Villar to DL; Brinson recalled to make MLB debut

And That
Santana might end up the best of the bunch.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Depends. If Dombrowski hasn't had enough punishment from Stearns already and comes calling saying, 'Hey Dave, we're 3.5 back of the Yanks and really want to add a big piece. We really like Domingo Santana, enough that we're willing to offer Devers', then I'd trade Santana.

Total hypothetical among thousands of different hypotheticals. Just point being that anyone is available for the right price.

Selling high is so much easier to do hypothetically than in practice. Villar was 25 this offseason and many felt he was near untouchable after last season, similarly with Zach Davies as a 24 year old this offseason. Not saying we should have traded them and both could very well bounce back still, but it goes to show how hard it is to sell high on a player. You never want to do it when they're showing so much potential and value, but that's why they return more then than if you wait until you want to trade them.

That said, the difference with Santana is that we'd be dealing from a position of strength in the organization. So if someone offers you something that reflects him being an .850+ OPS player through the remaining 4.5 years of his contract, you at least consider it. But that would have to be a heck of an offer!

Thing is the only area in the minor leagues that doesn't have significant strength is high ceiling starting pitchers in the upper minors. And no one is going to trade them, so you're going to end up with other younger OF prospects and younger IF prospects, which we have tons of already. Or you could get pitchers but younger, so of course a lot more risk and many here would say that's not enough to get back for him.

I admit I'm nowhere near the minors expert as many here so take with a grain of salt, but that would be my general look at trading a guy like Santana now. Plus Thames is older and only signed for 2 years after this, Santana seems like a prime candidate to move 1B down the line to take over there later on. Heck, maybe you'd be better off selling high on Thames.
