Final: DSL Rays2 6, DSL Indians/Brewers 3

The Rays jumped out to an early lead in this one, then tacked on a couple of ninth inning insurance runs as they doubled up the Brewers co-op team 6-3.

DSL Indians/Brewers Box Score

Venezuelan lefty Luis Cordero got his second start of the year and saw his record drop to 0-2 after going three innings and giving up four runs, though only one was earned. On the bright side, he saw his ERA drop from 63.00 to 18.00. Walks were again a problem for Cordero, as he issued three free passes while striking out just one. 20-year-old Daniel Acosta followed with three scoreless innings of relief, not allowing a hit and striking out two. The offense managed just three hits, with Rafael Brito's double being the only extra-base hit. Shortstop Luis Avila got on base two times from the leadoff spot, going 1-for-3 with a walk.

Final: DSL Brewers 5, DSL Rojos 0

Four pitchers combined to shutout the Reds on just one hit as the Brewers blanked the Rojos 5-0.

DSL Brewers Box Score

17-year-old Brayan Salaya, one of the Brewers more exciting July 2nd additions last season when he inked for $250k, got the start in his pro debut and worked a scoreless first inning, quickly retiring the Reds in order. Freisis Adames followed Salaya to the mound and went six innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven to earn the win. 19-year-old Jose Romero made his professional debut in the eighth and walked the bases loaded, but left-hander Silvestre Berroa came on to get a strikeout to get him out of the inning, then worked a 1-2-3 ninth to record the save. Outfielder Anderson Melendez, who signed for $400k last July, had the best game of his young career, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles from the leadoff spot. Jean Carmona singled and drove in a run with a sac fly. Pablo Abreu added a hit and a walk and third baseman Victor Maria chipped in a double. Cleanup hitter Aaron Familia walked three times and scored a run.

DSL Brewers Game Log

Just turned 17 in February and already throwing 93 with a plus change per Baseball America's Ben Badler. Hopefully this will be the first of many appearances like this for Salaya.

DSL Rojos Top of the 1st

Miguel Hernandez grounds out, third baseman Victor Maria to first baseman Aaron Familia.

Axel Aleixo strikes out swinging, catcher Roberto Molina to first baseman Aaron Familia.

Reyny Reyes flies out to center fielder Pablo Abreu.

Switch-hitting 17-year-old DSL Indians/Brewers OF Bryan Dimas, one of three Golden Sombrero Award winners in Monday's DSL games (OF Jose Pena and 2B Luis Manon), has struck out in his last ten at-bats (one walk mixed in). He's 3-for-21 with 17 of his 18 outs via K (three walks).

We'll remember this post when Dimas is an MLB All-Star.

So when do we start considering Burns for top pitcher in our system? As of right now, I'm not sure he is very far behind Woodruff & I would have him over Ortiz. He is so advanced with great control of all his pitches. Right now I see him as at least a Chase Anderson type pitcher. Maybe not an Ace but very solid in rotation who can go one great runs when 100% on.

If he keeps this up, does he earn a look in September? Compete next ST for spot in rotation? Still early but exciting to see him pitch this outstanding. How did he drop to the 4th?

Diplan allows three home runs in 7-3 loss to Red Sox

Aviles was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs in the loss

Luis Aviles batting for the Carolina Mudcats. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats)

Marcos Diplan (5 2/3 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 6 K) started off the game by walking two and hitting a batter to load the bases. After two outs, former Brewer Jose Sermo ripped a double to the gap in left center scoring all three base runners. Sermo would later add a home run to end up with 4 RBIs. At that point, I gave up and went to the draft instead of finishing with this game. Conor Harber (2 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K) finished for the Mudcats. 3 of the 6 hits given up by Diplan were of the gopher ball variety.

Luis Aviles (2-4, 2B, 3B) was the highlight offensively. Lucas Erceg was 2-3 with a walk.

Burnes wouldn't be added in September as that would just be bad roster management to add a guy to the 40 man in September when he doesn't need to be added in the off season. Compete for a spot in Spring Training, maybe.

Why would you have him leapfrog Ortiz as of right now?

I had Burnes slotted as the 4th best rotation arm prospect in our system entering the season (Hader, Ortiz, Woodruff ahead of him). Mainly because I don't trust Lopez in any capacity and I see both Diplan/Ponce as potential future pen arms (plus Burnes was a legitimate 2nd rd talent). And as of today my top 4 rankings haven't changed. But when Burnes was a sophomore in college, Ortiz was dominating A ball then threw a handful of innings out of the pen in the AZFL. When Burnes was a junior, Ortiz was putting up great numbers in A+ then made the jump to AA that year showing flashes of brilliance at 20yrs old. Burnes is outstanding this year (on target to be minor league pitcher of the year) but he only has 2.5 career AA starts and is 1yr older than Ortiz, who is currently putting up a H9 of 5.9 and K9 at 8.2 with a 3.02 ERA in 11 AA starts. Ortiz's BB9 for career is lower than Burnes but this year I'm assuming Ortiz is working on controlling certain secondary pitches hence the increase in BB9 (and WHIP as a result). Performance absolutely matters but so does pure stuff (Ortiz is better), projectability (Ortiz), age (Ortiz younger) and other variables.

If Burnes continues to light up AA I could see him getting a couple AAA starts at the end of the season to get him exposure to that level heading into next year. He's not going to be a Sept call-up and he's not going to be given a chance to make the rotation in spring. He might not have any AAA experience at that point plus Guerra, Garza, Nelson, Chase, Davies, Hader, Woodruff are still sitting there next April (at this point). Burnes could make the Top 100 lists heading into next year and should be a Top 10 in the org.

Nottingham is finally having fly balls land for hits. I've brought it up a number of times, but he was 0-15 to start the year on fly balls off his bat. That's almost unheard of. You're supposed to hit the ball in the air - you can't help it if literally every single last one hit into the outfield was caught.
