Alvarado and Love combine to shut out the Mudcats

Cody Ponce struck out eight over 7.0 innings and took the tough luck loss

By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 6, 2017 9:43 PM ET

Weston Wilson proposed to his girl friend at the ceremonial first pitch but things went downhill from there. Steve Laurino hit a home run in the 5th off Cody Ponce for the only run of the game. Both teams were limited to 5 hits. After 21 runs yesterday, only 1 scored today. That's baseball. Ponce, as mentioned above, went 7 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits, 1 walk and 8 strike outs. He threw 92 pitches. Quintin Torres-Costa and Nate Griep followed without 1 shutout inning apiece.

Jake Gatewood extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Lucas Erceg now hitting .143 in his last 10 games and was moved to the 2nd spot in the order today. Troy Stokes Jr. is also in a funk batting .125 in his last 10 games.

Luis Aviles singles on a line drive to right fielder Ademar Rifaela. Jake Gatewood to 2nd.

Did you watch the end of MLB Network's Quick Pitch this AM? Mudcats made national airwaves again -- now, about that 12-17 record...

Anyway, lots of quotes here:

Colorado Springs Box Score

Kidding (kind of), Fresno allowed nine runs in the 4th to fall into an 18-1 hole just before the rains came, delaying right into a nearly two-hour wait that almost wiped out the not-yet-official game -- brilliant strategy!

How do you focus on pitching in amid a 19-run outburst? Because Paolo Espino and Tim Dillard are exactly the kind of pitchers who can excel in the Springs, and I'm now convinced Dillard may be up to Milwaukee sooner rather than later. Enjoy their lines in the box score link above.

3-4-4-3-4-4-3-2-3

That's the number of times the nine men in the lineup reached base. Wow, enjoy!

We figured RHP Luke Barker, the 25-year-old indy ball signee, would be a candidate for early promotion, but he has struggled in four of nine outings...

Crazy to think Dillard could get up to the big league club this year. I honestly thought he was more of a sideshow, part player, part commentator, part blogger at this point, no disrespect intended.

Especially when you think about the fact that he first pitched for the Brewers when Ben Sheets was still pitching(and pitching really well) for the Brewers back in '08.

Gotta root for a guy who has struck with it for that long.
