Colorado Springs Box Score

The Sky Sox had a stinker of a game on Tuesday night in Memphis. The team managed only five hits and a single run.

Top prospect Josh Hader did himself no favors on the mound by surrendering five hits and a pair of walks in only three innings of work. He would give up three runs (each a solo home run) and didn’t strike out any hitters. Michael Blazek also struggled, giving up four hits and a pair of runs in just 1.1 innings of work.

Offensive highlights for the Sky Sox were handled by Nick Noonan, who hit a solo home run in the 6th. Garrett Cooper went 1-2 with a walk - and now has a five game hitting streak. As a team, the Sky Sox struck out 13 times.

Carson Kelly hit two of the Redbirds four home runs.

On the bright side, there were no errors! Yay! And Tim Dillard threw two innings of scoreless ball. Way to go Tim!

From the injury front, no word on the return of OF Lewis Brinson. He is listed as day-to-day with a dislocated finger.

The first inning of the Sky Sox pretty much shows off the club’s performance:

Kyle Wren called out on strikes.

Eric Sogard strikes out swinging.

Ryan Cordell strikes out swinging.

Jodan Yamamoto (5 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 K) was the starter followed by Conor Harber (1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K). Brad Kuntz appeared to get the Mudcats out of a bases loaded, 2 out jam when he induced a ground ball to short but it went off the chest of Luis Aviles and the throw to first was wild which allowed the tying and lead runs to score.

Luis Aviles had 2 walks and 2 stolen bases. Trent Clark with a double and Lucas Erceg (1-3, IBB, RBI) contributed on offense. Max McDowell also stole 2 bases.

Gideon’s walk-off double lifts Timber Rattlers

Tim Froberg, Appleton Post Crescent

GRAND CHUTE - It’s only six games into the Midwest League season and too early to know much about a club’s identity.

Matt Erickson, though, has to love the competitive spirit and late-inning grit he has seen from his 2017 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Two days after roaring back from an eight-run deficit against Quad Cities, the Timber Rattlers continued to show an impressive comeback capacity.

Cleanup hitter Ronnie Gideon drilled a three-run, bases-loaded walk-off double with two out in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Timber Rattlers to a 4-3 win over Burlington in the second game and give Wisconsin a split of a Tuesday doubleheader at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

“Let’s hope we continue this throughout the season,” said Erickson. “Today, it wasn’t easy. It was a chilly day and we had already lost the first game and then we give up two runs in the top of the seventh, but we found a way to put together some good at-bats and then Gideon had the big knock.

“That’s the nice thing about the game of baseball. There is no shot clock. You have to earn everything you get and you have to get the last out. Today, we didn’t let them get it.”

In Sunday’s home game against Quad Cities, the Timber Rattlers trailed the River Bandits 10-2 at one point before rallying back to tie the game. Wisconsin went on to drop an 18-11 decision in a wild slugfest, but it was the first sign that the Rattlers are fighters.

“This team has a fight like no other team I’ve been with,” said Gideon. “The game’s not over until the game’s over for this team. Everyone is going to play their heart out every inning. Everyone here hates losing. You’re going to get 100 percent from these guys every single day.”

The 22-year-old Gideon, a right-handed hitter and a 23rd-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2016 draft, delivered his game-winning hit down the third-base line, smoking a 1-1 changeup delivered by losing pitcher Greg Belton to score Trever Morrison, Ryan Aguilar and Monte Harrison.

“It’s a great feeling. I don’t think I’ve had a walk-off since college,” said Gideon. “My teammates put me into position to do this with some great at-bats in front of me. People took pitches and got on base. I just wanted to stay within myself at the plate, and not get too big and try and do too much. He hung a changeup and I was able to hit it on a line.”

Gideon, a first baseman and designated hitter, is off to a strong start at the plate. He went 3-for-4 in the second game and 4-for-6 on the day to raise his batting average to .364 with four RBI.

Gideon is known for his power after socking 17 home runs last season in rookie league ball at Helena in just 224 at-bats. He has yet to go yard this season, but had two doubles in the doubleheader and has collected three two-baggers in his first 22 at-bats. Erickson has been impressed with Gideon’s approach at the plate and his bat speed.

“I hope he continues to be this type of hitter — a hitter with some power instead of a power hitter,” Erickson said. “There’s definitely some power potential in that body and in that swing. To be honest, he gets in trouble when he tries to run into pitches and gets big with his swing. Today, he hit the ball on a line to different parts of the field. If you can do that and have his kind of bat speed, you’re going to run into a couple where you put the ball out of the ballpark.”

Gideon knocked in the Rattlers’ only run in a 4-1 opening-game loss with a sacrifice fly.

“You know what, I’ll take my hits any day, home runs are like icing on the cake,” said Gideon. “Home runs will eventually come. They’re not something you’re going to try and hit every day and it’s not something that’s going to happen every day.”

Catcher Mario Feliciano added two hits, including a triple, for the Ratters, who received solid pitching from starter Jake Drossner and reliever Miguel Sanchez.

The Rattlers (3-3) had a less festive opener, managing just three hits and stranding nine baserunners, while committing three errors.

Wisconsin got a solid start from losing pitcher Victor Diaz, who allowed one earned run (two overall) on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings.

Diaz threw three perfect innings before Jahmai Jones — the No. 1-rated prospect in the Los Angeles Angels organization — tied the game at 1-1 with a solo homer in the top of the fourth. A two-out fielding error later in the inning by third baseman Jose Cuas allowed Troy Montgomery to race home with the go-ahead run.

Diaz had ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, also known as Tommy John surgery, of his right elbow in 2015. He came back late last season and pitched in 10 games in the rookie league with the Arizona Brewers.

“It’s good to see Victor back on the mound healthy,” said Erickson. “I thought he was very good locating his fastball the first three innings. He really looked good.”
