MUST-SEE MOVIES

Judging by the tv thread, there are a bunch of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fans on the site. I'd recommend that you check out Nobody when it hits your price point. Odenkirk is a surprisingly compelling action hero, and he elevates the material, which is at least partly about responding to emasculation. It's kind of the dark comedy version of A History of Violence with more than a dash of John Wick.

Nobody was excellent. Went to the theater for the first time in over a year and I’m glad I did.

Went to see a movie a few weeks ago...just to get out of the house. Nobody was in the preview - wife looked at me and said, 'that probably would have been fun to watch.' I was surprised she said that. Bummed me out because I did want to see it but didn't think she would enjoy it.

Fast forward to today. I look to see if Nobody is playing this weekend in Sun Prairie - it isn't. Ugh.

All I can think of when reading these posts is, "Your Nobody called today... She hung up when I asked her name. Well, I wonder if she thinks she's being clever? Oooo Oooo"

80's gold!

Sittin' in a restaurant she walked by

I seem to recall that certain look in your eye

I said "who's that?" You said with a smile

"Oh it's nobody, oh nobody"

Maybe that explains the last two week

You called me up, dead on your feet

Working late again, I ask who with

You said "nobody, oh nobody."

Well your nobody called today

She hung up when I asked her name

Well I wonder does she think she's being clever?

(Clever)

You say nobody's after you

The fact is what you say is true

But I can love you like nobody can, even better

Late last night we went for a drive

You were miles away I asked "who's on your mind?"

You said, "Nobody, nobody. Why do you ask?"

Oh, her again I could have told you that.

We came back home got ready for bed

I said to myself I've got one shot left

Your still mine and I won't stand in line

Behind nobody, nobody!

Well your nobody called today

She hung up when I asked her name

Well I wonder does she think she's being clever?

(Clever)

You say nobody's after you

The fact is what you say is true

But I can love you like nobody can, even better.

I believe you can rent it at home for like $20. Not the same as a theater but these days it's nice just to have something of quality to watch.

With the Oscars this weekend, I'm wondering if anyone else likes to watch the best picture contenders. I've only gotten through about half of them this year and haven't seen the favorite (Nomadland) yet. Out of what I've seen I thought Promising Young Woman was the best and Daniel Kaluuya's performance in Judas and the Black Messiah was phenomenal.

I did see that, but I don't want to drop 20 when it's basically the same price as the theater. At least with a theater we might grab some snacks(the wife anyway) or some different dinner before hand. Typically our moving going experiences is our date night. Dinner, movie, drinks, etc. Thats half the fun!

We try to watch them all each year as well. Big fan of The Father thus far, though Kaluuya was very, very good in Judas, which was enjoyable. Minari was your typical well-done Oscar-type movie that may win a bunch of awards, but I didn't think it was exceptional.

I had the same reaction to Minari...good movie but not an award winner. Enjoyed the supporting roles the most--the grandma and kids in particular.

Hopper, lets not drag politics into the movie thread please.

I've seen all but Minari and The Father and will probably try to catch at least one of those two before the Oscars.

Of the nominees I've seen, I liked Nomadland the best. And Mank the least. But I don't have too strong a feeling if someone pulls an upset on Nomadland.

I think this is a fairly typical set of nominations for a year when there's not a blockbuster contender. And I think the year was always destined to be that way as I have doubts about West Side Story. And Dune is likely too esoteric. I don't think any of the comic book movies or Bond was an awards contender. I suppose In the Heights may be. But, I think this was always going to be a year that resembled the Independent Spirit Awards.

What disappointed me most was how conservative the Academy was in a year when all the usual rules were out the window. Why not the last theatrical hit, The Invisible Man? Or a clever funny film like Palm Springs? Or one of the drive in hits like The Vast of Night? The Oscar industrial complex just kept grinding away with no regard to the world around it.

I guess we're mostly through what there is of the summer movie season, cut down by the Delta variant. And a string of movies that weren't that compelling.

The Green Knight I thought was really terrific. If you're in English lit mode rather than action adventure mode. It's certainly deliberately paced, but gorgeous, well acted, and has a lot on its mind. I was only vaguely aware of the poem, but it makes me want to read it.

I thought The Suicide Squad was a lot of fun. Perhaps a little too much reliance on swearing and shocking kills, but likable characters, a weird big bad, and just enough social/political commentary to engage with.

Black Widow I thought was good, but clearly a lesser version of Winter Soldier with the main character kind of sidelined in favor of the new characters coming up. This also feels a few years too late. I enjoyed it, but it's definitely mid-tier Marvel.

Luca deserved a theatrical release.

I really enjoyed In the Heights, but I'd agree with the criticism that it's too long.

Summer of Soul and The Sparks Brothers were super musical documentaries. Highly recommended.

I'll second Summer of Soul. Shocking how good the acts were at that festival.

A few from the as of late...

The Man Who Fell to Earth. David Bowie plays an enigmatic billionnaire building a personal spacecraft to return to his home planet. A little too on the nose being on Amazon Prime, like come on Bezos, just come out & say it.

Mirror. Stalker is one of my all time favourites, so had to check out this other Tarkovsky that recently got the Criterion treatment & it did not dissapoint. Beautifuuly shot poetic ruminations on time, love, family, everything really.

Minding The Gap. Documentary that is ostensibly about three skateboarders in Rockford, but uses that as a jumping off point to examine race, cycles of abuse & what people are willing to risk or relinquish in their lives to chase those ever elusive moments that actually let you know, you are in fact, alive.

Definitely agree. It felt more like a movie to introduce a new character as opposed to a Black Widow story which I would have been on board for especially 5 years ago. I would have much rather preferred a Black Widow Origin story but, I can see how it would not make sense now.

Honestly kind of burned out on Marvel now. Add in less well known characters, easy access to streaming, and the pandemic and I am not sure how many more I will see in the theater. Might change my mind if X-Men and Fantastic Four are introduced back in.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

My main concern with the MCU now is that I am completely lost and don't know how or have the time to get caught back up. So now Loki and Vision are alive, John Snow is part of a group where he is pretty much still just John Snow while the rest of the group can fly, teleport, and change matter...and there is a cartoon where everything is reimagined? Do I have any of that right?

So now Loki and Vision are alive, John Snow is part of a group where he is pretty much still just John Snow while the rest of the group can fly, teleport, and change matter...and there is a cartoon where everything is reimagined? Do I have any of that right?

Mostly...

SPOILERS

- The Vision has been re-built, but lacks the emotional attachment to his memories / relationship with the Scarlet Witch. (Something similar happened in the comics awhile ago.)

- "Our" Loki (the one from the MCU) still died in Avengers: Infinity War. A variant of that same character escaped with the Tesseract / Cosmic Cube during Endgame, and is the Loki that is still running around in the MCU....which is now seemingly under the control of a different Kang variant, causing a whole lot of multi-verse issues for the next batch of films.

- The comics version of the Black Knight (Kit Harrington's character in Eternals) doesn't have powers directly, but his sword allows him to be resurrected if he dies while holding it. No telling if any part of that makes it into the film. He's not actually one of the Eternals, though. So far as I can tell, he shows up because he and one of the Eternals (Sersi) had a thing in the 90's Avengers book....which I hope gets adapted differently than it was back then.

- The What If series is showing us different variations allowable by the multiverse (like Into the Spider-Verse did for Spider-Man, but with much more limited licensing rights). After Loki, it's hard to say whether any of it is particularly important, or just Easter eggs all the way down. Still fun, though.

- Falcon is Captain America now.

- A potentially more fun version of Hawkeye is coming to Disney+ in November.

- Though Marvel hasn't said so explicitly, they seem to be laying all the groundwork for a "Young Avengers" spin-off.

Disney+ will give you access to everything (which is great for the nerds like me who grew up with the Marvel characters back when only DC Comics characters got movies). The films should bring you up to speed on as much or as little as you need to know.
