Final: Jackson 6, Biloxi 5

Shuckers drop series finale to Generals in front of 3,684 on Education Day at MGM Park

OK, please read the linked game summary above. It wasn't the Shuckers' intention, but the summary makes clear (and I listened to a good portion of this game), that the contest certainly wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

Angel Ventura allowed 11 baserunners in his 4.1 innings, Bubba Derby did well to spare Ventura's line, but was then victimized during his 2.2 innings, and as you read, the runs allowed by Tayler Scott proved costly in the end. The Generals stranded 15, so partial credit goes to the three hurlers for that, but baserunners galore.

Of course, the Shuckers early run was unearned. So the streak between scoring earned runs was at least 26 innings for Biloxi. Not what you want to do when your Farm Director is in town.

You may not want to peek at the batting averages in the right-most column...

Biloxi Bottom of the 5th

Angel Ortega singles on a ground ball to left fielder Stewart Ijames.

Javier Betancourt singles on a ground ball to left fielder Stewart Ijames. Angel Ortega to 2nd.

Dustin Houle out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Ivan Pineyro to second baseman Jamie Westbrook. Angel Ortega to 3rd. Javier Betancourt to 2nd.

Michael Reed strikes out swinging, catcher Jose Queliz to first baseman Kevin Cron.

Johnny Davis grounds out, shortstop Kevin Medrano to first baseman Kevin Cron.

Listening to that Michael Reed at-bat, with him flailing at strike three in the dirt, was upsetting (I was behind the wheel).

This team needs a day off in the worst way (heck, we need a day off from their recent play), but that won't come until Tuesday.

Cody Ponce (7 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 2 HBP, 2 K) got the start and ended up throwing 89 pitches in the 7 innings. He appeared to become ill in the last inning and the trainer was called out but he stayed in the game to finish the inning. Colton Cross, who has had a slow start (BAA=.391 going into today's game), took the loss while giving up 4 hits in 2 innings.

Troy Stokes Jr was 2-3 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to 7 games. Jake Gatewood was 1-3 with a walk and a double off the center field wall.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kane County Cougars completed a three-game sweep of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with a 13-0 shutout on Wednesday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Cody Reed pitched six no-hit innings for the Cougars and was supported by a 13-hit attack in which the Kane County offense scored in each of the first five innings. The Rattlers have lost four straight games to fall to two games under .500.

Kane County (14-6) took the lead in the top of the first inning. Wisconsin starting pitcher Braden Webb walked the leadoff batter. Luis Silverio was next and he lined the first pitch of his at bat to left-center for an RBI double.

The Cougars added to their lead in the second inning. Jasrado Chisholm doubled to start the frame and moved to third on a passed ball. Kyle Smith followed with a bloop single to right for a 2-0 lead.

The lead was extended to 4-0 as Kane County scored two more runs in the top of the third inning. Jose Herrera drove in the first run of the inning with a double. Smith drove in the second run of the third with a groundout.

Webb walked the first two batters in the top of the fourth inning and was replaced by Andrew Vernon out of the Wisconsin bullpen. Vernon got the first out of the inning, but gave up a two-run double to Marcus Wilson. Later, a wild pitch allowed Wilson to score for a 7-0 lead.

The Cougars put the game way out of reach in the top of the fifth inning against Cameron Roegner. They sent ten men to the plate, collected four hits, drew two walks, and scored six runs to pad their lead out to 13-0. Paxton De La Garza had the main hit of the inning with a two-run single to push Kane County's advantage to double digits.

The Rattlers (9-11) couldn't figure out Reed. He walked one and struck out eleven over six innings. The only other runner he allowed was when Tucker Neuhaus hit a high popup to short right that was dropped for an error. The three Kane County starters in the series against the Rattlers went 16 innings, allowed three hits, walked two, struck out 24, and allowed no runs.

Tucker Neuhaus broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh inning against Riley Smith. However, that was the only hit of the night for the Rattlers.

Reliever Parker Berberet was a bright spot for the Timber Rattlers. The catcher-turned-pitcher went four scoreless innings and struck out seven for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin concluded their seven-game homestand with a 3-4 record.

The Timber Rattlers begin a brief four-game road trip with a series against the Burlington Bees at Community Field in Burlington, Iowa on Thursday night. Jordan Desguin (1-1, 5.06) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Nate Bertness (0-1, 5.23) is set to start for the Bees. Game time is 6:30pm.
