Mudcats outslug Nationals in first half finale victory

Diaz, Stokes and Wilson each hit home runs in Sunday's victory

By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | June 18, 2017 7:29 PM ET

When you read that headline, you probably assumed the home run was by Isan Diaz right? Nope. This time it was Brandon Diaz getting his first hit of the year. Diaz has spent most of his year on the "DL" but has been with the Mudcats the whole time. He is often seen with shin guards on as he helps with catching pitchers and is generally the first man to greet players at the dugout. Always seems to be in a good mood. Anyway, he hit a 3 run home run to left center in the 2nd inning to give the Mudcats a 4-0 lead. Troy Stokes Jr. (2-5, HR, SB) added a solo home run over the video board in left field to extend the lead to 5-0.

Marcos Diplan (5 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) got the start and retired the first 9 hitters. After that his command fell apart and he gave up the 5 runs that tied the game in the 4th and 5th innings. Conor Harber (2/3 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 1 K) followed and couldn't get through 1 inning. Quintin Torres-Costa (3 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K) finished the game to pick up his 6th win of the year. He was really the only effective pitcher for either team.

The Mudcats scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th to regain the lead on a single off the wall by Weston Wilson (3-5, HR, 5 RBI) that plated two. Isan Diaz held up to see if the ball would be caught holding it to a single. The final 4 runs for the Mudcats came in the 6th capped off by a Weston Wilson 3 run home run. Unfortunately, one of the stadium cameras was knocked out by a foul ball and we never saw that home run. Not even Mass Haas will get video of that one.

Isan Diaz was 2-3 with a double and two walks. Jake Gatewood and Lucas Erceg were each 1-3 with a double and two walks.

Rattlers End First Half With Loss at Kane County

Wisconsin falls for tenth straight time

Wisconsin Boxscore

The Rattlers slump to the finish of the first half, losers of 20 of their final 23 games. They were a game over .500 on May 27th, but are now 16 games under .500 less than four weeks later. The offense was once again sluggish, though they did briefly take the lead in the 5th on a Trey York single that scored newcomer A.J. Murray.

Parker Berberet, however, was unable to hold the 2-1 lead for very long as he surrendered 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th, and then another in the bottom of the 6th. Tom Jankins pitched ok in his 4 inning start, though he allowed 8 baserunners. Luke Barker continued his earned run-less streak.

Wisconsin's next game is on Thursday, after the Midwest League All-Star break. We'll see if a fresh start helps, and we might see a few roster changes in the interim as well.

Final: Colorado Springs 5, Oklahoma City 2

Blazek Leads Sox To Win

Cooper records 56 RBI with two-RBI afternoon

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Michael Blazek recorded the second-longest outing of his career Sunday afternoon against Oklahoma City. (Paat Kelly photo)

Garrett Cooper tied Andy Wilkins' season-high RBI total from 2016 to help the Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeat the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field.

That's an amazing stat to kick off the summary, be sure to read the rest at the link above...

Colorado Springs Box Score

Sixty-two strikes among 89 pitches for efficient and effective Michael Blazek; Ryan Cordell, again valuably splitting time between 3B and RF, is now 8-for-11 in SB attempts; yes, 1B Garrett Cooper was 4-for-4, his line is now .362/.419/.600, and somehow doesn't feel overly inflated by Pacific Coast League environments.

Colorado Springs Game Log

Weather: 73 degrees, sunny.

Wind: 17 mph, In from RF.

T: 2:18.

Pretty good day on the farm, with the exception of the Rattlers who have been on an incredibly bad run. 26-42, weren't they. 500 not all that long ago?

They were 23-23 so my math says 3-19 over their last 22 games.

They have the highest ERA and have allowed the most home runs in the league which makes it more peculiar (knowing nothing outside of boxscores) that they changed pitching coaches in the offseason.

T-Rats are also dead last in the league in runs scored and OPS so they have consistency down. Unfortunately not very inspiring.
