Bickford back in a week?

MILB.com shows he's on Carolina's roster currently. They have completed 43 games. He was suspended for 50. Does this definitely mean he will be back? Has anyone heard anything? Am I looking at this the right way?

Thanks

This seems to be one of those exceptionally rare years in which the Brewers young talented arms takes a collective step. Guys go from the bottom of our top 20-30 lists to top 100 prospects, top 100 guys make big impacts at the big league levels...

We've always had talented arms....but it's been a long time since we've had several young arms actually out-perform out expectations or even realistic hopes for what they could or would do. Bickford's the obvious exception. It'd be great to see him get on the mound and then get some run in the fall and see if he can become a solid late inning high leverage reliever for us in the near future.

I think you need to wear out the idea of Bickford as a starter completely before you convert him to a pen role. He's got the stuff and the pedigree to be a successful starter. Plus, a young starting pitcher is always going to have more value as a trade chip than a reliever. Even an average minor league starter is going to have more value than a lights-out minor league reliever. That's what's make the conversion of Jorge Lopez a little bit of a buzzkill. But Bickford is still very very young, and has hasn't thrown many pitches in the Milwaukee system yet. If he can come up in the 2019/2020 range and be an effective high-leverage reliever, great! I want him starting until then.

Bickford has easily been the most enigmatic Brewers prospect I can remember.

Obviously two different people and personalities with different problems, but Zach Braddock is the last sort-of-comparable that I can come up with. Have to give Zach credit as he did get to the majors. It's too bad it didn't last long because he seemed to have some real top-end talent.

Always a sad thing when a high prospect can't get out of their own way. Happens a lot to people.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Braddock ended up living out of his car. I think there was some mental health issues going on with him, which is tough as he had the talent to be a big leaguer.

I saw Bickford pitch in Sprint Training this year and he looked completely lost. I think the one stretch of an intersquad game I saw he went walk, walk, 3 run HR, walk, HBP. Coaches seemed really down on him, especially his mental fortitude.

Sad - hope he gets it figured out.

The Zack Braddock reference reminded me how high I was on him. Fireballing lefty as I recall - kind of a "Josh Hader - lite." Rocketed up the minors - pitched in the bigs briefly and then disappeared. The storyline was something about "not being able to sleep" and "always late," but the underlying issue was obviously something greater. They didn't send him down to figure it out - he just disappeared.

Under the same subject of disappearing, it reminds me of the incredible situation with Angel Salome.

Angel Salome, Nicky Delmonico, Zak Braddock.....there have been a few over the years.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

A good Bickford update!

Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) Tweeted:

Club official confirms @BrewersFarm --

RHP Trey Supak (No. 21 on @MLBPipeline's Brewers prospect list) is being promoted to Biloxi and RHP Phil Bickford will be activated to take Supak's spot at Carolina.

I thought Braddock had a diagnosed mental issue that he and or the Brewers were fairly open about. Perhaps I'm mis-informed, but I thought he was bi-polar? Which frankly gets tossed around so much by people now that I no longer know what it really means(I'm only half serious). But we all seem to forget that these guys have real lives beyond the club their pitching for and things they have to deal with. Bickford is still young. I really hope he can get it together. It was sad seeing Salome, Braddock and Delmonico(sp?) not reach their potential. The first two I was certain would be impact players. Salome had the tools of a poor mans Ivan Rodriquez and Braddock was a power lefty who racked up the K's.

Hope he gets his life together and baseball will come after.

See 2 posts above yours.

That's awesome news. I didn't see your post when I made mine. That's great news. Hopefully he'll be one of our feel good stories this year and by the end of the season, we're talking about him as a candidate to get called up at some point next year. Gotta imagine a lot of rust on that arm.
