2017 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

A couple of very intriguing hitters drafted so far...very interesting....one would think that part of the big picture plan is to trade one or two (or three!) of the outfield surplus in the system for pitching

Main reason I love it. I like the player, but getting the "too many outfielders" crowd whining and moaning puts it over the top.

What about the "we don't have hardly any quality pitching and we can't afford quality free agent pitching so we should probably look to draft some quality pitchers and hey look arguably two of the best players available are pitchers so maybe we quit wasting top picks on a position we are already loaded at" crowd?

Im glad that you like the pick mainly because others hate it. That's very classy.

Having a plan is fine. Its just not the guy I would blow my pool on. Theres arms we should be looking at to go over slot with. Lutz is a nice prospect but IDK about the risk/reward levy'd on our pool

Brilliant selection, as I would have expected under Stearns.

For those complaining that he doesn't have a position, that's because of his elbow injury this season, which is also why we will be getting the (arguably) best hitter in the draft class at #9 for underslot. It's not because he's a DH/1B-only guy.

You take a guy who is ranked lower because of something that ultimately won't matter (his likely TJ surgery), and then use the $ to get another elite guy at our next pick.

Kudos SRB! You pretty much nailed that one

There are lots of picks left but with the pool were limited on what we can target. Were going to have to go underslot here soon (Unless we have a deal worked out with Hiura which would be surprising to save that much money) to get things done. Theres talent on the board but IDK if we have the pool money to get deals done with those guys.

You can still save money with some later picks too - take some college seniors that have no real leverage. Fairly sure we did this with Allemand recently. You wouldn't save a ton necessarily, but you could certainly get some back if you needed to.

I totally agree with the Excess of outfielders and middle infielders you know DS is going use that to bring in pitching when necessary

But if OFs are easy to come by, what demand will there be? Econ 101 - price is a function of supply and demand. If supply is really high... demand needs to be really high, otherwise price will below.

I'd think one could easily make the argument for the dearth of true power threats in the system. In the end, I'll trust that the org. has more information than I do and that they made the best decision possible.
but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

You can but the slots titrate down. It was actually Trey York and we saved only like 150K by doing it.

Its not just the signability of Lutz but the impact on the total pool

Allemand was a 5th round pick that got $50k or something really small. York was another example.
