Final: Biloxi 4, Jacksonville 3

Nottingham's ninth inning single gives Shuckers sweep of Shrimp

The Shuckers head home for 10-game homestand having won 12 of their last 15 games

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Jacob Nottingham's ninth-inning single gave the Biloxi Shuckers a 4-3 victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Friday night, and just the second five-game series sweep in team history.

As they hit the halfway point of the season's first half, the Shuckers have won 12 of 15 and three series in a row. They end the night tied with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos atop the Southern League's South Division after seeing themselves seven games back as recently as April 26.

The Shuckers struck early off Jacksonville starter Omar Bencomo, getting an RBI double from Javier Betancourt in the second to open the scoring. The double was one of three on the night for the second baseman, and five for his team. Shuckers' starter Aaron Wilkerson helped his own cause with an RBI single to score Betancourt and put the Shuckers up 2-0. Back-to-back doubles from Angel Ortega and Dustin DeMuth in the third stretched the lead to 3-0.

Wilkerson was effective against the Jumbo Shrimp, but allowed a run back in the fourth inning and left with the bases loaded and nobody out in the sixth. After two of those runners came in off Forrest Snow, the Shrimp had tied the game 3-3 to end Wilkerson's chance at a winning decision.

The Shuckers and Jumbo Shrimp both threatened in the late innings. Biloxi left two runners on base in the top of the seventh, and Johnny Davis threw out the potential go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom half of the inning.

Bubba Derby (W, 2-0) pitched a perfect eighth inning, and Mauricio Dubon started the top of the ninth with a single off Greg Nappo (0-1). Dubon, who had stolen his league-leading eighth base earlier in the game, advanced to third when a hard-hit grounder off the bat of DeMuth got by second baseman David Vidal for an error. Then, with two outs, Nottingham lined a base hit to bring in the eventual game-winning run. Derby pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off the win.

The win was already the seventh for the Shuckers in their last at-bat, and improved Biloxi's road record to 14-6. Dubon picked up his league and Double-A-leading 18th stolen base and went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to six games. DeMuth upped his on-base streak to 20 games with a 1-for-4 night at the plate.

The Shuckers collected double-digit hits in all five of the games in Jacksonville, totaling 60 for the entire series. The only other five-game series sweep came last year at MGM Park against the Mississippi Braves, August 22-26.

The Shuckers head home for a 10-game homestand at MGM Park beginning on Saturday against the Mississippi Braves. RHP Taylor Jungmann will take the mound for Biloxi against RHP West Parsons for the Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM, with the Beau Rivage Pregame Show starting at 6:15 pm on Cruisin' WGCM AM-1240/FM-100.9 and the Shuckers Radio Network. The game will also be available at biloxishuckers.com and TuneIn Radio.

Biloxi Box Score

Normally just link, rather than copy and paste, the game summary, but did so here just to remind folks to review future links as the detailed report from Chris Harris and Biloxi staff is always excellent.

Who had Angel Ortega (two doubles) batting 3rd in the Biloxi lineup in their pool? Javier Betancourt more than doubled his season doubles output, going from two to five. If Bubba Derby's niche turns out to be in the bullpen, that seems fine if his 2017 success translates going forward.

Javier Betancourt suddenly surging, with 3 doubles tonight. He was given a few days off a week and a half ago, and has responded by hitting .444 in 8 games since. He just turned 22 earlier in the week.

Gatewood paces Mudcats in 8-5 series opening victory

The Mudcats came back from an early 3-0 deficit while winning their third straight game

Jordan Yamamoto, coming off the disabled list, worked two innings giving up 3 runs on 3 hits with no walks and 4 strike outs. Kodi Medeiros (5 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) had maybe his best outing of the season to collect the win. Brad Kuntz worked the last two innings.

The game turned in the 5th when Corey Ray hit into an apparent fielder's choice but Weston Wilson was ruled safe at 2nd. An argument ensued and it seemed to get to the Dash. Carolina went on to score 5 runs in the inning. Jake Gatewood (2-4, 2 2B) extended his hitting streak to 21. Wendell Rijo (2-4, 2 2B) also had two doubles and the Mudcats added 3 more for 7 total doubles in the game. Weston Wilson, getting the start at 3rd, committed two errors and whiffed on a foul popup. Making a nice grab of a line drive to his right to end the 8th, he raised his arms as he entered the duguout like a gold medal winner in the Olympics.

Wisconsin Boxscore

The Rattlers pull back to .500 and third place once again, with a slow-burning come from behind win against the Lake County Captains. Tom Jankins gave up 5 runs before recording the second out in a tough first inning, but those five runs were all he, Miguel Sanchez, and Dan Brown allowed over the final 26 outs of the game. Those final 8 2/3 innings included no walks, 12 strike outs, and just four singles.

After scoring six runs yesterday, the offense did one better in East Lake, Ohio on Friday. The comeback included three runs in the 3rd, one in the 5th, and the final three in the top of the 9th. Mario Feliciano paced the team with three hits, including a double, which bumped his average up to .297. Ryan Aguilar picked up his fifth and sixth hits of the past two games, and Demi Orimoloye picked up two hits as well. Caleb Whalen, just up from the Helena roster, hit a three run homer to get the Rattlers on the board in the third. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit.

Absolutely agreed on Archer. With his arm angle and movement, he's fun to watch and when he's on, really hard for RHB to pick up.

Cooper I had at #19 on my preseason top 25 ballot, half expecting to look like an idiot, but he seems to have unlocked some of that plus raw power. And the even better news is that he's hitting with more power without having altered his approach. Doubles power is still opposite field, and home runs aren't all pulled.

And he has a much higher OPS on the road, so it's a legit 900+ OPS, unlike the other guys on the team.
