From the today's Carolina Mudcats Game Notes...

Corey Ray has hit safely in eight of his last nine games and is batting .429/.462/.686 with a 1.147 OPS since 5/16 (15 H, 7 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 3 BB, 8 SO, 20.5 K%).

It's nice to see a hot streak for Ray as well as that K rate trending down slightly even if it's a small sample size. Still a 28.0 K% on the season.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Pelicans run away with 8-2 win versus Mudcats

Troy Stokes Jr. hit a two-run HR for the Mudcats in Saturday's loss

(NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats)

Conor Harber threw 9 straight balls to start this game. Eventually, he walked 3 men, all of whom scored, in the first inning and that is all the Pelicans would need to win this game. 3 relievers followed but the Mudcats were never able to come back. Troy Stokes Jr. hit a 2 run home run for the only 2 runs of the game for the Mudcats. Jake Gatewood broke up a perfect game with a single to lead off the 5th.

The Mudcats now have an identical 26-23 record as the parent club. One feels better than the other however.

Final: Tennessee 6, Biloxi 5

Shuckers lose heartbreaker in ninth to Smokies

Jason Vosler's walk-off double hands Shuckers a fifth straight loss

KODAK, TN - The Biloxi Shuckers dropped their fifth straight game Saturday in heartbreaking fashion, losing 6-5 to the Tennessee Smokies on a walk-off double in the ninth inning. It marks the second time this series the Shuckers have been walked off after not experiencing such a loss through the season's first 46 games.

Rest of the recap at the link above...

Biloxi Box Score

This one hurt.

21-year-old Luis Ortiz has worked between four and five innings pitched in each of his nine starts this season. Much of that may be by design by the Brewers, but even in his scoreless five-inning effort three starts ago, he threw 88 pitches. His last two lines look remarkably similar, which isn't a good thing.

Biloxi Game Log

Teams combined for 15 walks and two HBP...

Game Suspended: Nashville 5, Colorado Springs 0, still in the first inning

They jammed a lot into 30 minutes of game time here.

As noted above, Hiram Burgos exited nearly immediately. Much more happened, here's the game log to make it easy on us.

Col. Springs Top of the 1st

Kyle Wren called out on strikes.

Ivan De Jesus Jr. singles on a line drive to center fielder Ryan LaMarre.

With Ryan Cordell batting, Daniel Gossett picks off Ivan De Jesus Jr. at 1st on throw to Matt Olson.

Ryan Cordell strikes out swinging.

Nashville Bottom of the 1st

Colorado Springs Sky Sox Manager Rick Sweet ejected by 1B umpire Clay Park.

Jaycob Brugman singles on a ground ball to shortstop Ivan De Jesus Jr.

Pitching Change: Tristan Archer replaces Hiram Burgos.

Franklin Barreto grounds into a force out, shortstop Ivan De Jesus Jr. to second baseman Nate Orf. Jaycob Brugman out at 2nd. Franklin Barreto to 1st.

Matt Olson singles on a ground ball to left fielder Kyle Wren. Franklin Barreto to 2nd.

Renato Nunez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brett Phillips. Franklin Barreto scores. Matt Olson to 2nd.

Joey Wendle singles on a fly ball to center fielder Brett Phillips. Matt Olson to 3rd. Renato Nunez to 2nd.

Matt Chapman called out on strikes.

Jaff Decker singles on a line drive to center fielder Brett Phillips. Matt Olson scores. Renato Nunez scores. Joey Wendle to 3rd. Jaff Decker to 2nd. Throwing error by center fielder Brett Phillips.

Matt McBride hits a ground-rule double (5) on a line drive to left field. Joey Wendle scores. Jaff Decker scores.

No word on what Rick Sweet was arguing about, the pickoff, maybe?

If Burgos is going to be out, that opens a starting spot for one of the now-six starters in Biloxi to move up. Maybe Aaron Wilkerson gives the PCL another try, he's slated to start Sunday for Biloxi. The Sky Sox' Michael Blazek remains a 6th starter / swingman option as well.

And the first inning isn't even over yet, two outs only.

What could have been avoided if the game had never been started - apparent injury, ejection, big deficit, the need to play at least 16 innings on Tuesday.

At least Colorado Springs has Wednesday off as they make their way from Nashville to Oklahoma City.
