Scouting Map

www.brewerfan.net/scouting.jsp

The scouting map/scout list has been updated, and this year I decided to add the list of the Brewers professional scouts. The pro scouting dep't. went through quite the overall. The amateur side didn't have as many changes. Former Central Florida Area Scout Fernando Arango is now the Latin American scouting coordinator with 2 scouts assigned to him: One to cover the Dominican Republic, and the other to cover Venezuela. There is also a new Area Scout in the GA, SC & NC area.

The biggest change is in Canada, where the Brewers now have 6 scouts. One is a coordinator, and aside from the 2 scouts in Ontarrio, which I believe is the Canadian province with the highest population, all of the other scouts come from different provinces. I'm guessing these guys are all part-timers, probably coaches for college or HS scout and/or legion teams. I'm sure this will draw some scrutiny from skeptical doubters given the Canadian connection with Melvin & Ash, but I'm guessing this is a relatively cheap expense while covering a huge country. Promising canucks drafted early the past couple of years include Justin Morneau, Adam Loewen & Jeff Francis. I'm sure we'll see more Canadian draftees & undrafted free agents in the coming year(s).

Do you think that it is just a mistake since there is not a west coast crosschecker listed? Also, what do you know about Jeff Cornell? I believe Poloni is known for scouting pitching prospects including finding Tim Hudson.

Cornell was the Brewers roving area scout last year, so he got bumped up to a crosschecker. I'm not sure what players he might have been responsible for. No idea what happened to Wilson, but I doubt it was a typo.

Colby,

As of December, Wilson was listed as the Brewers' National Scouting Coordinator on a website for an Arizona camp. I can't imagine that the team would not have a crosschecker assigned to the west coast.

Ric Wilson has indeed moved on, he is now the National Crosschecker for the Anaheim Angels.

There was a mistake in the media guide. Tom Allison should be listed as the West Coast Crosschecker while Jeff Cornell is now the Midwest guy. I will be sure to make that change to the scouting map.

Colby,

Is Ric Wilson Anaheim's Larry Doughty then or was it a parallel (sp?) move? It is interesting to note that Wilson, Allison, and Heck have all been in the same position since '99. That definitely helps a team when it comes to drafting.

Where can you find information about them? just interested in where they came from, history with the club, etc.

Unfortunately we don't have background info for any of our scouts. I know from time to time MassBrew posts info on new hirings on the minor league forum, and cress also digs up info on our scouts once in a while, usually when these hirings are made. My suggestion would be to type in their names in your favorite search engine. Good luck with that, as I have done this a few times myself with little to no results. Basically these guys are the unsung heroes, and there isn't much in print written about them.

I've heard a few things about some of these guys here & there, but not enough to offer an established opinion on them. I can tell you that Harvey Kuenn Jr. is the son of Harvey Kuenn, manager of the amazing Brewers squad from 1982. Yes, I'm brilliant.
