Looks like the Gatewood resurgence/emergence is lasting. Two more dingers today. It'd be nice to add a legit 1st base prospect to our list of studs.

Went to the first game of the Mudcats DH. For a A+ stadium it was really nice. It was also Star Wars day today so between innings we got to watch not one but two "lightsaber" fights. Gatewood's first HR was as far to the opposite field as possible, think it might have hit the RF foul pole. I thought Burnes pitched pretty well although he definitely ran out of gas in the 6th. The two ABs I saw from Erceg were pretty poor. One he swung at a low and outside slider for strike three and the other swinging strike three looked like it was on the inside corner and he just tried to make contact. Ray had great range in CF.

I got to meet Troy Stokes, Jr.'s dad in the stands: Troy Sr. Great guy and told him I was looking forward to watching his kid come up through the system. Stokes Jr. hit a nice liner up the middle to tie the game in the top of the 7th. Shame we let the game slip away in the bottom half.

Gatewood homers in 4-3 walk-off loss to Frederick

The Mudcats lost 4-3 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader in Frederick

By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | April 29, 2017 8:05 PM ET

Mudcats are not very good right now. It reminds of when the Orioles always said about the Brewers: keep it close and they will beat themselves in the late innings. Corbin Burnes started and went 5 1/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 3 runs while walking 1 and striking out 4. Colton Cross finished the game and took the loss.

Troy Stokes Jr singled in the tying run with 2 out in the 7th inning. This was followed by a line drive off the bat of Isan Diaz which was caught with a diving catch in center field to keep the game tied. Troy Stokes Jr ended up 2-3 with a double, walk and stolen base. Isan Diaz was 2-3 with a walk. Jake Gatewood was 1-2 with a walk and the home run mentioned by jjgott. Luis Aviles was getting into it with the umpire before Joe Ayrault was ejected for the 2nd straight game. I'm not sure what that was about but I believe the umpire was refusing to give him time out as he was setting up in the batter's box and the Keys were quick pitching him. Just a guess though.

Error prone Mudcats swept in Saturday doubleheader

Three Carolina errors helped fuel seven Frederick runs in game two

By Carolina Mudcats | April 29, 2017 8:10 PM ET

Brad Kuntz got the start in game 2 and took the loss. The Mudcats gave the Keys 6 outs in the 3rd inning, resulting in 6 runs scoring and the game basically being over. Wuilder Rodriguez pitched effectively the rest of the game, striking out 5 in 3 1/3 innings.

Jake Gatewood was 1-3 with a home run (this one also to right but longer and much more toward center field). Mitch Ghelfi was 1-3 with a double. Wendell Rijo was 1-3 with a double. Luis Aviles was 1-3 with a home run. Aviles was under heavy heckling from one idiot when he hit the home run and even the Keys fans laughed when Carlos Belonis (on his way to the on deck circle, waved at the heckler after Aviles homered). Normally, I wouldn't advocate players getting involved with hecklers but this seemed to defuse the situation somewhat.

I hate having to emphasize these situations, it's happening too much lately:

Frederick Bottom of the 3rd

Ricardo Andujar singles on a bunt ground ball to second baseman Wendell Rijo.

Drew Turbin singles on a line drive to center fielder Trent Clark. Ricardo Andujar to 3rd. Drew Turbin out at 2nd, center fielder Trent Clark to third baseman Lucas Erceg to second baseman Wendell Rijo.

Ryan Mountcastle singles on a line drive to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Ricardo Andujar scores.

Randolph Gassaway reaches on a throwing error by second baseman Wendell Rijo. Ryan Mountcastle to 2nd.

Yermin Mercedes homers (3) on a fly ball to left center field. Ryan Mountcastle scores. Randolph Gassaway scores.

Ademar Rifaela flies out to center fielder Trent Clark.

Alex Murphy reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Isan Diaz.

Josh Hart doubles (4) on a line drive to center fielder Trent Clark. Alex Murphy to 3rd.

Stuart Levy singles on a line drive to center fielder Trent Clark. Alex Murphy scores. Josh Hart scores.

Pitching Change: Wuilder Rodriguez replaces Brad Kuntz.

Ricardo Andujar grounds out, shortstop Isan Diaz to first baseman Jake Gatewood.

The first bolded part the throw got by the cutoff man and his backup. Fortunately, Erceg came off 3rd and was able to throw the hitter out at 2nd. The 2nd bolded part was a routine double play and they ended up getting nobody out. Kuntz was really hung out to dry in that inning by his defense. Speaking of Lucas Erceg, he is now hitting .175 in this last 10 games and looks like he may have lost some weight. Hopefully, everything is all right there.

Yeah that's what it seemed like. I missed the very beginning but he was trying to call time out to get the sign from 3rd and the ump wouldn't grant it. He stood with one foot outside for a while trying to get an explanation and that's when it escalated. The ump then called a bogus check swing strike on Aviles (with no check down to the other ump) before striking out. Aviles had to get held back from the ump and the Ayrault came running down from 3rd and got run almost immediately. Was a better show than the lightsaber duels.

Final: Biloxi 5, Pensacola 3, 15 innings

Derby, Shuckers outlast Pensacola in Saturday night marathon

Longest game in franchise history becomes third straight win

Bubba Derby earned his first Double-A win in relief performance on Saturday (Benton Reed photo)

They stayed up late to write the recap, be sure to click that link above and drink it all in, good stuff...

AUDIO: Chris Harris' voice survived the marathon, here are the highlights, including more Mauricio Dubon leather-flashing

Pretty impressive first three games of the road series for the Shuckers, as Pensacola was 14-6 to begin. Now at 10-13, the Biloxi boys can at least have some first-half relevance in terms of wins and losses.

Biloxi Box Score

Eleven shuckers reached base via walk or HBP, so even if some batting averages dropped here, on-base percentages were salvaged; this is Dustin Houle's age 23 season -- he reached base four times here, has a stellar defensive reputation, shined in big league camp, and one would think is deserving of more than the 32 at-bats he's received thus far. It was a full night off here for Jacob Nottingham.

Biloxi Game Log

In front of a soldout Pensacola crowd, Bubba Derby escaped these two jams in particular when a man was on 3rd with just one out -- wow:

Pensacola Bottom of the 11th

Pitching Change: Bubba Derby replaces Tristan Archer, batting 9th, replacing Johnny Davis.

Josh VanMeter grounds out, shortstop Angel Ortega to first baseman Dustin DeMuth.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Brian O'Grady replaces Geoff Broussard.

Brian O'Grady walks.

Gabriel Guerrero singles on a line drive to right fielder Clint Coulter. Brian O'Grady to 3rd.

Bubba Derby intentionally walks Aristides Aquino. Gabriel Guerrero to 2nd.

Eric Jagielo strikes out swinging.

Taylor Sparks flies out to left fielder Victor Roache.

Pensacola Bottom of the 12th

Joe Hudson pops out to first baseman Dustin DeMuth in foul territory.

Leon Landry triples (2) on a line drive to center fielder Michael Reed.

Blake Trahan grounds out, shortstop Angel Ortega to first baseman Dustin DeMuth.

Bubba Derby intentionally walks Josh VanMeter.

With Brian O'Grady batting, Josh VanMeter advances to 2nd on defensive indifference.

Brian O'Grady walks.

Gabriel Guerrero grounds out, first baseman Dustin DeMuth to pitcher Bubba Derby.
