So, on a day when the Brewers play an afternoon affair in Wrigley, the only evening media choice will be to flip to Chris Harris' audio call from Chattanooga immediately after the big league game to catch what you can of that twinbill.

Ugh on Trent Clark -- hopefully just an "off" day:

Baseball America's Kyle Glaser was in Zebulon for the Carolina twinbill Tuesday --

Corey Ray went 1-for-6 with a double, a walk and three strikeouts combined in the doubleheader. He struggled swinging and missing on outside pitches and was picked off both times he reached base. The first time he was picked off came at first base in game one and McKenzie picked him off of second base in game two.

Isan Diaz went 1-for-6 with a single and two strikeouts and Trent Clark went 1-for-3 with a single and two walks in the doubleheader. Diaz showed nifty glove work and a solid arm at shortstop but Clark let multiple balls drop playing both right field and center field, earning derision from scouts in attendance who criticized his motor and effort.

Carolina righthander Corbin Burnes, the Brewers No. 24 prospect, started game one and pitched five scoreless innings with three hits allowed, four walks and five strikeouts. He struggled with his fastball command, missing high frequently, but escaped jams by inducing three ground-ball double plays. He primarily relied on a 91-93 mph fastball and 77-80 mph curveball and mixed in an 83-85 mph slider. The 2016 fourth-round pick out of St. Mary’s has a 0.56 ERA in three starts this season.

I've noticed that Clark seems to get poor reads on balls, especially those hit over him. I can't remember which game it was recently, he was playing CF and took one of the more serpentine patterns I've seen to a ball hit over him, and could never get himself under it.

I guess I haven't noticed a lack of effort from him, though. That Carolina team does drive me nuts with all the called third strike calls they get themselves out on.

Phillips just hit a salami, he has been coming along nicely. If he's hitting like this in July there's no longer any need for Nieuwenhuis and it's time to see Phillips get his feet wet up here.

He is going to get a shot a lot sooner if he hits and Broxton doesn't.

Both could get calls, but I would think Brinson would be more of the direct replacement for Broxton if Broxton doesn't get it together. Phillips seems more likely to end up with a Nieuwenhuis 2016 type role, 400 prorated PAs or so and moving all over the OF.

I figured the same and actually want to see a rotation where Cordell/Phillips can still get major ABs even after Brinson gets called up. Though Santana hasn't impressed that greatly himself. At least looks like he belongs on an MLB roster.

Rattlers Drop 6-3 Decision at Clinton to End Road Trip

Feliciano and Harrison stay hot for Wisconsin's offense

Wisconsin Boxscore

As the subheading of the T-Rats official game summary says, Mario Feliciano and Monte Harrison stayed hot for the Wisconsin offense, both with three hits, but it wasn't quite enough today. And to be fair, Demi Orimoloye also continued a nice little hot streak with two hits of his own. The only extra base hit for Wisconsin came off the bat of Feliciano, a 5th inning double. As we slowly inch to the point where sample sizes become the tiniest bit meaningful, Feliciano sports a shiny 1.047 OPS. That's good enough for 7th in the Midwest League.

Trey Supak was not sharp for the first time this season. He pitches up in the zone more than most pitchers the Brewers have, and while that usually works for him, he had trouble finding the strike zone, and when he did he found too much of it. Supak gave up 5 hits in 4 2/3 innings, 3 of which were for extra bases and 1 of was a home run. He was charged with 4 runs, all earned, though one of those crossed the plate after he left the game, courtesy of a home run off of reliever Miguel Sanchez.

Phillips had an ugly 5 game stretch where he was 2-20 with 1bb to 9Ks and no XBH 2RBIs

In other 6 games (first 2 & last 4)

12 of 24 (.500BA) 2 Doubles 7 runs 3HRs 10 RBIs 4 BBs 7Ks.

Problem is I think his swing isn't consistent enough and he's not a a great contact hitter so those 2-20 streaks with a lot of Ks will come & go

Colorado Springs Box Score

Brett Phillips (2-3, 2 BB, 2 HR, 6 RBI) has been on fire of late. Wednesday afternoon he hit a pair of home runs (including a grand slam) and drove in six runs as the Sky Sox crushed the Memphis Redbirds 13-4.

On the mound, Brandon Woodruff turned in a mediocre performance, going five innings and giving up four runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. He struck out three Redbirds. The Sky Sox bullpen (Tristan Archer, Tyler Cravy, Wei-Chung Wang) put up goose eggs the rest of way.

Garrett Cooper walked in a pinch hitting appearance, ending his 11-game hitting streak.

Phillips has raised his batting average to .318 for the season. He leads the team in HRs, RBIs and strikeouts.

I totally agree Brinson will be the first up if Keon still struggles but I like to see Phillips continue to hit to replace Kirk.

Outside of Braun, the Brewers have no OF who's proven over an entire season so theoretically both RF and CF are up for grabs to whoever can prove worthy. Broxton's struggling big time right now but reality is that he probably has until end of May to get going at which time I'm sure Brinson gets a call.. Nieuwenhuis? I couldn't believe he was handed a position without competition this spring. So far, he's contributed nothing. Why not take a look at Phillips if not find a veteran who might be available? Neither could be worse than Kirk.
