Overlooked Stats

rickh150
Quick stat question that popped into my head after reading that about Shaw, if it's a double steal does the guy going from 1 to 2nd also get credit for it? I'm pretty sure he does but though someone would know for sure. And if so, I'd be curious if a few of Shaw's were that fashion.

As long as the other runner is safe, it's a SB. If one of the runners is caught then the other runner advances on the throw. I don't know about Shaw but Villar is the only guy who hits in front of him that would be stealing 3B, and he's hardly gotten on this year, so I doubt that any of those steals were on double steals.

Yea that's what I thought. Perez has hit 3rd a lot too, but yea probably just one or two at most in that situation, if any. I guess I thought of it because off the top of my head I just don't remember him straight up stealing 2nd, and I watch a lot of the games. Of course not all and am not always paying full attention when I do, but I'd expect to have it pop in my head a bit.

ETA: being only 7 it was easy to find them. Looks like he's a 3rd base specialist. 6 of his 7 have been of 3rd base. One of 2nd and it appears to be a normal by himself steal. My best guess is that 2 of the 6 steals of 3rd also had someone stealing 2nd with him. So, no he hasn't benefited from this rule, just that he gets ignored on 2B and takes advantage of it.

Here is something to chew on. Travis Shaw has not been on the back end of a double steal however he has been on the FRONT END of two. 5/10 against the Red Sox with Santana taking 2nd (Shaw scored on a throwing error by the catcher on this play) and 6/15 against the Cardinals with Perez trailing him. Of his 7 steals – 5 are of 3rd base (!). I have no evidence to back this up but my assumption is that teams are letting their guard down with Shaw on 2nd and he is catching them napping/underestimating him. Good on him. Makes me like him better. Heads up baserunning.

FYI, Villar has been on the front end of a double steal twice this year. Braun (1) and Thames (2) were given the ‘back end’ steal on those two respective plays.

*post edit* Saw you responded to yourself already while I was doing my own research. Good work :)

My count had it 6 of 7 looking at boxscores, maybe I mixed up though, who knows.

Remember Carlos Lee's stealing game? Fully took advantage of being ignored. And of course he'd be laughing and giggling afterwards.

I wonder how many, if any, of his steals are of the other double steal variety: 1st and 3rd, 2 out, runner on first breaks to try to induce a rundown. I've noticed a few of these lately where the other team doesn't bite on it and just concedes 2nd base, but I cannot remember if any were Shaw.

No we just went through and at least 5, and I think 6 of 7 were steals of 3rd. so only leaves one time going to second. I guess the box scores along don't show if a guy was on 3rd or not, but at most it would be one.

Where have I heard buy low sell high before?

The stock market. With stocks, a stock has no real ongoing value to you until you sell it (the few that pay out a bit of dividends notwithstanding). With a player, you are getting value from their play on an ongoing basis, so the situation is significantly different.

That was who I thought of right away when reading about Shaw's stealing. Good base stealers aren't always the ones who steal the most bases. Some just have a knack for when to steal them.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.
