Burnes records 9 Ks in 6-1 home win

Stokes Jr. and Erceg both hit home runs for the Mudcats on Sunday

By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | April 23, 2017 6:29 PM ET

16x9_Burnes_a92xgk1c_2pg32xvj.jpg

Corbin Burnes (6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K, 6/1 GO/FO) picked up his first victory of the season and in the process lowered his ERA to 0.82 early in the season. Jon Olczak and Nate Griep finished the game off.

After trailing 1-0 through 5 innings, Corey Ray (1-3, 2B, BB, SB) tied the game with a double off the wall in right center. The lead run then came in on a 2 out single by Lucas Erceg (2-4, HR, 2 RBI). Then in the 7th, Troy Stokes Jr. (2-3, HR, 3 RBI, BB, SB) hit a 2 out 3 run home run to essentially salt the game away.

Carolina Box Score

I agree with Outlander that Troy Stokes, Jr. has had a really strong start to this season. He has fielded well, run the bases

well, thrown well and hit well (raising his batting average to .314 after today's game).

Jake Gatewood had a BABIP of .500 going into today's game and was 1-1 in that department today. Obviously, he won't continue at that pace but it does tell you that he has hit a lot of line drives this year.

Colorado Springs Box Score

The Sky Sox almost blew it on Sunday. Leading 6-0 going into the 9th, Stephen Kohlscheen and Tristan Archer coughed up five runs before Rob Scahill came on for the game’s final out - and a 6-5 victory. Amazingly, all five the Sounds runs came with two outs.

Paolo Espino and Ryan Cordell were the game’s stars. Espino threw 6.2 innings of no run ball, giving up only four hits and a walk, while striking out five. Cordell went 4-4 with a double, HR and an RBI. Garrett Cooper (1-4) added a three run homer.

Cordell’s big game upped his batting average to .305.

As noted earlier in this thread, Colorado Springs has the PCL’s best ERA at 3.11. The Sky Sox also have the best OPS in the league.

Colorado Springs Game Log

The Sky Sox broke open the game in the 6th, highlighted by Cooper’s three run blast.

Col. Springs Bottom of the 6th

Tyler Heineman doubles (4) on a ground ball to left fielder Matt McBride.

Kyle Wren flies out to right fielder Mark Canha. Tyler Heineman to 3rd.

Lewis Brinson out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Mark Canha. Tyler Heineman scores.

Eric Sogard walks.

Ryan Cordell singles on a ground ball to third baseman Renato Nunez. Eric Sogard to 2nd.

Garrett Cooper homers (2) on a fly ball to center field. Eric Sogard scores. Ryan Cordell scores.

Brett Phillips grounds out, second baseman Joey Wendle to first baseman Chris Parmelee.

But the team almost gave it away in the 9th. With two outs, the sequence went like this: hit, walk, hit, hit, wild pitch, hit, hit - then finally a line out.

Nashville Top of the 9th

Melvin Mercedes called out on strikes.

Mark Canha pops out to first baseman Garrett Cooper in foul territory.

Chris Parmelee doubles (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Ryan Cordell.

Renato Nunez walks.

Bruce Maxwell doubles (6) on a fly ball to left fielder Kyle Wren. Chris Parmelee scores. Renato Nunez scores.

Pitching Change: Tristan Archer replaces Stephen Kohlscheen.

With Kenny Wilson batting, wild pitch by Tristan Archer, Ryan Lavarnway to 2nd.

Kenny Wilson singles on a ground ball to shortstop Eric Sogard. Ryan Lavarnway to 3rd.

Pitching Change: Rob Scahill replaces Tristan Archer.

Matt McBride doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Kyle Wren. Ryan Lavarnway scores. Kenny Wilson scores.

Franklin Barreto lines out to second baseman Ivan De Jesus Jr.

Chiefs Rally Late to Deny Rattlers a Sweep

Wisconsin can't hold late lead and fall 6-5 to Peoria

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

I turned the game off after the fifth, assuming the Rattlers just about had this in the bag, but that didn't work out. Nattino Diplan pitched fine by Nattino Diplan standards, but Victor Diaz's second appearance of the season was another hot mess. He has struggled to throw strikes, and his crossfire delivery is kind of all over the place. Even that would have been fine, but Luke Barker also came in and struggled to throw strikes, and then when he did, he gave up the lead. If the Rattlers' pitchers had been pounding the strike zone like the team has been doing a pretty good job doing as of late, I think we would have had a series sweep. Such as it is, annoying loss.

Tucker Neuhaus and Monte Harrison both had two more hits, and each had a double. Harrison's double would have been a home run if the wall were 15 feet high instead of 16 feet high. Joantgel Segovia also had two hits, both singles, and Demi Orimoloye collected another double with his lone base knock of the day.

Ronnie Gideon struck out two more times and currently has an unsightly 2:21 BB:K ratio. It took a little bit for his bat to start going at Helena last year - hopefully history repeats itself. The bottom four Rattlers in the lineup all had averages under .200, something that should be begin to be alarming in the next few weeks.

Wisconsin Log

In which they lose the lead:

Peoria Top of the 8th

Brian O'Keefe homers (2) on a fly ball to left field.

Ryan McCarvel strikes out swinging.

Andy Young triples (2) on a line drive to center fielder Monte Harrison.

Pitching Change: Luke Barker replaces Victor Diaz.

Shane Billings singles on a line drive to center fielder Monte Harrison. Andy Young scores.

With Matt Davis batting, Shane Billings steals (1) 2nd base.

Matt Davis walks.

Tommy Edman flies out to right fielder Demi Orimoloye. Shane Billings to 3rd.

J. R. Davis singles on a ground ball to right fielder Demi Orimoloye. Shane Billings scores. Matt Davis to 2nd.

Stefan Trosclair walks. Matt Davis to 3rd. J. R. Davis to 2nd.

Andrew Knizner grounds into a force out, fielded by second baseman Tucker Neuhaus. Stefan Trosclair out at 2nd.

Houle, Shuckers squeak past Generals

By Doug Barber, Special to The Sun Herald

Biloxi Shuckers catcher Dustin Houle was Mr. Clutch in the 10th inning Sunday against the Jackson Generals.

Houle’s single to right field to push in the game-winner as the Shuckers knocked off Jackson 3-2 in walk-off fashion at MGM Park.

George Iskenderian led off the 10th with a walk, and moved up to third on a double to right by Javier Betancourt. Houle then ripped a shot to right before a drawn-in infield to give the Shuckers (7-10) their second win this season in MGM Park.

The Shuckers had loaded the bases in the ninth with one out but the Generals got out of the jam.

“I was just thinking to get something nice to hit,’’ Houle said. “He threw it inside a little bit but I was ready for it. I got enough wood on it to sneak it past the first baseman.

“We were resilient today. Late in the ballgame, I think everyone was wanting to get this one over with. We were running out of pitching at the end.’’

Before the game-winning hit, the Shuckers were 0-for-22 since Friday night with runners in scoring position.

Betancourt had two hits to lead the Shuckers.

Colin Walsh had three hits for the Generals (10-6).

Matt Ramsey (1-0) was the winning pitcher in relief. Jorge Lopez got the start and worked six innings, giving up one run and one hit.

Jared Miller took the loss.

“(Lopez) pitched great through six,’’ Houle said. “He had his changeup working and his curveball was going. (Tayler) Scott came in and did his job. He didn’t have his best stuff but he was able to get by with what he had. (Bubba) Derby came in (in the 8th) and then we got to Ramsey, and he is our closer.’’

The Shuckers continue their homestand Monday at 6:35 p.m. with the Generals. The Generals face the Shuckers also on Tuesday and Wednesday before Biloxi heads to Pensacola on Thursday.

Biloxi jumped on top 1-0 in the second inning, taking advantage of Taylor Clarke’s control. Clarke hit Clint Coulter with a pitch. Then Betancourt rapped a hit-and-run single to right. Houle walked and Lopez helped his own cause by blasting a sacrifice fly to center.

The Generals evened it at 1 apiece in the top of the fourth. Dawel Lugo drew a one-out walk. Walsh doubled to left, and then Kevin Cron hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Lugo.

Coulter snapped the 1-1 tie with a solo home run to left center off Jackson relief pitcher Joey Krehbiel in the sixth.

Jackson came back with an unearned run in the seventh on a throwing error by Scott. But Biloxi escaped a further bases-loaded jam when Cron was thrown out at the plate, trying to advance on a pitch that got away from Houle. Houle tossed it to Scott for the tag that ended a potential uprising.

“We had many opportunities in the game,’’ Biloxi manager Mike Guerrero said. “It is always good to see a walk-off (hit). We need to keep working to keep our offense going. Our pitching was good. You have to tip the cap to guys who threw last night and then threw today. They kept us in the game to give us an opportunity.’’

***

Biloxi Box Score

Clint Coulter reached three times to lift his OPS to .587; Victor Roache 0-for-5 and his OPS is .463 -- those two 2012 first round picks will likely be linked forever, neither added to the 40-man nor taken in Rule 5 when eligible the past two winters.

(And yes, sorry, should be focusing on the positives after a win...)

And yet, things have been so sluggish for the Shuckers, and some of the statistical holes dug so deep, it's easier to allow the April picture to overwhelm the individual game picture. Michael Reed has a shiny .917 OPS but fanned three times here, now 16 K's in 51 AB's. Bubba Derby has pitched well in five brief relief appearances, but is that the role that was envisioned for him after the Khris Davis deal?

So sorry, Biloxi, this team feels fortunate to be at 7-10 after Sunday's win, and thankfully it's very early, and I should probably remind myself of that, but there's much goodwill yet to be earned out of the gate with this squad.

What’s Lopez’s date that 2023 becomes team control? Mid-may sometime I presume, but not sure how many days are needed to offset his September call-up in 2015. While the diminishing walk rate to start the year is a nice touch, its time to challenge him with MLB hitters whether in the rotation or bullpen.
