2017 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

Sorry for my ignorance, but what does underslot mean?
Each pick has a slot value for signing bonuses. Players can cut deals with teams so they can get drafted higher. Signing for underslot leaves the team with a bigger portion of their bonus pool which allows them to spread it out more throughout the draft.

If some sites like Baseball America and Bleacher Report had him picked as high as 5th or 6th in their mock drafts, why would he agree to a lesser bonus that what his draft slot calls for?

I think that was only in the last week or two that he was picked that high in the mock drafts--and I think it was because there were rumblings about the Braves or A's cutting a deal for an underslot guy--like Hiura. I don't think many pure rating systems had him that high because of his bat-only nature.

Those sites projected he would go that high based on projected under slot deals. The highest most mocks picked him without citing a "deal" being made was around #15.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Question related to Hiura.

He played for UC-Irvine - Big West Conference. How is the competition in that conference? I really don't know much about college baseball - so I was wondering if some of Hiura's stats are padded a bit by lesser competition.

Just wondering if anyone knew.

It's a good conference. Long Beach and Cal State Fullerton are in that conference and produce major leaguers. It's not the SEC or ACC or anything but it's probably in the top 5 or 6 conferences.

Get kicked off team -> ????????? -> success!

If he has top-10 stuff somebody is going to let him pitch.

So basically what you're saying is he should transfer but somehow get around the NCAA rule of having to sit out a year while transferring and that sitting out a year will help his draft stock?

They are in the same conference as Long Beach State and UC-Fullerton, who are squaring off for the right to go to the College World Series. Cal-Poly and UC-Santa Barbara are usually no slouches either. They've also played Oregon, Houston, TCU, UCLA, and USC non-conference.

He ain't been playing lesser competition.

Romero really has no leverage, so I can't imagine he'd cost much above slot.

Can't he just go back to college, have an elite season with no off-field issues all year, and count on top-10 money as a senior? (Easier said than done, but at least he can threaten that)

This is the major question I've had with the slot system. It seems like the hard to sign guys are all HS guys who want to go to college...but most of the college guys are juniors, so couldn't they play the same game? Or are they afraid that as a senior sign the next year a team would just give them a low-ball offer well below slot?

Sure, HS players can, but there are no guarantees. Injuries, bad seasons, etc... hard to walk away from guaranteed money when its good money. Plus some kids simply don't want to go to college.

Same with college juniors. But they play the risk of having a bad year and losing money and tied to a senior sign bonus.

If he would be losing out on $4+ million and has consensus top-10 stuff and isn't injured, then yes, quite obviously he should have threatened to do that. The question here is whether he has any leverage, he obviously does/did.

It's a moot point now that he's been selected in the mid-first-round.

I'm excited about Hiura, especially if 2B is a real possibility. He's the opposite of Corey Ray, he really improved each year.

Now if they can land Sam Carlson that would be perfect. Love a hard throwing HS pitcher with a legit change up.

Anyone know if Carlson was a tough sign? Didn't know if his demands were too rich for middle/late round picks, but perhaps he's a target for one of the upcoming teams who have big dollar pools. Just curious if anyone has heard anything.

No info but a Florida commitment and with Minnesota's bonus pool, I would assume he has floated out some numbers that are scaring off teams.
