Monte Harrison got hit in the helmet by an errant pitch in the 8th and had to be taken out of the game.

If he didn't have bad luck...

Do people - at all levels of baseball - seem to be getting hit more and more? More power pitchers. More wildness. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like more and more guys are getting hit by hard pitches (not talking about 81 mile curveballs).

Cooper, Espino Lead Sox To First Road Win, 8-2

Sox offense erupts as Cooper records four-hit, four-RBI night.

Garrett Cooper must be mad that BF.net readers have ignored him in the Top 25 prospect poll. But I promise, more days like this will get him noticed.

Cooper pounded out four of Colorado Springs 10 hits in an 8-2 victory over the Memphis Redbirds. Cooper (4-5) had a double and a home run while driving in four runs.

The other exciting news from Memphis was the return of Lewis Brinson (1-5, HR), who had missed five games with a dislocated finger. Brinson hit a home run to lead off the game.

On the mound, Paolo Espino threw six solid inning, surrounding two earned runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out six. Tyler Cravy and Wei-Chung Wang would work the final three innings without surrendering any hits, walks or runs. Nice job, gentlemen.

In other news, Andrew Susac (1-4) saw his first action of 2017. He had a single in four at bats - as well as an RBI - but he did strike out three times.

Colorado Springs Game Log

The Sky Sox just kept the pressure on the Redbirds all game, scoring in four different innings. They had 10 hits, a pair of walks, and capitalized on two Memphis errors.

Late Keys rally too much for Mudcats

The Mudcats lost 5-3 in front of an opening night crowd of 4,656

Eric Hanhold was the starter (5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K). He pitched into the 6th inning when he gave up 3 straight hits and 2 runs which tied the game. The Mudcats put up 3 runs on Cody Sedlock, who had held them scoreless in Frederick. Kodi Medeiros went 3 innings, giving up 2 runs and taking the loss. He walked none and struck out 2. Jake Gatewood misplayed two foul popups in the 9th which helped lead to the go ahead runs.

Mitch Ghelfi led the offense with 2 hits in 4 at bats. Jake Gatewood was 1-3 with a walk. Trent Clark had a double in 4 at bats.

The Khris Davis trade is diminished if RHP Bubba Derby is now a reliever - not quite the disappointment of not seeing LHP Wei-Chung Wang in the Sky Sox rotation, at least to start the season for both these guys, but still; this position player roster on paper looked like it might struggle, especially in the pitcher-friendly Southern League environment.

Cedar Rapids Edges Rattlers 2-1

Rattlers miss opportunities and drop second straight game

Wisconsin Boxscore

Another game of slim offensive output for the Rattlers. Their pitching did a great job, but as Mehring notes in his game story, the offense just could not quite come through. The team had another woeful night with runners in scoring position, this time going 1-9.

The offense was lead by Monte Harrison, Mario Feliciano, and Trever Morrison, each of whom had two hits. Feliciano had the lone extra base hit, his second double in as many nights and his third game in a row with an extra base hit. The 200th oldest (aka the youngest) player in the Midwest League on Opening Day has a smooth .994 OPS after 21 ABs, good for 11th in the league.

Harrison was hit in the face while batting in the top of the 8th. He left the game, but was reportedly not much the worse for wear after the game, with a puffy lip and not much else. It's great to hear Harrison is ok after a scary moment, and that he avoided serious injury.

Gilbert Lara, playing third base in the game, went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts and looked lost at the plate.

Jordan Desguin and Trey Supak tandemed 8 really good innings. Desguin just slipped a bit in the 5th, allowing the lone runs of the game for the Kernels. Supak allowed a single over his three innings, and that was it, paired with 4 punch outs. He's off to a really impressive start, and is in an 8-way tie for the lead in the Midwest League ERA crown, with an ERA of naught.

Wisconsin Log

This was all the Kernels, which I refuse to believe is a serious name for a baseball team, needed:

Cedar Rapids Bottom of the 5th

Caleb Hamilton homers (1) on a fly ball to left center field.

Aaron Whitefield grounds out, shortstop Trever Morrison to first baseman Ryan Aguilar.

Christian Cavaness singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Jordan Desguin.

With Jermaine Palacios batting, Jordan Desguin picks off Christian Cavaness at 1st on throw to Ryan Aguilar.

Jermaine Palacios walks.

Travis Blankenhorn triples (1) on a fly ball to right fielder Joantgel Segovia. Jermaine Palacios scores.

Mitchell Kranson grounds out, third baseman Gilbert Lara to first baseman Ryan Aguilar.
