Best play ever by a Brewer's SS? I'm having a hard time remembering a better one.

Woah, there has to be a better one. Heck I think I have seen better by Arcia. Really good display of how strong of an arm he has, but it isn't like he had to really rush it or do anything off balance. He was playing deep and made a nice dive, but he has a lot of time to get up and set his feet. Definitely a SC Top 10 play of the day...but I really don't think it was much more than that.

It doubt it is the best ever but I think you are underselling how great his arm is that allows such plays. He didn't have to rush the throw because of his arm. Virtually anyone else would have had to rush and throw off balance to make up for not having Arcia's arm. That doesn't make the play itself any less amazing.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

This one is pretty similar.

Yes, but Arcia's was better. Arcia was deeper in LF and threw a strike to first instead of a 2 hopper.

I disagree.

Arcia had a longer throw and a faster runner. He got up and planted and generated that throw basically from all leverage and arm strength.

You can't just shake off Escobar's though. It looks like his legs start slipping and fires that ball entirely by arm. It can bounce. It had plenty of heat on it.

Both plays were great by great defensive players.

I have no idea which play was harder to make but Arcia's looked better to me because of the throw. I'm not saying we shouldn't have traded Escobar but had we not traded him we'd have went from Hardy to Escobar to Arcia at short. I'd be hard pressed to think of any team that had three consecutive defensive wizards at short that equalled those three.

Was Hardy really that good? I recall him being pretty sure handed but really lacking in range. Far better than a guy like Yuni B of course. :)

Hardy has always graded out extremely well by both publicly available systems, +89 career DRS & +103 career UZR, for whatever that is or isn't worth.

Out of 26 individual seasons (13 seasons x 2 systems) he only ever graded out in the negative once @ -5 DRS in 2010, though UZR had him at +7.5 that same season so who's to say what the truth was.

Man, another great play by Arcia today. Ranged way behind second, spun and threw a perfect throw to first, all while his momentum heading heavily into RF. Thames barely moved to catch the ball.

He also botched a relatively easy grounder before that.

With all the attempts every player is going have the easy misses. And Arcia doesn't make many of them.

But not many SSs can make the great plays that we are talking about here.

That's what always gets me about him. Watching him, even during warm ups, every single throw as at the numbers.

I was pretty ho-hum about Arcia's glove early on. He made the routine plays, but I questioned his range.

Maybe he hadn't really been tested. But lately, he has been nothing short of amazing.

His bat isn't there yet, but his defense reminds me of Rafael Furcal.
