2017 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 6-20

If Hiura does avoid surgery I like the pick, I definitely like the idea of drafting the top college hitter available, but we'll see.

You would judge the entire pick based solely on the fact he might have tommy john? He is a positional player. If we sent him in today he should be ready to go at the start of the season or very early in the season.

Well if he does avoid surgery I like the pick, if not I feel neutral at best about it. Sitting out a long period of time could negatively effect his development.

Ok, so winning the award for being the best defensive player in the ACC means nothing and is "silly" but you can definitively say he's not that good defensively based on? Some general scouting reports?

I don't remember saying definitively, but yah...I will trust a bunch of general scouting reports over an award, easily.

You don' have to use the term "definitively" to get that context across. "You" will trust a bunch of scouting reports over an award but that doesn't mean it's fact regarding his defense. But you're saying it's fact.

Baseball America wrote an article 2.5 months ago saying "Long known primarily for his slick defense, Hairston has developed into one of Louisville’s best hitters". Is BA fabricating this notion that his defense has been his calling card? Do they not speak with scouts and other coaches?

Louisville's Head Coach in that article - "This is my 25th year (as a college coach),” McDonnell said. “I’ve had good college shortstops, I’ve had Zack Cozart. He (Hairston) does things I’ve never had a shortstop do. When you get to see him every single day, the plays he makes, I enjoy it. I smile. I try to take credit sometimes, even though I really don’t deserve the credit, but I’m going to try to take the credit because I coach the infielders.” Sure, coaches praise their players, as they should. But someone who's been around the game that long doesn't make comments like that without believing it. Cozart was also said to be arguably the top defensive college SS in his draft class according to scouts.

"He's not a big guy, necessarily, but he does play good defense. He's not tall, but he's fairly strong," said Brewers scouting director Tod Johnson. "He moves real well. He can really pick it at shortstop. We're real excited about the defensive tools."

Yeah. Sounds like he's not good at all nor deserving of his award. Hairston can stick at SS but reality is he'll play all over the IF in the minors because he's versatile and gets the job done.

He didn't say anything definitively. Read his post.

He may well have been deserving of the award. I personally don't care if he was or wasn't. What I care about is what he'll be in 3 years. My concern is that his ceiling is an average fielding shortstop or utility guy who is very unlikely to contribute offensively (in my opinion).

Seems pretty high to take a guy like that but they may have plans for that money, in which case it makes more sense.

For Hairston, the notion of him moving to second is based on a combination of lack of foot speed and a below average throwing arm. He has a quick release at shortstop, but a lot of that is negated by lack of arm strength. By PG data, Hairston threw at a peak of 82 mph on the infield as a prep, and that was before his nerve surgery on his arm last fall.

Guys who project to stay at shortstop like Walls, Downs, McConnell, and Allen all throw about 10 mph faster than that.

I'm trying to get more optimistic about Hairston, given that a few of the sites have him ranked a couple rounds higher than he was picked. History, however, is holding me back.

1. I got optimistic over Morrison given similar rankings last year even though they also didn't seem to mesh with the scouting reports.

2. I don't know if this is a true around the league, but easily the least productive subset of Day 2 and 3 draft picks for the Brewers over recent years have been 2B/SS/3B from four-year colleges. Since the 2000 draft, this group (Rounds 3 and later) has posted a combined -.7 WAR for the Brewers. Over that time, the Mount Rushmore would be Josh Prince, Eric Farris, Adam Heether and Chris Barnwell. Blake Allemand has posted 35 games of solid but not spectacular production at Double-A. He might already be in the top 10. You have to go back to 1995 to find a guy who posted a positive WAR, and you have to go back to Mark Loretta to find one who did it on more than four career at-bats (all of which came for a different team).

Hopefully Hairston breaks this trend, but I'm holding out more hope for the two pitchers drafted in the rounds immediately after him.

12 (354): @Brewers select Gahr HS CF Je'Von Ward. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/210960834/v1463801783 … #MLBDraft

Long known to area scouts in Southern California for his multiple tools, Ward jumped onto bigger radar screens with a strong performance in this year's Boras Classic. He's not a slam-dunk early-round choice, as some don't necessarily see him translating those tools into consistent production, but he's shown enough to warrant some top six round consideration. Ward's best now tool is his speed and he's been recorded with 4.1-second times out of the left-handed batter's box to first base this spring. That speed should allow him to be a threat on the bases as well as cover a ground in the outfield. He has some skills at the plate and makes hard contact when he stays behind the ball. There is a ton of raw power which shows up in BP, but not yet consistently in games. With enough arm and instincts, he has the chance to stay in center long-term, unless he fills out his 6-foot-5 frame too much, in which case he could fit a corner outfield profile from a power perspective just fine. While opinions of Ward varied, there are some who feel he's the type of player who could exceed projections. A Southern Cal commit, some see an Adam Jones body type, with production to potentially follow.

#Brewers grab OF Je'Von Ward. Nephew of NFL great Mark Carrier, son of former Notre Dame WR Reggie Ward. Super, super raw

#Brewers take Jevon Carrier-Ward; prep OF from SoCal. Tools are there, really fast hands, potential corner OF/pop profile

Je'Von Ward is another bigger name guy taken this round , good athlete with size and projection but would be a harder sign

Brewers 12th rounder Je'Von Ward is one of the younger players in the class, and he shows plus speed and raw power from the left side.

Basha High School shortstop Gage Workman, a long-limbed and very projectable 6-foot-3, is also of interest to scouts. He, too, is committed to Arizona State. Workman was originally slated to graduate in 2018 but reclassified as a 2017 draft in the fall. He’s unpolished (and projects to third base) but has big raw power projection and has already shown quite a bit. (He hit a ball out of Tempe Diablo Stadium yesterday that he didn’t really square up.) Workman is Mormon and reclassified, not just so he’d be young for his class in the upcoming draft, but because, if he doesn’t sign, he’s going to do two years of missionary work after his freshman year at ASU.

#Brewers pick Justin Bullock; NC prep RHP. Pitches in low-90's, good size, breaker and change both flash.

Nathan Rode‏ @NathanRode 2m2 minutes ago

RHP Justin Bullock has arm strength. Velo fluctuated through spring. 90-92 at times. High 80s others. Secondary needs work. #Brewers
