The 2018 MLB Draft Thread

Mayo's newest Mock Draft is below.

https://www.mlb.com/news/high-school-pitchers-rise-in-mlb-mock-draft/c-277173920?tid=151437456

Has the Brewers taking Parker Meadows, OF, Grayson (Ga.) HS. Also had Schnell going 26th with the following note...

25. D-backs: Nick Schnell, OF, Roncalli HS (Ind.)

Schnell has some serious helium, with teams pouring into Indianapolis over the past few days. His name has been coming up all over the first round, and the D-backs were in heavy to see him recently.

You may once again nail a Brewers pick.

I find it generally amazing how draft projections always have us taking an outfielder. "well they've done it the last few years, they'll probably just pick another outfielder". I haven't looked too heavily, are we actually being linked to any of these OF prospects or is it as simple as looking at our recent draft history?

Jacob Campbell - Catcher - Janesville Craig

Anybody know anything about Campbell? I was talking with a colleague today who attends some of the high school games in the Janesville area when he gets a chance (all sports). He said that MLB scouts were frequently at Janesville Craig games this year as they apparently have multiple players with Division 1 offers. A couple different scouts said that Campbell "will be drafted higher than most people think." All I know about Campbell is that he's supposed to have good upside as a defensive catcher and is an Illinois commit. Anyone have any commentary about him and approximate round he is expected to go?

This year’s draft strikes me as still being fluid at the top and very strong in the #15-50 range. I do wish the Brewers had a higher second pick. As it is the #60 and #73 selections will still be plenty important.

I don’t think he is likely to fall to one of those picks for the Brewers, but I am a believer in RHP Blaine Knight from the University of Arkansas.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Perfect Game has a new mock out this morning.

https://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=15237

This mock has the brewers taking...

21. Milwaukee Brewers | Grayson Rodriguez, RHP, Central Heights HS (Texas)

Rodriguez may be in play even 10 or so spots higher than this pick, and it makes sense from value perspective as well a fit. He's been into the upper-90s this spring at times and has shown very good feel for his off-speed stuff, but there is the rawness to the profile.

Casey Mize has walked on 8 batter in 89 innings this year. He's struck out 124.

Pretty amazing.

In 93 innings this year Logan Gilbert has walked 20 and struck out 134. Some mocks have him available at #21, and if he is I don't see the Brewers passing on him unless they have a pre-draft deal with a guy that is $500K or so under slot.

Brewers seem to like throwing $250K at a couple of high schoolers drafted in rounds 11-19, and if they think the talent level is similar from 15-50 then I could see them going with a college bat and investing $500K in some high school arms later.

New Jim Callis Mock...

21. Brewers: Shane McClanahan, LHP, South Florida

A lefty who can hit 100 mph and mix in a plus changeup, McClanahan looked to be solidly in the 6-12 range until he started scuffling with his control and command over his last six starts. Falling this far might be a bit extreme. Milwaukee isn't wed to any particular demographic and is one of several landing spots for Larnach in the 20s.

I want Seth Beer!

Enough with the five-tool centerfielders who immediately struggle in pro ball. Put Beer at 1B and let him hit. I'm no scout, but anecdotally a guy who can put up monster numbers over three years in the ACC with a nearly 2-to-1 career BB-K is a guy to bet on.

Hiura batting third, Beer batting fourth for years to come

he was born to be a brewer, plus if they can save some pool money in the process I am all for this.

I'd guess the Brewer's pick will be OF-Trevor Larnach. All of Stearns high-profile acquisitions (first pick in draft, high-profile international free agent signings, trade for Yelich, signing of Cain) have all been bats and I don't see anything that makes me think he would deviate from that in this draft. The pick of Hiura showed that Stearns isn't limited into toolsy outfielders and that defense might actually factor somewhat lower than expected in the equation when dealing with amateurs. There was a great deal of love/hate with Grisham, but many loved his offensive upside and it's not unreasonable to think the Brewers were one of those teams and had him as the best bat available when they picked him. Very likely they saw the same thing in Ray and Hiura. So based on that, I'd simply project them to take whomever is the favorite bat is at #21 and Larnach could be that player. I'm sure there will be a lot of grumbling since Larnach is a LF/1B (although I think he plays mostly RF at Oregon State), and some of that will come from me. But in terms of the bat, Larnach seems really solid. Kyler Murray is another guy that I think the Brewers would love, but I just don't think he's a possibility because of the Oklahoma scholarship/QB position.

A lot of high school pitchers and hitters who could be there for us with high ceilings! Draft is a crapshoot but I trust our scouting department. Outside of the early college run 1-5 or 6 probably rest is completely wild. One mock had us landing McClanahan.... I'd be trilled with that! But again hard to believe he falls that far. Lefties who throw 100 with pretty solid off speed stuff even with control struggles is hard to fall that far. Coming into season he was a lock top 5 to 10. Verlander type profile

The Athletic Mock Draft is probably the worst case scenario I’ve seen in terms of the first tier of players all going before the Brewers selection. With some exceptions, it looked like it was mostly a straightforward “best player available” approach (they had a pool of 24 baseball beat writers make the selections). Still some good talent beyond 20, but there are definitely a couple of players I hope will slide down a few spots in order to be available at the Brewers selection.

The 20 players off the board before the Brewers selection were:

Casey Mize, RHP, Auburn

Joey Bart, C, Georgia Tech

Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State

Nick Madrigal, SS, Oregon State

Brady Singer, RHP, Florida

Jonathan India, 3B, Florida

Matthew Liberatore, LHP, Mountain Ridge HS (Ariz.)

Carter Stewart, RHP, Eau Gallie HS (Fla.)

Shane McClanahan, LHP, South Florida

Cole Winn, RHP, Orange Lutheran HS (Calif.)

Ryan Weathers, LHP, Lorretto HS (Tenn.)

Kumar Rocker, RHP, North Oconee HS (Ga.)

Nolan Gorman, 3B, Sandra Day O’Connor HS (Ariz.)

Trevor Larnach, OF, Oregon State

Brice Turang, SS, Santiago HS (Calif.)

Travis Swaggerty, OF, South Alabama

Jackson Kowar, RHP, Florida

Jarred Kelenic, OF, Waukesha West HS (Wis.)

Logan Gilbert, RHP, Stetson

Connor Scott, OF, Plant HS (Fla.)

The Brewers selection in the mock draft was Jordyn Adams, OF, Green Hope HS (N.C.).

Selections just following the Brewers were:

Cole Wilcox, RHP, Heritage HS (Ga.)

Triston Casas, 1B, American Heritage School (Fla.)

Steele Walker, OF, Oklahoma

Ethan Hankins, RHP, Forsyth Central HS (Ga.)

Matt McLain, IF, Beckham HS (Calif.)

Noah Naylor, C/SS, St. Joan of Arc HS (Ontario, Canada)

Mason Denaburg, RHP, Merritt Island HS (Fla.)

Ryan Rolison, LHP, Mississippi

Xavier Edwards, SS, North Broward Prep (Fla.)

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I'd love the pick. Had the injury and with Kirby taking another risk could end up bad however his upside is outrageous! Allard type risk reward guy
