Brewers No. 21 prospect Freddy Peralta 87-90 FB, SL 77-78 for @CarolinaMudcats in first 2 innings

Kyle Glaser‏Verified account @KyleAGlaser 1h1 hour ago

Corey Ray is really scuffling right now. Swinging through 90-91 mph fastballs in all quadrants. Just straight up missing them #Brewers

Kyle Glaser‏Verified account @KyleAGlaser 60m60 minutes ago

Freddy Peralta reached back for a bit more in the fourth. FB 90-93, SL 81 there. #Brewers No. 21 prospect is thru 4 IP with one hit allowed

Kyle Glaser‏Verified account @KyleAGlaser 35m35 minutes ago

Freddy Peralta is dealing. Has struck out 4 of last 5 and kicked velo up into 91-93 with bite. Has a two-hitter thru 5 for @CarolinaMudcats

Kyle Glaser‏Verified account @KyleAGlaser 18m18 minutes ago

Marcos Diplan is in for @CarolinaMudcats and struggling. FB 92-95, SL 87-88, but SL hangs and is getting crushed #Brewers

Kyle Glaser‏Verified account @KyleAGlaser 2m2 minutes ago

Been to a few @CarolinaMudcats games, honestly Jake Gatewood has been their best position player each time. Good ABs, hard contact, great D

Kyle Glaser‏Verified account @KyleAGlaser 12s13 seconds ago

Gatewood just outperforming Ray, Diaz, Clark, etc at this point, both on paper and in person. We'll see how it holds up rest of the year

Kyle Glaser‏Verified account @KyleAGlaser 36s36 seconds ago

Corey Ray just struck out for the third time today, this time with the bases loaded. He has 9 strikeouts in his last 17 at-bats #Brewers

Kyle Glaser‏Verified account @KyleAGlaser 22m22 minutes ago

Corey Ray redeems himself a bit with an RBI double in the 8th. Carolina leads Down East 7-5 in what's been a seesaw game

Kyle Glaser‏Verified account @KyleAGlaser 7s8 seconds ago

And Jake Gatewood makes a sweet over the head catch to end it. Carolina 9, Down East 7, final

Mudcats avoid the sweep with 9-7 series finale victory

Luis Aviles scored three times and Isan Diaz had two doubles in the series finale victory

By Carolina Mudcats | April 27, 2017 4:44 PM ET

16x9_LuisAviles_v3gdmcqa_95j9mjk9.jpg

This game set baseball back a few decades but a win is a win I guess. Freddie Peralta pitched a strong 5 innings (2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K) with only a long home run by Jairo Beras blemishing the performance. Marcos Diplan (2 2/3 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 1 K) however was another story as detailed above. Nate Griep finished the game (1 1/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K) and picked up the win despite not being very effective.

Troy Stokes Jr singled in the 1st extending his hitting streak to 8 games although striking out 3 times later on. Isan Diaz was 3-5 with 2 doubles (one on a missed sliding catch attempt that got by the outfielder). Luis Aviles was 2-3 with a walk. Max McDowell and Carlos Belonis were also 2-3 with a walk.

Carolina Game Log

This game could have been broken open in the 2nd inning when the Mudcats had gotten 5 of the first 9 hitters on base and it looked like the starter was down to perhaps his last hitter. Then:

Carolina Bottom of the 2nd

Luis Aviles walks.

Max McDowell singles on a line drive to center fielder Michael O'Neill. Luis Aviles to 3rd. Max McDowell to 2nd on the throw.

Wendell Rijo out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Eduard Pinto. Luis Aviles scores.

Carlos Belonis singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jairo Beras. Max McDowell to 3rd.

With Corey Ray batting, Max McDowell caught stealing home, pitcher Jeffrey Springs to first baseman Carlos Garay to catcher Chuck Moorman.

With Corey Ray batting, Carlos Belonis picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Chuck Moorman to shortstop Josh Morgan to first baseman Carlos Garay.

The dreaded double steal totally backfired. Springs got out of the jam without even throwing a pitch with the top of the Mudcat order up.

The key 8th inning:

Carolina Bottom of the 8th

Luis Aviles doubles (3) on a ground ball to right fielder Jairo Beras.

Max McDowell walks.

Pitching Change: Tyler Davis replaces Adam Choplick.

With Wendell Rijo batting, throwing error by Tyler Davis on the pickoff attempt, Luis Aviles to 3rd. Max McDowell to 2nd.

With Wendell Rijo batting, passed ball by Chuck Moorman, Luis Aviles scores. Max McDowell to 3rd.

Wendell Rijo walks.

Carlos Belonis singles on a line drive to center fielder Michael O'Neill. Max McDowell scores. Wendell Rijo to 2nd.

Corey Ray doubles (4) on a line drive to right fielder Jairo Beras. Wendell Rijo scores. Carlos Belonis to 3rd.

Troy Stokes strikes out swinging.

Isan Diaz doubles (3) on a line drive to right fielder Jairo Beras. Carlos Belonis scores. Corey Ray scores.

Lucas Erceg flies out to center fielder Michael O'Neill. Isan Diaz to 3rd.

Jake Gatewood grounds out, third baseman Josh Altmann to first baseman Carlos Garay.

How in the hell does a franchise allow any of there players not to get there eyes checked.. That is embarrassing... seeing pitches and knowing what is being thrown at u is essential to being successful for hitters... another example of this organization being behind the eight ball on basic and important topics.. how many other guys need there eyes checked? Smh..

Did you read the article? He had 20/20 when they drafted him.

Harrison with another dinger. Kinda crazy that he and Gatewood are maybe breaking out in the same season.

We can only hope. Super depressing watching those two the last few years. When we drafted them I thought at least one of them would become a stud.

Cubs Rally With Three-Run Eighth in 9-7 Thriller

Garrett Cooper records a three-hit night and drives in three runs in Thursday loss.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Sky Sox pitching failed on Thursday, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits and seven walks in a 9-7 lose to the Iowa Cubs.

Josh Hader (4.2 IP, 4 hits, 3 BB, 5 K, 5 ER) was fine until giving up a grand slam in the 5th to Ian Happ. The Sky Sox would rally to take the lead in the 7th, but relievers Andrew Barbossa (0.1 IP, 1 hit, 2 BB, 1 ER), David Goforth (1.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 BB, 1 ER) and Andy Oliver (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER) would give up a run in the bottom of the 7th, and then three more in the 8th.

On the offensive side, the Sky Sox were lead by Garrett Cooper (3-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) and Ryan Cordell (2-5, 2B).

Cooper is quietly having a nice season. The big right hander is hitting .329 with seven doubles, three HRs and 19 RBI. And he is hitting .400 on the road - so he’s not just been raking in the thin Colorado air.

Yes I read the article.. it said he got his eye tested up until 2013 of high school and was 20/20.. nothing about him getting tested after he was drafted by this franchise. What does that have to do with this org. having regular eye exams.. this seems ridiculous.. I'm not sure about u but this should be an obvious priority. I even get a free eye exam every yr from my terrible insurance every year.

MiLB.com focused on the grand slam from the Cubs' perspective --

Ian Happ knew he had a bead on Josh Hader on Thursday night, and in his third trip to the plate, he proved it.

The Cubs' No. 2 prospect belted his second professional grand slam and matched a career high with five RBIs as Triple-A Iowa came from behind to down Colorado Springs, 9-7, at Principal Park.

"He got me with the first at-bat, three pitches, did a good job putting me away," said Happ, who fanned to lead off the first inning against the Brewers' No. 3 prospect before drawing a walk in the third. "The second at-bat, I worked the count and was able to see a lot of pitches, see a lot of his stuff. After that, I had a pretty good feel for him and was able to come up in that spot and get a pitch to handle."

Iowa jumped out to the game's first lead, but trailed, 3-1, when Happ came to the plate in the fifth. It didn't take long for the 2015 first-rounder to find a pitch he wanted.

"First pitch, he threw me a cutter," MLB.com's No. 24 overall prospect said. "I felt good about the at-bat before that, the walk. He threw me a cutter, and I got the barrel to the ball and was able to get it in the air."

That was the modest description. Happ's manager added more perspective.

"Oh my goodness, it was just a line drive. It was a slider up in the zone left up by Hader," Iowa skipper Marty Pevey said. "It was just a live-drive home run. It left the ballpark in two seconds."

Shuckers rally off Pensacola bullpen for win

Victor Roache's seventh-inning double proves to be the winner

Now that you've read the linked recap above, here's Chris Harris' audio highlights.

Biloxi Box Score

Taylor Jungmann threw 76 pitches in four innings, 44 for strikes, two wild pitches; Mauricio Dubon now 10-for-11 in SB attempts -- odd stat: Dubon was exactly 30-for-37 in steals in both 2015 and 2016; two singles apiece for 1B Dustin DeMuth and 3B Blake Allemand; Victor Roache only entered the game in the 5th after a double-switch upon Jungmann's removal...

Biloxi Game Log

Chris Harris note: "Mauricio Dubon is making his first start at 2B tonight. He came in as part of a double switch yesterday and played 2B."

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers snapped a four-game losing streak with an emphatic 6-1 victory over the Burlington Bees at Community Field on Thursday night. Monte Harrison and Tucker Neuhaus each hit a home run for the Rattlers. Jordan Desguin pitched five shutout innings to earn his second win of the season.

Wisconsin (10-11) scored a run in the first inning. Demi Orimoloye doubled to start the game. Mario Feliciano blooped a single to right that put runners on the corners. Burlington starting pitcher Nate Bertness got Harrison to ground into a 4-6-3 double play, but Orimoloye scored from third for the 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Joantgel Segovia singled and Jose Cuas doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Burlington brought the infield in and Gilbert Lara lined a single through the drawn-in infielders to drive home both runners.

Harrison made it 4-0 when he started the third inning by lining a 1-0 pitch to right for his sixth home run of the season.

Jordan Desguin was the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. He allowed a two-out single in the first inning, but picked that runner off first. In the second, he walked the first two batters he faced, but escaped the inning with no damage thanks to a strikeout and an inning-ending double play. Desguin pitched five shutout innings, allowed one hit, walked three, and struck out five.

The Bees (8-11) got on the scoreboard with a two-out rally against reliever Miguel Sanchez in the seventh inning. The right-hander hit Roberto Baldoquin with a pitch to put a runner on base. Brennan Morgan followed by lining a double to left to score Baldoquin to cut Wisconsin's lead to 4-1.

In the eighth inning, Wisconsin tacked on two runs on one swing of the bat. Harrison drew a walk to start the inning. Then, Neuhaus cracked a long, towering home run to right-center and the Rattlers were up 6-1.

Harrison and Neuhaus each have six home runs in 2017. Both are tied with Bradley Jones of Lansing and Carlos Rincon of Great Lakes for the Midwest League lead in homers this season.

Luke Barker closed out the game with a scoreless ninth for Wisconsin.

Game two of the series is set for Friday morning. Victor Diaz (0-1, 8.31) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Andrew Vinson (1-2, 8.31) is set to start for the Bees. Game time is 11:30am.
