Sometimes the sun shines on every dog for a day!

Happy for Scooter!

Wonder if he's the shortest player to every accomplish it as well.

I was curious, so I looked it up. Baseball-reference lists him at 5'10", which I feel is being a bit generous..... but that's what he's listed as.

That would tie him for the shortest to ever accomplish the feat with Willie Mays and Bobby Lowe.

Might be the best offensive game in history. Could make that argument anyway.

Since Scooter was close to a HR cycle, I would like to point out this interesting and shameful game featuring Tino Martinez

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA199704020.shtml

His first 3 ABs go 3 run HR, 2 run HR then solo through 5 innings. Then, next AB he comes to the plate with the bases loaded, a HR cycle opportunity, he grounds out to the pitcher. Unlikely to have another chance so a little nibbler is a major disappointment. But wait, in the 9th inning he comes to the plate with the bases loaded again. 2 HR cycle chances in the same game...and he walks on a full count. Score was 9-2 in the 9th at that time, no reason to walk there. You have to just commit to swinging at the last pitch.

...and then the baseball gods themselves decided to mess with me by letting the Yankees rally and have Tino come up again in the 9th with the bases loaded, that's right folks, 3 HR cycle opportunities in the same game and 2 in the same inning!

This time, in likely the least clutch AB in MLB history, he strikes out looking.

There has never been a HR cycle, I think not even in the minors and there may have been 1 recorded in some independent league or college.

I was at the Brewers/Expos game when Jenkins had 3 homers (2002?) and he came up for his 4th at bat with the bases loaded and a chance to hit for the homerun cycle. Unfortunately he struck out in that last at bat. Exciting nonethe less.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know where to look up how much WAR he produced yesterday? I was astounded how much Thames produced, in terms of WAR over the first month. He pretty much made up for his contract in one month.

Was that a $10M day for Scooter, in terms of salary per WAR?

MLB better ask for blood and urine to be consistent

That was my immediate thought as well. Scooter?

To be fair, Thames is tested so often because of a rule that players who are out of the majors or minors for a certain amount of time are subject to more testing. Baseball has no such rule for little people.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Just spitballing, but I"d guess no where close.

Fangraphs now has him at .8 WAR, and Bbref now has him at 1.2 WAR (and IIRC, he was about .7 WAR late last week)

Even a huge game like this is probably going to produce like .3 to .4 WAR. Remember, RBI is a teammate dependent stat, so that gets tossed right out.

Well Scooter drove himself in 4 times so that should count for something!

He should have just admitted that he was trying to hit a home run his last AB.

I mean the entire crowd was cheering for him too, of course he was trying to.

No shame in that.

Especially since he delivered!

Interested in opinions of this, as I always thought of Scooter as someone who maximized his lesser talents. Went and looked up his Perfect Game scouting reports when he was a Senior in High School:

"2008 National Showcase Jun 13, 2008

PG Grade: 10

Ryan "Scooter" Gennett is a 2009 MIF/OF with a 5'10'', 170 lb. frame from Sarasota, FL who attends Sarasota HS. Gennett is an extremely athletic infielder with excellent infield actions. His hands and feet work very well and he has easy plus arm strength and was gunned in the low 90's across the diamond. He has excellent bat speed at the plate with plus extension in his swing. He has serious pull power and can also drive the ball to the opposite field. He has strength in his swing and the ball explodes off his bat. Gennett can also really run (6.57 60) and is a very exciting player to watch on the field. A true 5 tool prospect. He has made a verbal commitment to Florida State. Aflac All American"

a 5 Tool Athlete? Is that relative to other High Schoolers? Plus arm strength? 6.57 sixty speed and just 14 SB's in his MLB career? Say what?

I've always thought Scooter to be more athletic and had a stronger arm than he was given credit for and pound, for pound he generates a lot of bat speed. I saw, that in the on deck circle doing practice swings as a rookie.

Well (ignoring defense) we can approx the runs he created using linear weights.

Right now MLB is a 4.56 runs/game scoring environment, so halway between 4 and 5 for the above charts gives singles worth .468 runs and HR worth 1.395 runs.

He was 5-5 with a 1B and 4 HR, so that would be (1).468 + (4)1.395 = 6.048 runs created.

We then need to convert that to wins using this approximation.

9 * (7918 MLB runs/15482 MLB innings) *1.5 + 3 = 9.9, so last night (again excluding defense and position) Scooter produced

6.048/9.9 = .61 WAR
