A few days rest seemed to help Mr. Erceg. He's gone deep today (as has Isan). Gatewood with yet another double.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Ponce tosses gem; Mudcats win fourth straight

Isan Diaz and Lucas Erceg both hit solo home runs in Saturday's series clinching victory

The Mudcats have become a mini Team Streak with their 4th straight win and Jake Gatewood's hitting streak extending to 22 games. Cody Ponce (8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K) threw 94 pitches, 72 for strikes, in picking up his 3rd win of the season. He had an 11/2 ground out to fly out ratio. The only run he gave up was a home run by Telvin Nash, who is playing his first series since coming back from a 50 game suspension. Nate Griep picked up the save despite giving up 2 runs and was helped by the Dash. The tying run was on first base when the hitter hit a routine popup and the runner ran, perhaps thinking there were 2 out, and was easily doubled off first for the final out.

Brannon Easterling started for Winston-Salem and threw well. Isan Diaz (1-2, HR 2 BB) tied the game in the 4th with a solo home run down the right field line. With one out in the 6th, Corey Ray chopped a single up the middle and then stole second. After a Luis Aviles ground out, Easterling wanted no part of Isan Diaz and walked him on 4 pitches. Jake Gatewood (2-4, 2B) then served a ball to the left field corner to drive in 2 runs and put the Mudcats ahead for good. Lucas Erceg (1-4) later added a solo home run to provide the winning margin.

Sox Fall To Sacramento, 11-2

Cordell launches sixth home run of 2017 in defeat.

The Sky Sox aim for a series split Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. MT against the Sacramento River Cats. (Paat Kelly)

By Colorado Springs Sky Sox | May 13, 2017 11:43 PM ET

It was a tough Saturday night for the Sky Sox and fans alike, as a promising start unraveled through innings 5,6 and 7. Ryan Cordell got them out to an early lead with a 2 run bomb in the first, scoring Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Cordell has an impressively hot 7 game hitting streak: 13 for 28, 3 2b, 2HR and 10RBI. Unfortunately his first inning shot was all the runs the River Cats pitching would surrender this evening, as Joan Gregorio settled in for 6 innings of effectively wild pitching for the win. Colorado Springs scattered 4 more singles and drew 5 walks. River Cats also got nice games from Austin Slater and Jae-Gyun Hwang, each of whom were a triple shy of the cycle.

Brandon Woodruff minimized damage through the first 4 innings but ran into trouble in the 5th. He labored through 4.2 IP, giving up 5 earned runs on 94 pitches, 58 for strikes. Relievers Andy Oliver and Tim Dillard both struggled to get outs as well. Dillard went 2/3 IP with 3 ER, 2 hits, 2BB, 2 HBP. David Goforth with a nice outing of 1.2 IP, 3K.

Tomorrow is a Hader day, and 50¢ hot dog day at the park.

Is Taylor Jungmann the most irrelevant of the 40-man roster players, regardless of results? I guess he's a somewhat relevant depth option until Super 2 deadline passes on guys like Woodruff and Hader.

Don't forget Cody Ponce with 8 strong innings.

94 pitches (72 strikes) to get through 8 innings - impressive.

In a small sample, Dustin Houle, who seems like he's been around forever but is only 23, is quietly hitting .300 in AA.

Coulter heating up. Rough April, but 3 HR and a 1.034 OPS in May. He's still in the picture.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Demi Orimoloye and Mario Feliciano each with two hits, Orimoloye with the lone extra base hit. Demi also nabbed his ninth and tenth bases of the year. Feliciano pushed his batting average back over .300, and walked once as well.

Braden Webb had another impressive outing, striking out five and walking none in 3 two-hit innings. Parker Berberet pitched a clean ninth for his first professional save. There's no reason that Berberet should be in Wisconsin any more than another few weeks.
