In honor of former Brewer and cinephile, John Axford, I thought I would start a general thread of "Must-see" Movies.

This one somehow wasn't a box office hit and is already available for streaming on Netflix.

 

Here's my take on it...

An inspiring, charming romp of a movie, SING STREET shows us how the optimistic, passionate, romanticism of youth has the power to drown out of all the negativity, insecurity and doubt that life can dish out, and turn it into beautiful music. Pure movie magic and my favorite film so far this century.

 

A must-see for anyone who loves music or the 1980s. And it's NOT a musical BTW. LA LA LAND couldn't hold this movie's jock strap.

 

Would love to hear others thoughts on this hidden gem as well as their "must-see" recommendations.

Its hard to fathom Sylvester Stallone in a must see movie, but if you like corny comedy and haven't seen "Oscar" you are missing a hilarious movie.

 

Or if you can stand a bit of Shakespeare, "Much Ado about Nothing" is a great date movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was great, especially in 3D.

 

Is this a lifetime list or just current? Because Good Fellas is absolutely a must see.

Swing and a Drive, watched that movie last night and really enjoyed it. As I was watching I was thinking that it kind of reminded me of "That Thing You Do" and another movie that I can't think of the name now. Again, thanks for the recommendation, not a movie I would have normally clicked on when browsing.

 

In regards to "must sees", I have a long list of them and would agree with Bikeage that "Good Fellas" would be on that list, but I would hope most people have seen that one. Although, some of my co-workers are 20-25 years younger than me and I sometimes have a hard time believing some of the movies they have not seen (Back to the Future, Ghostbusters - the original, Blues Brothers, etc). I want to ask them what is wrong with their parents. How did they never introduce you to these classics?

 

Anyways, as far as possible "hidden gem" must sees, one that comes to mind is "The Pope of Greenwich Village". Most others I can think of are comedies like some of the early John Cusack films like "The Sure Thing" and "Better Off Dead". Now that I think of it, "Martian Child" , also with John Cusack, is not a well known film that I thought was decent.

 

"Night Shift" with Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton (directed by Ron Howard) is another not widely known comedy I always enjoyed. I know there is more, but having trouble thinking of them now.

 

I use the phrase "hidden gem" loosely in the films I'm mentioning, especially the comedies which would possibly come of as a bit dated and campy to a younger viewer and they are not as critically acclaimed as Sing Street. Most of these I first saw when I was much younger and they were simple, silly, and fun and I would definitely watch them again if they popped up on cable somewhere...but they hardly ever do.

Yes, I should've used "hidden gems" instead of must-see for the two I mentioned. I was thinking of rarely heard movies that were good based on the OP.

Dunkirk is one movie other than star wars and the new alien movie that are on my must see list this year.

You definitely need to check out SING STREET. It's written and directed by the same person who did BEGIN AGAIN.... John Carney.

Kelly's Heroes is always a must watch for me.

 

The new Alien movie was disappointing definitely not a must see especially if you are an Alien fan.

Trapped in Paradise... Nicolas Cage, Dana Carvey, Jon Lovitz. One of my favorite Christmas comedies. They rob a bank and get trapped by a snowstorm in the same town.

I watched Sing Street after seeing this thread. I thought it was next to awful. The music was solid and the big brother had some good lines but the rest of it was insanely boring. La La Land absolutely destroys this movie. Someone above mentioned That Thing You Do - good movie.

 

Hidden gems - The Hollywood Knights, High Fidelity, Super Troopers, Adventures in Babysitting (87), The Monster Squad, Dazed and Confused, Garden State, Stir of Echoes. There's so many.

 

Documentaries usually get overlooked by people in general but there's an absurd amount of excellent one's to see - Dear Zachary, Waiting for Superman, Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room, The Invisible War, The Hunting Ground, Senna, Chasing Ice, Paradise Lost (trilogy on West Memphis Three - awesome), SOMM (and SOMM: Into the Bottle), What Happened to Aunt Diane, Jiro Dreams of Sushi and The Thin Blue Line just to name more than a few

Super Troopers is one of my favorite movies.

 

One of my favorite recent documentaries is Straight Outta Compton. Not everyone is going to like it because it is about gangster rap but the story is very much the American dream going from having nothing to having basically everything.

Garden State bored me to tears.

 

But speaking of documentaries, Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey is really worth seeing. Its the story of how they found Filipino Arnel Pineda to be their next lead singer. Very impressive and entertaining story.

My recommendations for must-see, hidden gem type movies

 

Not "new" movie: Layer Cake, just fun, interesting with a great soundtrack

 

Documentary: It Might Get Loud. Three different generations of electric guitarists talking about electric guitar and music.

 

New Releases: King Arthur...Guy Ritchie is hated by the critics, but I found this movie thoroughly entertaining. It's a known story, but I didn't find it to be "just another King Arthur" movie. I will buy a Director's cut, I think the editors played a role in the lack of success for the film....still though, loved it as did the people I saw the movie with and they own the theatre and see more movies than just about anyone else.

I can see that, and don't necessarily disagree...I still had a lot of fun watching it. Probably wouldn't have been the trio I would have picked, but I think they wanted three guys that approached the electric guitar in three very different ways to show how diverse of an instrument it can be.
