Height / Weight Vitals (Media Guide updates)

Brewer Fanatic Staff

Always fun to review some of the height / weight differences on the prospects when the new media guide comes out, and comparing those vitals to either the 2016 media guide or the listings on the MiLB affiliate roster pages.

Keep in mind that for the 2016 draftees, the roster pages probably listed college and high school vitals, which explain big changes in 2017. Based on the timing of when the media guide comes out, the new media guide vitals could represent the end of last regular season, or instructional league, or even the very beginning of early spring camp.

We'll kick off with the 2016 Helena roster page:

RHP Colton Cross - 6'0", 200 to 6'1", 200

RHP Juan Diaz - 6'0", 185 to 6'0", 180

RHP Aaron Myers - 6'3", 225 to 6'3", 248

RHP Michael Petersen - 6'7", 195 to 6'7", 220

LHP Cameron Roegner - 6'6", 205 to 6'6", 210

RHP Scott Serigstad - 6'1", 190 to 6'1", 200

RHP Nash Walters - 6'5", 210 to 6'5", 230

C Cooper Hummel - 5'10", 185 to 5'10", 190

1B Ronnie Gideon - 6'2", 225 to 6'3", 250

SS Gilbert Lara - 6'2", 190 to 6'4", 198

2B Franly Mallen - 6'1", 160 to 6'1", 171

IF Trever Morrison - 6'0", 175 to 6'0", 190

IF Wes Wilson - 6'3", 195 to 6'3", 210

UT Ryan Aguilar - 6'2", 168 to 6'2", 170

OF Yerald Martinez - 6'2", 180 to 6'2", 194

OF Caleb Whalen - 6'2", 180 to 6'2", 195

Keep in mind if a player's vitals did not change, he's not listed in this thread (for instance, OF Demi Orimoloye is still 6'4", 225).

2016 Maryvale roster page - Remember that some players from higher levels technically finished 2016 on the Maryvale paper roster

RHP Corbin Burnes - 6'3", 205 to 6'3", 220

LHP Blake Lillis - 6'3", 180 to 6'3", 205

RHP Daniel Missaki - 6'0", 170 to 6'0", 160

RHP Luis Ortiz - 6'3", 230 to 6'2", 255 (yes, that's the AA prospect)

RHP Matt Smith - 6'3", 215 to 6'3", 225

RHP Andrew Vernon - 6'4", 232 to 6'4", 240

IF Julio Mendez - 5'10", 140 to 5'10", 171

SS Francisco Thomas - 6'2", 195 to 6'1", 204

OF Zach Clark - 6'2", 200 to 6'1", 200

OF Jay Feliciano - 6'2", 215 to 6'2", 225

I'll try and look at the DSL kids and even the upper levels in future posts...

Nash Walters continues to fill out well

Lara is still shooting up at 6'4 200 now

Ronnie Gideon..... all the complaints about his condition last season hope that is a good fit 250....

Burns, Drossner, Lillis, Jankins, and Aaron Meyer all filling out projections well.

Franley Mallen put on 11 pounds which is great for him

IF Gideon hits a homer every 13.176 ABs and deliver a .370 OBP, he can weigh 300 pounds for all I care.

He has enough height at 6'3 he can probably hold that weight well & still be agile enough for defense. His dad is a coach for the Rockies, he loves baseball, and can smoke a baseball. Just never good when multiple people in system mentioned him needing to improve his conditioning. Last thing we need is Tyrone Perry 2.0 to eat way out of baseball. Doubt it will be an issue with Ronnie

The dubious wisdom of cutting Perry so soon aside, I think that Perry's hamate injury had a bit to do with his departure as well. I don't think Brad Nelson ever really recovered from his.

That said, my benchmarks are a .370 OBP and a continued power rate. If Gideon keeps up his XBH and OBP performance, he will be the steal of the 2016 June draft even if he looks like Bear NT Eddie Goldman (who weighs in at 320 pounds).

Just curious, does anyone actually believe listed heights/weights?

Not really. I know when I submit our varsity rosters for football on wissports & maxpreps... I round up a good 5 pounds usually & and an inch or so.

Not really, except for the Cincinnati Reds who I believe actually do attempt to list accurate measurements (this was a topic on an Effectively Wild podcast).

The Baseball Reference listed heights and weights can be laughably inaccurate at times. Sometimes the international players who signed as teenagers go many years without their measurements being updated.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
