For Tuesday night's game, the Sky Sox have a 22-man roster with only ten pitchers.

And that roster includes Brett Phillips as one of the 12 position players, assuming he made it to Memphis from St. Louis, which is likely.

Make that a 21-man roster with only nine pitchers as Paolo Espino gets called up to replace Brandon Woodruff (hamstring).

Final: DSL Indians/Brewers 4, DSL Pirates 3

The Brewers co-op team jumped out to an early lead, but the Pirates rallied to tie the game with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth before the Indians/Brewers walked off with a run in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-3 victory.

DSL Indians/Brewers Box Score

Second baseman Edwin Sano continued his hot start to the season, going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, pushing his on base percentage to .591 through seven games. He also stole a base, as did leadoff hitter Luis Avila, who finished the day 1-for-5 with an RBI. Catcher Bryan Torres added two more hits to raise his average to an even .400 while Rafael Brito and Jose Pena each added a base hit. Converted outfielder Melvin Mendez, making his third relief appearance of the season, worked the final two innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs, but was credited with the victory.

DSL Indians/Brewers Game Log

Hard to tell exactly what happened here, but it appears Brito scored all the way from first on a single to provide the walk-off win.

DSL Indians/Brewers Bottom of the 9th

Pitching Change: Angel Vasquez replaces Wilmer Contreras.

Rafael Brito singles on a ground ball to center fielder Rayvi Rodriguez.

Jose Pena strikes out swinging.

Luis Avila singles on a ground ball to right fielder Emison Soto. Rafael Brito scores.

Soooo about Nick Ramirez.... he has been dominant out of the pen & still hitting bombs when he has to hit. Do Brewers have something here? I'm starting to think so.

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

I like that option. Would be good to have that "toolshed" option in the pen.

BTW, Ronnie Gideon with another homer and a double. Methinks he has shaken off the slump (first time in full-season ball), and will probably stay in my top 10 ont he next ballot.

Nick Ramirez can choose for minor league free agency this fall if not added to the Brewers 40-man. Like Dustin Houle and Angel Ventura, he will have suitors.

I'll have to consider putting together the yearly potential free agent list together a little earlier this summer, should be fascinating, especially in conjunction with the separate list of players still under team control, but eligible for Rule 5.

Final: Memphis 7, Colorado Springs 4

Sky Sox Drop Series Opener

Blazek, Wren spark early offense in 7-4 loss

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox jumped out to an early lead, but the Memphis Redbirds scored four runs in their final two innings to take the series opener, 7-4, in front of 3,645 at AutoZone Park Tuesday night.

Michael Blazek helped his own cause in his first at-bat, lining a two-run, two-out single to right field to score Garrett Cooper and Ivan De Jesus, and give the Sox a 2-0 lead. One batter later, Kyle Wren grounded a single to right field to score Yadiel Rivera to increase the second-inning margin to three runs.

Blazek also turned in a solid pitching performance. The righty allowed two runs while striking out five Redbirds in five innings in his first start since taking his first loss of the season against Round Rock at Security Service Field June 7.

In his first game since his three-homer series against Iowa, Ryan Cordell gave the Sky Sox (37-25) some insurance in the top of the fifth inning, lining a single to centerfield to plate Wren for the center fielder's 42nd RBI of the season.

Colorado Springs Box Score

RHP Tristan Archer took the loss in a rare poor outing. Kyle Wren the only Sky Sox to reach base twice.

Tale has some charm, but even on super short notice (which it was), pretty sure there was a courier/delivery service of some sort in Memphis that could have "delivered" Espino to St. Louis.

(NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats)

Troy Stokes Jr. (3-3, HR, BB, SB, 4 RBI) was a one man wrecking crew in this game. His grand slam gave the Mudcats the lead for good in the 6th inning. Freddie Peralta (5 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 6 BB, 5 K) had some control issues but registered his first win of the season. Quintin Torres-Costa (3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) had one of his best performances in relief. Nate Griep (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) picked up his 13th save. Nice to see him with a clean inning against a very good hitting club.

Corey Ray was 0-3 but did draw two walks and stole his 15th base of the season. Jake Gatewood was 0-2 but drew 3 walks. Lucas Erceg was 2-4. Cooper Hummel also was 2-4.

OK, Rosiak ended his evening by explaining that minor league pitching coordinator Rick Tomlin was with the Sky Sox, so they did have pitching coach coverage.

I gotta say I'm weirdly interested in that Carmona, Abreu, Familia, Florentino quartet on the DSL team. Familia was getting a bit of hype going into last season and the other four, IIRC, were half a million or more signs this last signing period. I just don't remember the DSL squad having quite that kind of depth before.

We have seen an interesting piece or two come through the international program but it would be nice if that could become a steadier talent stream. I think we are seeing the start of a trickle with guys like Wuilder Rodriguez, Franly Mallen, Jay Feliciano, Yeraldy Martinez and Gilbert Lara showing varying levels of success/promise.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave
