Gatewood delivers walk-off single in 8-7 victory

The Mudcats scored four late runs in their 8-7 walk-off win

By Carolina Mudcats | June 4, 2017 7:14 PM ET

30 hits in this game, 16 from the Mudcats. The Mudcats scored 3 runs in the 8th to tie the game before finishing the game off in the 9th. Cody Ponce (4 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 92 pitches, 64 for strikes) started and the box score looks worse than his actual performance. The Dash had several cheap hits in there and some plays the defense didn't make for him. Quintin Torres-Costa (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K) followed Ponce with a strong outing. Eric Hanhold (2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) finished off the game and took the win.

Corey Ray had a golden sombrero and looked very uncomfortable at the plate today for some reason. He did get a hit in his last at bat that blooped in over the 3rd baseman. Jake Gatewood (3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, game winning hit) led the offense. As mentioned, Lucas Erceg was 4-5 with a double and 3 RBIs. Interestingly, the double was a cue job down the 3rd base line whereas earlier in the game, he hit a screamer off the right field wall and was held to a single. Trent Clark (2-3, 2 BB) was on base 4 times including a bunt single. Cooper Hummel and Weston Wilson chipped in with 2 hits each.

Final: Colorado Springs 3, Oklahoma City 1

Sky Sox Take Three Of Four In 3-1 Win

Colorado Springs finishes 6-2 in Oklahoma City in 2017

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox won its second series of the season at Oklahoma City, defeating the Dodgers, 3-1, to take three of four games in front of 6,486 Sunday afternoon at Chicaksaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Tyler Heineman broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning, driving his 10th double of the season to centerfield to score Nate Orf. The catcher's seventh RBI of the season was his first run driven in since May 22 in Albuquerque.

See via the rest of the recap at the link above how seven Sky Sox pitchers were used...

Colorado Springs Box Score

19 of the 25 Sky Sox saw action today; Brewers will say they are limiting Josh Hader's innings, but it's easy to envision a scenario where he becomes a big league relief cog fairly soon, and the organization can certainly spin things to say Hader will be stretched out again in 2018's spring training...

Agreed that they are likely grooming Hader for the pen, no matter what they are saying .

Day off for Brett Phillips on a day when 19 saw action - we could run wild with that one, couldn't we?

The ten-day big league DL seems made to order for Matt Garza to miss exactly one start. Brewers could call up an extra bench bat for the first three games of the SF series, then swap the bench guy for Paulo Espino on Thursday.

EDIT: Yikes, Phillips is listed as the CF, bad on me!

The Brewers are planning on getting Josh Hader into the bullpen this year and probably sooner rather than later. No way they are just limitting innings in June already. If he already needs his innings limitted he isn't future starter material. He isn't coming off injury so you would want to increase his innings from last year yet they are doing the opposite.

Bummer. He could still get the call, though. The theory is sound, if they need to DL Garza it doesn't make sense to bring up Espino tomorrow.
