, although his numbers there seem to be suffering from pretty bad luck if BABIP is to be believed.

Anyways, Hader would be a great lefty specialist but most likely won't be used that way often, and Suter is now in the rotation at least for now, so I guess we'll still be using Drake against lefties, which looks like a good idea to me.

Peralta will get DFA'ed, and then I would guess outrighted to Colorado Springs once healthy.

There's no way you can really justify an option or DFA for anyone on the 25 right now to make room for Peralta.

Count me as stunned. I was certain we'd hear Peralta was DFA'd any day now. Maybe he's being carried until he can be used as a salary offset in a deal.

That being said if you DFA him that ten day window to trade him will cover the trade deadline anyways.

the latest collective bargaining agreement reduced the window from ten days to seven.

i'm thinking that peralta is with the club so he can be activated and available if a trade depletes the club's 25-man roster. allows for a day or two for an acquired player to join the brewers, and that point, peralta could be designated for assignment.
