2017 Pre-Season BF.net Community Top 25 Prospect Poll - Voting is now closed

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

We would like to invite everyone to prepare for the 2017 Pre-Season BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects voting.

W would like to invite everyone to take time and submit on this thread your top 25 Brewer prospects. Feel free to list any resources or news that you feel might help people with their voting.

Voting will conclude on Tuesday, April 11, which will give everyone about a week to vote. You can change your votes at anytime through the 11th, so I recommend getting your picks in early. You can always go back and tweak your list.

RULES

1. Submit your Top 25 prospects, in order, by end of day on Tuesday, April 11. Put the player's full name to avoid any confusion (such as Devin Williams and Taylor Williams).

2. You MUST submit 25 prospects. If there are only 10 or 15 or whatever, your list will not be included.

3. You are encouraged to go beyond pick #25 - adding a few more is totally fine. That way if someone in your top 25 is traded or released, or if you mistakenly miss a number, or list a guy twice, or whatever, I can just bump up your next player(s) into the Top 25.

4. Rankings are determined by total points. The top prospect gets 25 points, second prospect gets 24 points, etc.

4. As noted above, if you submit your list and want to change something, just add the change to the thread. I'll accept changes up to the deadline.

5. Within a week after the deadline, we'll publish the new BF.net Community Top 25.

1. LHP Brent Suter - His floor is as a very solid late-inning reliever. Question is, what is the ceiling, closer, or somewhere in the rotation?

2. 3B Lucas Erceg - Just dominated and will climb fast.

3. 2B Isan Diaz - Will he be what Rickie Weeks could have been?

4. 1B Ronnie Gideon - Awesome power bat at first base.

5. LHP Josh Hader - Can he overcome Colorado Springs?

6. CF Lewis Brinson - Five tools, top talent

7. RHP Jon Perrin - Went from Wisconsin to Biloxi. Moving up fast.

8. RHP Luis Ortiz - Two plus pitches mean great promise.

9. LHP Wei-Chung Wang - Former Rule V pick could be a steal.

10. IF/OF Ryan Cordell - Can play all four IF positions and all three OF positions

11. 1B/OF Garrett Cooper - Shades of Lyle Overbay, but more versatility.

12. RHP Brandon Woodruff - Dominated at AA and A+

13. OF Michael Reed - Spring training showed a return of OBP skills, .951 OPS. Will get a LOT of ABs as AAA 4th OF due to Cordell's versatility and the DH rule in AL parks.

14. RHP Marcos Diplan – Have to love a 3.09 ERA, and almost 10.25 K per 9 innings.

15. RHP Freddy Peralta – 3.65 ERA, 10.65 K/9.

16. OF Troy Stokes - Quietly showing OBP skills, speed, and gap power.

17. OF Trent Clark - Awesome OBP skills, but can he boost his average?

18. OF Corey Ray - High pick, but starting at Brevard County was a mistake.

19. C Mitch Ghelfi - Switch hitter did solid in Wisconsin and Brevard County

20. C Jacob Nottingham - For a 21-year old at Biloxi, not bad.

21. OF/C Clint Coulter - Amazing what getting out of Brevard County does for a hitter.

22. OF Brett Phillips - Flashed power at Biloxi. Looks solid.

23. C Gabriel Garcia - Plays catcher and some IF positions, posted .893 OPS in Arizona.

24. UT Wes Wilson - Shows hitting and versatility (Spent time at seven positions). The new Hernan Perez?

25. SS Mauricio Dubron - AA shortstop, but there's a lot of depth at SS and as a result, 2B as well.

26. 3B/1B/SS Jacob Gatewood - Has power and versatility, but contact and OBP skills must improve

27. SS Gilbert Lara - Not seeing production

28. OF Demi Orimoloye – OBP skills improved, but other numbers are down.

29. RHP Cody Ponce – Peripherals look good, but only four innings a start is not good.

30. C Mario Feliciano – Hitting for average, but would like more OBP skills

31. OF Monte Harrison – He just looks overmatched, based on the stats.

32. OF Joantgel Santovia - High-average hitter, no pop

33. C Nathan Rodriguez - Worth a look

34. 1B Moises Perez - Flashing a 3TO bat in the DSL

35. CF Jesus Lujano - OBP skills, some speed. Intriguing DSL project.

Ortega and Devin Williams are off the ballot due to their TJ surgeries. Bickford's off for his 50-game suspension.

Michael Reed returns to my ballot with a very good spring training - and shouldn't be counted out. Every team needs a Brady Clark 4th OF.

1. Brinson- Hopefully tough decisions are required soon about how the Brewers outfield will look moving forward

2. Hader- Hoping for 17 MLB starts out of Josh this year.

3. Woodruff- I thought he'd get held back to Biloxi to start the year to gain some momentum and delay his ETA but sounds like he is going to be a level away from Milwaukee

4. I. Diaz- Like so many in the organization, cutting back on the Ks should be the highest development priority

5. L. Ortiz- Intently hoping his K rate climbs in return to Biloxi

6. Ray- Intangibles are there, now could use some production

7. Bickford- While I think his suspension shows poor judgement, the universal drop in prospect status seems excessive

8. Clark- Trent cannot be successful striking out in over a quarter of his Pas. That needs to change this year or he will drop like a rock

9. Erceg- Hard not to like the scouting reports

10. Diplan- Command still has a ways to go it seems

11. Dubon- A repeat of .199 ISO at AA and the Brewers future middle infield plans will need to change.

12. Phillips- Another bat that needs to dial ack the strikeouts.

13. Webb- Excited for the Brewers debut of the SEC strikeout king. I still contend that had scouts had a chance to watch him in summer leagues/more than one season at USC, he would have never still been on the board. My 2017 vote for biggest riser in the system.

14. Lopez- His last start in the WBC wasn't particularly encouraging

15. Ponce- Would love to hear reports of him hitting 97 again.

16. Harrison- Getting closer to now or never

17. Peralta- Promising results so far

18. Kirby- No setbacks, so far so good.

19. Burnes- Would like to see him miss more bats this year

20. Yamamoto- Challenge will be to keep overpowering more advanced hitters without overpowering stuff

21. Nottingham- His past offensive exploits are becoming more of a distant memory replaced with disappointing reports on his defense

22. Stokes- Often overlooked, but really had a nice second half last season

23. Wilkerson- Still deceiving hitters and dominating the strike zone. Looked good in the spring.

24. Barnes- An underappreciated big league debut and you could make a logical argument for the most likely to get 3 outs in the organization

25. T. Williams- No setbacks, so far so good.

26. Medeiros-The movement on his pitches in the spring training video, reminded me why I liked him so much, but yikes last season was bad

27. Lara- Im out until any kind of success at the plate or even a report showing he still has plus tools

28. Cordell- Looked good this spring, but still want to see him excel in meaningful at bats outside of High Desert

29. Perrin- Im still going to be a skeptic until he proves he can get advanced hitters out

30. Pennington- Trading Shaw, a former 26th rounder, and a 29th rounder for a reliever coming off the season that Thornburg had is quite the testament to the Red Sox scouting and development

This is getting tougher. When I started breaking things down I tossed names into lists of guys I thought definitely should be in the top 25 and those who I might put in there. I ended up with 28 definites and another 10-12 maybes. 15-28 are really close.

1. Lewis Brinson: 1 vs. 2 is a coin flip

2. Josh Hader: Possibly the Brewers' most important prospect

3. Corey Ray: Close between the next five. I'll trust the draft order for now.

4. Lucas Erceg: Wouldn't shock me if he is No. 1 by the start of next season.

5. Isan Diaz: Just keep hitting.

6. Brandon Woodruff: Spring reports have sounded pretty impressive after last season's breakout.

7. Luis Ortiz: Hoping the peripherals take a jump this year.

8. Trent Clark: Placement in Carolina a big vote of confidence.

9. Marcos Diplan: Probably the best of the next tier of pitching prospects.

10. Phil Bickford: Suspension costs him a couple of spots

11. Cody Ponce: I've got a feeling he bounces back.

12. Mauricio Dubon: Is the power for real?

13. Brett Phillips: More consistent contact would bounce him back into the top 10.

14. Ryan Cordell: Really nice spring.

15. Gilbert Lara: Hopefully proves Wisconsin placement isn't overaggressive.

16. Monte Harrison: Just stay healthy.

17. Jorge Lopez: Hopefully staying out of Colorado Springs helps.

18. Demi Orimoyole: See Lara, Gilbert.

19. Trey Supak: I know basing things off spring reports isn't always the best idea, but if he has started to put it all together the way the comments from camp indicate, this might be too low.

20. Kodi Medeiros: So much potential, but can he harness it?

21. Zack Brown: Woodruff's success might have me overconfident on the latest better stuff than results college pitcher to make a successful transition to pro ball. Outside of Perrin's ridiculous stat line, I think he led the Rattlers in K/BB rate last season.

22. Corbin Burnes: Here's hoping he continues his Wisconsin success at Carolina.

23. Taylor Williams: Interesting that it sounds like they are putting him into the rotation, even if it is as part of a tandem for innings consideration.

24. Freddy Peralta: Temporary spot that could change depending on how the A+ rotation shakes out.

25. Mario Feliciano: Has drawn some impressive notices this spring.

Just missed

26. Jacob Nottingham

27. Nathan Kirby

28. Jake Gatewood

29. Conor Harber

30. Jacob Barnes

Also, although given that I couldn't find room for Jacob Barnes I definitely couldn't squeeze him in, it wouldn't surprise me if Preston Gainey repeats Barnes' performance from a couple of years ago and forces his way onto the 40-man at year's end.

I left out the likes of Kirby, Coulter, Medeiros, Gatewood, Perrin, Stokes, Feliciano, Webb, McLanahan, etc.. Any one of those guys would have easily made the top 25 in years past.

Wouldn't surprise me if Roache leads the Southern League in HRs, yet he won't make our top 50.

I spent a good 45mins last night making a list. I was on player #24 and checking BRef on the stats for this guy and BRef which has been doing this to me frequently, crashed my browser. Fully Locked up, I couldn't Scroll through my list and copy it. So my list was lost rebooting my browser.

Sorry I'm not about to go back in to redoing it. #1 was Diaz 2 Hader 3 Ortiz something like that.

1. Isan Diaz - I think he will be a top 10 prospect in all of baseball by year end.

2. Lewis Brinson – Tough between Brinson and Diaz, but I think Diaz could truly be “special” where I see Brinson as just really good.

3. Lucas Erceg – Could be an all-star level 3B. Would have had him at #5 after ray until the spring training he had.

4. Josh Hader – I see him more a good #3 than truly a #1/#2 type unfortunately due to inconsistency. What’s good though is we have a lot of #3 starters IMO.

5. Corey Ray – Gonna be a solid regular.

6. Brandon Woodruff – Next three I think are a notch behind hader but still have #3 upside.

7. Luis Ortiz - Ditto

8. Marcos Diplan – Ditto, although if command comes together a bit more, he could be more than any of the guys ahead of him including Hader.

9. Mauricio Dubon – Last year was too much to deny.

10. Trent Clark – Was super high on “the neck” but last year was tough.

11. Ryan Cordell – Ultimately I see him as a great bench player for us.

12. Monte Harrison – I still believe.

13. Gilbert Lara – I don’t necessarily believe Lara is gonna make it, but his upside warrants this position.

14. Phil Bickford – closer long-term.

15. Braden Webb – Surprised he slipped as far in the draft as he did and I think he could impress this year.

16. Freddy Peralta – results were diplan-like last year, just a slight dip in stuff.

17. Trey Supak – Big breakout this year is coming.

18. Jacob Nottingham – Hope he can rebound but not sold. Only ahead of Mario due to level reached.

19. Kodi Medieros – Expect a bounce-back year because the stuff is still filthy.

20. Mario Feliciano – The guy I think is the catcher of the future.

21. Josh Pennington – Could be lethal if he can stay healthy much like the guys below him. Ultimately I see the next group as the beginning of a very good homegrown pen with Bickford as closer.

22. Taylor Williams – see pennington

23. Nathan Kirby – See Pennington

24. Cody Ponce – See Pennington

25. Thomas Jankins – Had to slide him into my cut off, I think he’ll shoot up lists this year in general.

Didn't really change much other than inserting some guys and putting Erceg higher. I was going to wait for more production to really bump him up, but I love his profile and have a lot of confidence in him. There was some potential shuffling in the 20 range I was going to do, but figure it is going to need a big overhaul mid-season and will just wait for then. Also want to expand my personal list to 50 mid-season as the depth is so strong.

1. Lewis Brinson-

Brinson is the complete package. Something no other player among our top prospects can really say. He has a lot of potential and has shown it in the high minors. +0

2. Josh Hader-

I don't think he will be the TOR guy some are dreaming of, but he could be a flashy mid-rotation guy or at worst an electric reliever. +0

3. Isan Diaz-

This kid is legit and putting up great stats at Single-A. The power is there and the OBP skills are there too. Can't wait to watch him climb the ladder and the rankings. He may have to move to 2B, but his bat will play there just fine.+1

4. Luis Ortiz-

I think he has a higher ceiling than Hader, but there are health concerns and he is farther off. -1

5. Lucas Erceg-

Lucas Erceg looked pretty comfortable and showed a lot more power than one would think. He has room to build onto his frame and have legit power. That being said he was a college bat doing well at A-ball. Wont put him higher till he continues at A+ and AA. +5

6. Corey Ray-

I know a lot of people weren't happy with drafting him, but he has all the tools to be a great above average OFer. He has started out slow, but I am not concerned yet. -1

7. Phil Bickford-

What a player to get for Will Smith. Bickford could end up as mid-rotation starter or at worst a top of the line reliever. He is going to be a force one way or the other. I don't really mind the suspension at this point. -1

8. Brandon Woodruff-

Woodruff has a solid arsenal with three above average offerings. He seems like a safe bet to be a #3 starter and for that reason he will be in the Top 10 prospects. He lacks the ceiling I would prefer in a Top 5 organizational prospect though. -1

9. Mauricio Dubon-

What is not to love about this kid. High floor and a pretty darn high ceiling to go with it. He should be in my Top 5 mid-season if he hits again at AA. Heck he could find himself #1. NEW!

10. Trent Clark-

I love the hit tool and even more so with his great OBP skills he has shown. He is going to figure it out and break out soon enough. -2
