I like to look at some stats once in a while. The Mudcats have faced a steady diet of lefties in the early going. Frederick even seemed to bring in an extra one for the series. Surprising then,

OPS L/R

Erceg: 0.895/0.527

I. Diaz 0.801/0.356

Clark 0.940/0.449

The right handed hitters seem to be more in alignment with what you might expect (except for Aviles to a minor extent).

Gatewood 1.042/0.807

Aviles 0.873/0.928

Stokes 0.944/0.570

Obviously, it's very early yet. Just something to think about.

Who would have thought out of gates it would be Gatewood & Aviles being the offensive stars in that loaded lineup? Only week & half in but both are showing outstanding growth. Now with Ray back, hopefully him, Diaz, Erceg, Clark can really get going. Offense has so much potential! Pitching staff is good enough to keep them in any game. I see zero reason barring any promotions, that this team shouldn't at least the 1st half of the season.

Nice to see Phillips have a good game at plate. Now putting a few of those together in a row is next step. Cooper Overbay keeps streak alive at I believe 10 games! Hader 2nd 1 hit Outing but 9bbs in those two games.

Thing with Biloxi is they have guys who should hit there who just aren't right now. Roache, Coulter, Dubon, Reed and Nottingham are all capable of hitting or bringing power to line up but really it's Demuth, Houle & Ortega doing literallay everything for their offense right now. Very disappointing so far. Hopefully some click soon.

Mudcats come alive late in 9-3 drubbing of Keys

Jake Gatewood was 3-for-5 with three runs and three doubles

By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | April 16, 2017 7:41 PM ET

Gatewood_hqh6v4us_zriu3p00.jpg

This was two games in one. The first half was dominated by Ofelky Peralta, the 19-year-old starting pitcher for the Keys. He allowed a triple to Corey Ray to open the game and that turned out to be the only hit the Mudcats had against him. He struck out 9 in 5 innings throwing probably 90% fastballs. The Mudcats did work him for 4 walks. The Mudcats destroyed the Keys bullpen in the other half of the game however. The Keys did not go to their customary lefthanders out of the bullpen for some reason.

Corey Ray was 2-5, including the aforementioned triple and stole a base. Troy Stokes had the tying 2 run home run along with a walk and a stolen base. Jake Gatewood was 3-5 with 3 doubles in consecutive innings. The first of these hit near the top of the 25 foot right field wall. Jake is now hitting a cool .361 in the early going. Luis Aviles with another 2 hit game.

Coner Harber (4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 W, 3 K) started the game and really didn't have great command despite only giving up 1 run. I guess we have to credit him for battling (or at least Ned Yost might). I thought Quintin Torres-Costa (3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K) threw very well but had some flares drop in on him which hurt. Jon Olczak (2 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 4 K, save) worked the final two innings and was very strong. He was really commanding his curve ball, which he has struggled with this year, which makes his fastball

that much better. Carolina Box Score

Carolina Game Log

With the score 3-0 Keys:

Carolina Bottom of the 6th

Pitching Change: Franderlin Romero replaces Ofelky Peralta.

Isan Diaz grounds out, shortstop Ricardo Andujar to first baseman Alex Murphy.

Jake Gatewood doubles (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Steve Wilkerson.

Luis Aviles singles on a line drive to center fielder Austin Hays. Jake Gatewood scores.

Troy Stokes Jr. homers (2) on a fly ball to left center field. Luis Aviles scores.

Max McDowell lines out to right fielder Steve Wilkerson.

Weston Wilson singles on a ground ball to third baseman Jomar Reyes.

Wendell Rijo pops out to first baseman Alex Murphy in foul territory.

And this put the game away:

Carolina Bottom of the 7th

Corey Ray strikes out swinging, catcher Yermin Mercedes to first baseman Alex Murphy.

Trent Clark singles on a line drive to center fielder Austin Hays.

Isan Diaz singles on a ground ball to center fielder Austin Hays. Trent Clark to 3rd.

Jake Gatewood doubles (3) on a line drive to right fielder Steve Wilkerson. Trent Clark scores. Isan Diaz to 3rd.

Franderlin Romero intentionally walks Luis Aviles.

Troy Stokes Jr. pops out to shortstop Ricardo Andujar.

Max McDowell singles on a ground ball to center fielder Austin Hays. Isan Diaz scores. Jake Gatewood scores. Luis Aviles to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Mike Burke replaces Franderlin Romero.

Weston Wilson grounds into a force out, shortstop Ricardo Andujar to second baseman Drew Turbin. Max McDowell out at 2nd.

Lucas Erceg has been out the last two games. I haven't heard any reason for that. Sorry. Wendell Rijo played 3rd today and got hit in the hand by a pitch. When it looked like he might have to come out, they started warming up Ghelfi. Maybe they would have moved Gatewood to 3rd and put Ghelfi at first? Not sure. In any case, Rijo stayed in the game.

None of the Nashville Sounds could square up Hader today.

The one hit they had was a seeing eye single and not even one of their outs was solidly hit.

As the box score indicated Hader struggled with his command somewhat, testament to him and his stuff that he can be that un-hittable when not even bringing his A game.

Biloxi has a lineup of prospects who have lost some luster in the past year or two. They've already dropped down the prospect lists and if they don't show something this year, are going to get passed by that Carolina group with promotions.

It’s early, but Dubon without an extra base hit is incredibly disappointing. It seems like every hitter we acquire right now, they immediately regress. Outside of Arcia’s great 2015, hard to find a success story where a hitter broke out since Khris Davis in our development system (C’mon Gatewood!). I know that developing baseball players is volatile, but at some point doesn’t there need to some indications that we are doing this right?
