During Jake Gatewood's first at bat tonight the Carolina broadcaster discussed that in the off season Gatewood had a meeting with what I believe he said was his agent and a group of advisors (I wasn't listening all that close at this point) about things he could improve on. It was apparently recommended to Gatewood to get his vision checked which led to the discovery that while his vision was fine, it wasn't perfect and qualified him for corrective lenses. He elected to get contact lenses and said he now has more confidence at the plate due to the improved vision.

I may have misheard the part about who encouraged Gatewood to get his vision checked, but I reported above what I believe was said. I know this topic has come up before, but I would think major league teams would perform annual vision checks on all players within the organization? Seems like hitting professional pitching with anything less than perfect vision would leave a hitter at a significant disadvantage.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

That's potentially a big deal. Was reading a book over the winter about what makes an elite athlete elite. In regards to baseball, they said most hitters that get to the majors have ridiculous eyesight. Like so good you can't even measure it.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Sky Sox One-Hit Memphis, 3-1, To Secure Series Split

Woodruff, Archer, Blazek, Scahill combine for the feat.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Brewer pitchers allowed just one hit and one unearned run - while Ryan Cordell (2-5, HR, 2RBI) mashed his second home of the season - as the Sky Sox scored a 3-1 victory over the Memphis Redbirds.

The Sky Sox hitters kept the Memphis pitchers on the ropes all night, collection 10 hits, but they could only manage to plate three runs as they left 10 runners on base. In addition to Cordell’s heroics, Ivan De Jesus, Jr. (4-4, 3B) had four hits, and Eric Sogard (2-5, 2B) had two. Garrett Cooper (1-4) had a single to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

Cooper and Brett Phillips each struck out three times.

Despite only giving up only one hit all night, the Sky Sox pitchers gave the Redbirds their chances thanks to two hit batsmen, four walks, a wild pitch and an error.

Brandon Woodward overcame a some early wildness to get the win. Woodward lead off the game by hitting the first Redbird batter, then walked a pair. He almost escaped unharmed except for an error by Garrett Cooper allowed an unearned run to score. For the game, Woodward didn’t allow an earned run in five innings. He walked three and allowed only one hit, while striking out five.

Tristan Archer and Michael Blazek handled innings six, seven and eight to perfection - allowing no runs, hits or walks. Rob Scahill would make thing interesting in the 9th - picking a bad time to get wild. He would walk one, then hit a batter, and then add a wild pitch, before settling down and closing out the game for his second save of the season.

Colorado Springs Game Log

The Sky Sox started off the game with three consecutive hits, loading the bases. But strike outs by Garrett Cooper and Brett Phillips - followed by a fly out from Andrew Susac - ended the scoring threat.

Erceg and Ponce lead the way for the Mudcats

Lucas Erceg had two doubles and two RBIs in Carolina's first home win

By Carolina Mudcats | April 14, 2017 11:45 PM ET

Cody Ponce (7 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) started and got his second win for the Mudcats. The Keys had a strategy to swing early in the count rather than hit from behind as happened in their last game against Ponce. They had some success with that getting 4 hits in the second inning alone. Brad Kuntz and Jon Olczak finished out the game.

Lucas Erceg (3-4, 2 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI) led the offense. Trent Clark was 1-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Luis Aviles (2-3, W, 2 SB), and Troy Stokes (3B, outfield assist) also contributed. Mitch Ghelfi with another multi-hit night (2-4).

Wisconsin Box Score

Combined line for Thomas Jankins - Luke Barker: 9 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 9 K

Third baseman Jose Cuas, who was so awkwardly placed on that 2016 Manatee squad, was on base three times; otherwise, the offense still struggling -- although wet, it was 64 degrees for this one, so it hasn't been a typical miserably cold Midwest League start to the "spring"...

Woodward? I know that journalism doesn't pay much, but if you cover the team you should know the team and you should always - always - take the time to proofread what you wrote regardless of what spell-check on Word says. And turn auto-correct off.

More solid outings for Woodruff and Ponce. Williams was a little shaky, but despite three walks and a hit in two innings didn't give up a run. Perrin has been very good in the Williams-Perrin piggy-back, and I'm this close to hopping on the Thomas Jankins bandwagon.

The minor league pitching is looking up so far...
