2017 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

For people that don't like the Weeks comparison for Hiura, don't worry, he's nothing like Weeks :).

Offensively he reminds me of Weeks coming out of college defensively I have no idea what he will be.

Good grief. We complain about high upside pitching and then complain when they go after it.

Not difficult to be worried about someone who can never/ever repeat a delivery.

Do you have something that indicates he can't never/ever repeat a delivery?

I like that they went pitcher with the 3rd selection and I can certainly appreciate cathedral ceilings, but it seems like the Brewers have a significant long-term development project on their hands with Lemons, which isn't something the organization has excelled at. Just thought there were high school (and college) hurlers still available with high enough ceilings and a better probability to fulfill their potential. I will be happy to be wrong when Lemons turns into a front of the rotation stud.

Which ones were you considering? Are any still left on the board. It seems Lemons has considerable upside. Non of us knows what he becomes but he certainly has the upside.

At this point in the draft I don't think a few dozen rank spots make that much difference. Teams are looking at players, and different teams are seeing different things. I assume, unless we find out otherwise, that this is just where the Brewers had Lemons on their board.

All that matters with any of these picks and regardless of position is that they pan out into good players.

More of these guys in the first two rounds will end up being busts than quality big league players. Hell, many won't even play a single game in the majors, especially among the pitchers who have to both avoid injury and pitch well enough in the minors to eventually get called up. Toughest of the major pro sports to draft.

I would bet on winning the lotto tomorrow for myself over Lemons repeating a delivery through any game started. He has projectability but is a definitely a project.

I'm going to put trust into our area Scouts, cross checkers, and overall scouting department who has followed this kid extremely closely. It's clear the Brewers see something in him they really like. I have liked the talent the Brewers scouting department on both the amateur & pro sides. I have liked everything Tod Johnson has said about his approach. Ray Montgomery is still involved, I read DS has made rounds to see different prospects. Now let's see what our developing team can do.

I'm no professional scout but seems like a high upside guy. I'll let Lemons get to work in Arizona before I put out absurd winning a lottery over an 18 year old learning repeat mechanics. Wasn't the sexiest pick because of risk & not being a guy talked a lot around here but I don't mind it. Excited to see what he has in a couple of weeks.

Well when you draft college age hitters with great HS pitchers available and wait til 3rd pick to get the upside. Tall, lanky pitchers flame out the most for starting. Id be better off with the pick if another SP were selected before him. This being potentially the best arm you draft in potential is less pleasing. In case anyone hadnt noticed, developing wild pitchers to better control isn't the minors strong suit. Nevermind he needs a 3rd/4th pitch to learn.

To Homer, yes every pitcher is a bust potential. Im commenting regarding to height. 6'6 and above bust more often than shorter pitchers due to mechanics and repeating delivery at such size.

I've not seen anything that says he doesn't/can't repeat his mechanics. We do have a report saying he already has two decent secondary offerings....in case you hadn't noticed.

I'm not going to pretend I know much about these college and HS players. I have scouting reports and lists to view, plus discussion boards like this one, to learn about the players. At times, I have had players I've read about and locked on and said, "Hey, that's my guy," but in the end, my knowledge is pretty limited. Therefore, I don't really have a lot of skin in the game about our picks. I don't get freaked out when we pick Player A or don't pick Player B. I just have to assume the team is doing their job. Of course, those in charge have to be held accountable in the long run. I just hope we do well in the end and we get some quality players from the draft.

Love the Tristian Lutz pick! I in no way see there being any signability issue with him. I don't even think they will need to go overslot to high. Teams know the numbers before hand. They know the signability risk. Most of the time they are on phone with these guys prior to picking them to check their price. Brewers have great history in getting guys signed. Covey doesn't count due to the situation.

Seems to me he is a very sound baseball player with a ton of upside. If people are worried about the depth at OF, that all works itself out. Buy lottery tickets, find you winners & aquire more talent with the leftovers.

So now that the picks are over for today...anyone I should hope for tomorrow? Seen some people wanting to take a shot with Tristan Beck, looks like he could maybe be there for our pick.

Anyone else? Anyone sitting there that one of you really want??

Granted I don't know about the signability so this is just a list in a vacuum, but here are pitchers I would have liked a little better...

Sam Carlson, Tristan Beck (college guy), Alex Scherff, Corbin Martin (college guy), Jacob Heatherly, Hagen Danner (RHP, but also a catcher), and Hans Crouse

Most of those guys appear to have a better feel for pitching, but I am also not a scout so take it for what it's worth... basically nothing :)

Enlow and Heatherly come into mind.

I didn't ask as a means of comparison. I just thought maybe some of those guys would still be available and along with Enlow and Stephens, it looks like Heatherly, Beck, and Scherff are still available at least. Maybe one to two of those picks make it through the first eight picks tomorrow?
